LESSON 1
Compound Microscope
What’s In
The microscope is a tool which can help you see tiny objects and small living
organisms that cannot be seen by the naked eye. It makes them look bigger. The study
of the diversity of life begins with microscopic organisms.
It comprises of three major parts based on their functions: magnifying,
illuminating and mechanical parts.
What’s New
1
What Is It
The word microscope comes from the words micro meaning “small” and scope
meaning “to see or view.” The purpose of a microscope is to magnify small objects so
that they can be seen clearly. To magnify means to increase in size of something to
look bigger. Organisms that cannot be seen by our naked eye can be seen and
observed under a microscope.
Below are the parts and functions of a compound microscope.
2
• Fine Adjustment Knob – this part moves the body tube slightly to help
sharpen or “fine” tune the view of the specimen.
• Stage clips - hold the specimen in place
B. Illuminating Parts – part of the microscope which supplies light and regulate
light towards the focus specimen.
• Diaphragm – this part helps adjust the amount of light that reaches
the specimen.
• Mirror - reflects or shines light up through the diaphragm
