Layers of Earth

Watch the video “Layers of Earth” and then answer the following questions.

1. What did the video use to show the different layers of Earth?
Scientists use waves to study the different layers of the
earth. Usually, they use seismic waves, which are waves
generated by earthquakes or nuclear-test explosions. The
seismic waves are bent, sped up, or slowed down, or even
reflected when they pass through the earth's layers.

2. Which layer is the thinnest? Inner core it is a very thin layer

of solid rock. It is the thinnest layer of the Earth.
3. The crust is _____ miles thick below the oceans. 4 miles
oceanic crust, the outermost layer of Earth's lithosphere that
is found under the oceans and formed at spreading centres
on oceanic ridges, which occur at divergent plate
boundaries. Oceanic crust is about 6 km (4 miles) thick.

4. The crust is _____ miles thick below the continents.

Continental crust is typically 40 km (25 miles) thick,
while oceanic crust is much thinner, averaging about 6 km (4
miles) in thickness. The effect of the different densities of
lithospheric rock can be seen in the different average
elevations of continental and oceanic crust.

5. The temperature of the crust is _________. Just as the depth

of the crust varies, so does its temperature. The upper crust
withstands the ambient temperature of the atmosphere or
ocean—hot in arid deserts and freezing in ocean trenches.
Near the Moho, the temperature of the crust ranges
from 200° Celsius (392° Fahrenheit) to 400° Celsius (752°
Fahrenheit).

6. Which is the largest layer? The mantle The mantle is the

largest layer of the Earth.

7. How many miles thick is the mantle? 1,802 miles

The mantle is about 2,900 kilometers (1,802 miles) thick, and
makes up a whopping 84% of Earth's total volume.

8. What two parts make up the lithosphere? Cutaway Earth

The lithosphere is the rocky outer part of Earth. It is made up
of the brittle crust and the top part of the upper mantle. The
lithosphere is the coolest and most rigid part of Earth.

9. What is the lithosphere compared to? Comparison of the

Lithosphere and Asthenosphere

10. What is the asthenosphere described as? The asthenosphere

(from Ancient Greek ἀσθενό ς (asthenós) 'without strength')
is the mechanically weak and ductile region of the upper
mantle of Earth.

11. What is the outer core made of? liquid iron and nickel
Outer Core The outer core, about 2,200 kilometers (1,367
miles) thick, is mostly composed of liquid iron and nickel.
12. What is the hottest layer? Scientists believe that the inner
core is the hottest layer of the Earth, that it is composed
mostly of iron and nickel, and that although it is hot enough
to be a liquid, it acts as a solid because of the immense
amount of pressure on it.

13. Name the two ways scientists study Earth’s layers. Scientists
can tell by observing the seismic waves that are recorded all
over the surface of the earth from distant earthquakes. The
seismic waves are reflected (bounced off) layers of different
density, and they are refracted (bent) when they enter layers
of different density.
