INTRODUCTION - The Portray of Laura, Kelly and Linda
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The management is very important for the company because it’s kind of a motor for the
company to help them reach their goals and be at the top.
In front of us we have a text related to a company and more precisely an agency, a non profit
one, inside the text we have two managers and their boss.
Let’s do their portray
The first one is Laura ! Who is laura? She is described as the associate director of a non -
profit agency that provides assistance to children and families. Laura is a very busy person
and her lack of time impacts the company. Laura is not a good manager because of her type
of communication which discouraged her team and she didn’t share the budget with her two
managers who are Kelly and Linda.Let’s discover linda in that second paragraph
Linda is introduced as a person who has extensive experience in social science research
and evaluation. She is managing a team and looks like a very competent person; she is
known as a problem solver, she is extremely supportive of her staff and She is an organized
person. All those descriptions on Linda permit us to say that she has manager's DNA in her
because of her aptitude and the way she manages her team. She is also a very important
piece of her company.
Kelly, despite her ambiguous view of the issues which is clearly a very bad habit for a
manager, is nevertheless filled with many good qualities such as a very impressive
organisation skill which helps her to manage a staff that accomplishes an important work
that is to provide research support to another department that supply behavioural health
services to youth.
She is also well appreciated by her superiors (high-level leadership) thanks to her latest
research that talks about therapeutic services. Therefore she is expecting the same values
she earned from her staff and has the motivation it requires to help everybody she’s working
with reach that goal.
1.How can Laura most effectively use management and leadership skills
in her role as Associate Director? What combination of the two do you
think would work best in this context?
‘’Laura has not shared the budgets with her managers’’ that sentence is suspicious and hard
to explain because a manager should share information. She also didn’t encourage her
team. When you are a manager you must find a way to build good relationships with your
peers and also a source of motivation for her team.
The style management that Laura uses seems like a mess. There is no coordination
between her two managers. It would have been suitable if they worked in symbiosis.
Even if Laura looks busy she is not a simple employee, she must find a way to manage her
time and let her team help her.
A good manager must really know how to handle the time with a good organisation….
It's hard to trust complete strangers. Confidence develops more easily when you know each
other. As a project manager, you must create cohesion within your team by encouraging
your collaborators to know each other better and to know you better. Do this by creating
opportunities to bring your team together in a friendly and informal way, outside of the
workplace and hierarchical barriers.
Without your team, it will be difficult for you to succeed in your project. It is important to
devote time to your employees every day. Show them that you are available and that they
can come to you at any time if they have any doubts, problems or difficulties. Also take the
time to drop by to make sure everything is going well. So your team knows they can count
on you and trust you if anything goes wrong.
❖ Be transparent
Don't hide anything from your team or lie to them. Avoid withholding information and
communicate constantly with your team members. Communication and information sharing
are essential elements in gaining the trust of your team. Even if the news is bad, your people
have a right to know. It is better that they are informed of the situation by you rather than by
noise from the hallway.
To build trust, it's important to keep your promises and commitments. If you tell your team
that you are going to give them a bonus or that you are going to accomplish such a task, do
it. Your employees will see for themselves that you are a person of your word, worthy of
confidence.
3. What advice would you give Laura on improving her leadership skills
and how to improve their management skills?
We advise Laura to be honest, responsible and a creative person. She must build a work
environment open to all, Encourages its employees and try to improve her communication
skills, to Be trustworthy , perseverant , reliable and make an effort to build relationships
because she is a leader. She also works in symbiosis with her two excellent managers
because they are full of qualities and they are an added value for the company.
In this style, managers use their persuasive skills to convince employees that the unilateral
decisions that the manager implements are for the good of the team, department, or
organization.
Rather than simply ordering employees to perform tasks, managers employing this style
would invite questions and would explain the decision-making process and rationale behind
policies. This can help employees feel as though they are a more trusted and valued part of
the staff and are involved in key business decisions, leading to lower levels of resentment or
tension between management and staff.
Laura must change her behavior towards her collaborators. Because with her managerial
role, she must build a healthy relationship and share all information about their work.
We are going to start with the weaknesses Laura has good teammates but they didn’t work
together. They must improve their communications and find solutions for problems that are
facing their company. There is also a lot of work to do for the staff due to high turnover which
is bad for the company . The communication that Laura uses is also a weakness for her
team because that is not encouraging people at all and this can be the reason for a bad
result of work. In addition, the misinformations between Laura and managers is not good
because when you are a leader you must give all the information that your employees need
for doing their job well.
About their strengths, both managers are very brilliant. Reported by their description only
that fact is a very powerful strength for that company. They also have a large number of
employees to handle five teams; each other this isn’t a small number.
