Introduction: What is Data
• What is Data? it is any information or instructions that are input, processed, stored,
and output by a computer system.
• This information can take many forms, including text, numbers, images, audio, video,
and program code.
Types of Data

1) Qualitative Data - refers to numerical or measurable data that can be analyzed

statistically. It includes data such as counts, percentages, measurements, ratings, and
scores
2) Quantitative Data - refers to non-numerical data that is descriptive in nature. It
includes data such as opinions, attitudes, beliefs, experiences, and behaviors. Qualitative
data can be collected through methods such as interviews, observations, focus groups,
and open-ended surveys
Ways of Collecting Data
• There are several ways of collecting data, which vary depending on the type of data and the research
question being addressed.

• The choice of method depends on the: Research question, Type of data being collected, and the
Resources available to the researcher.
Data collection Methods
1 Surveys • Surveys involve collecting data from a group of people by asking them questions, either
in person, by phone, or online.
• Surveys can be designed to collect both quantitative (numeric) and qualitative (non-
numeric) data
2 Interviews • Interviews involve asking questions of individuals or groups in person, by phone, or through
video conferencing.
• Interviews can be structured (with a set list of questions) or unstructured (allowing for open-
ended responses)
3 Observations • Observations involve watching people, animals, or events to gather information about their
behavior, interactions, and patterns.
• Observations can be done in person or remotely through video recordings.
4 Experiments • Experiments involve manipulating one or more variables to observe the effect on a dependent
variable.
• Experiments are often conducted in a controlled environment to minimize outside influences
on the results. Mostly used by scientist in the Labolatory
5 Case Studies • Case studies involve in-depth investigation of a particular individual, group, or event to gather
detailed information about their experiences and behaviors.
• Case studies can be used to provide insight into complex situation.
6 Secondary • Secondary data involves using existing data that has already been collected by other
Data researchers or organizations.
• Examples of secondary data sources include government reports, academic literature, and
magzines,newspapers
Planning a survey
Before you do a survey, they are several things you need to consider. This is called
planning i.e. putting things in order.

Steps
1. Identify your survey goal. What do you want to find out?
2. Choose the type of data you want to collect. Qualitative or Quantitative
3. Choose the Survey Method
4. Choose the technology for survey
Digital devices and applications to collect data

• These includes:-
• Smart Phones, Digital Cameras,
Drones,Sensors,Tablets,Smart watches
• These digital devices contain sensors, cameras and
storage devices that can capture and store information.
• For example a smart phones or a smart watch contains
camera and stop watch timer
Software applications to collect data

• Examples include:- Google Forms, Microsoft Excel,Type

form,Open DataKit:

• Assignment: Survey goal: Collect a student details

• Please create a google document such as this

What we have learnt so far!

• What is a survey
• Different ways of collecting information
• Creating a survey (Google forms)

Next:
• Data analysis- Ms Excel ( Bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs)
• Data presentation
Data Analysis

• After data collection from a survey, we need to analyse the data.

• We will transfer the data into a spreadsheet then make charts.
How to insert charts (Bar,line,Pie)

• Open Excel workbook and select your data.

• You can do this manually using your mouse, or you can select a
cell in your range and press Ctrl+A to select the data
automatically.
• Once your data is selected, click Insert > Insert Column or Bar
Chart
Inserting bar charts
Presenting data

• Take a screenshot or save as an image.

• Open PowerPoint presentation document
• Copy the analysed data on the powerpoint document
Sample Survey: Favourite Things
Data Presentation: Bar Graph
• Chart that shows the
most popular food
Favourite Sport: Pie chart
Favourite Subject

• Favourite Subject
