What This Module is About

Introductory Message
Welcome to the Science 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Parts and
Function of a Compound Microscope

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

from public schools to assist you, the teacher or facilitator, in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.

To the facilitators:

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You
also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their
own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

To the parents:
As a vital partners in education, your support to your children’s learning at home, is
a great factor to ensure that they will become succesful in what they do. As a parents,
you are expected to monitor your children’s progress while they are accomplishing the
tasks in this module while at the same time, ensuring that they learn independently.

The objectives set for this learning material will be certainly accomplished with your
steadfast guidance and support.

To the learners:

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

Furthermore, it is our objective that you will have fun while going through this material.
Take charge of your learning pace and in no time, you will successfully meet the
targets and objectives set in this module which are intended for your ultimate
development as a learner and as a person.
How to Learn from this Module
To achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the following:
• Take your time reading the lessons carefully.

Compound Microscope

What I Need To Know

Learning Competency: Identify parts of the microscope and their functions.

Code: S7LT-lla-1

Objectives: At the end of this module, you will be able to:

1. identify the parts of a compound microscope and their functions.

What’s In

The microscope is a tool which can help you see tiny objects and small living
organisms that cannot be seen by the naked eye. It makes them look bigger. The study
of the diversity of life begins with microscopic organisms.
It comprises of three major parts based on their functions: magnifying,
illuminating and mechanical parts.

What’s New

Arrange the following jumbled letters into word/s referring to parts of a

microscope:
1. p e i c e e y e = __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
2. t n i o j n a t i o n i n c l i = __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
__ __ __ __ __
3. b u t e y d o b = __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
4. m a r = __ __ __
5. t i v e s o b j e c = __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __

What Is It

The word microscope comes from the words micro meaning “small” and scope
meaning “to see or view.” The purpose of a microscope is to magnify small objects so
that they can be seen clearly. To magnify means to increase in size of something to
look bigger. Organisms that cannot be seen by our naked eye can be seen and
observed under a microscope.
Below are the parts and functions of a compound microscope.

A. Mechanical Parts - used to support and adjust the parts of the

microscope
• Base – the bottom part that supports the whole weight of the microscope.
• Arm – the part on the side that is being held when carrying the
microscope.
• Inclination Joint – part of the microscope that is tilted to have the
desired angle for viewing.
• Body Tube – a tube part of the microscope that supports the eyepiece.
• Revolving nosepiece – this holds the objective lenses and is able to
rotate to change magnification.
• Stage – part of the microscope where the slide containing the
specimen to be viewed is placed.
• Coarse Adjustment Knob – this part moves the body tube up and
down to help get the specimen into view.

2
• Fine Adjustment Knob – this part moves the body tube slightly to help
sharpen or “fine” tune the view of the specimen.
• Stage clips - hold the specimen in place
B. Illuminating Parts – part of the microscope which supplies light and regulate
light towards the focus specimen.
• Diaphragm – this part helps adjust the amount of light that reaches
the specimen.
• Mirror - reflects or shines light up through the diaphragm

C. Magnifying Parts - used to enlarge the specimen

• Eyepiece – this part is also called ocular, where you look through to
see the image of the specimen.
• Objective lenses - gather light from the specimen, magnifies the image of
the specimen, and projects the magnified image into the body tube.
The following are the types of objective lenses:
• High Power Objective Lens – it usually has 40x magnification
and is used to locate those areas which need closer study.
• Low Power Objective Lens - it has a magnification of 10x and
allows you to quickly scan a large area of the specimen
• Scanner – it has a 4x magnification, the lowest magnification
of all the objective lenses.
• Oil Immersion Objective - a microscope objective of high resolving
power in which the space between the front lens and the cover glass
is filled with an oil
