Injector Head Traction
TRACTION SYSTEM
From inside the traction cylinders, the hydraulic power is converted into
mechanical force via a traction cylinder piston, this force then acts on the
gripper blocks of the injector head drive chains.
Finally, the force generated helps to hold or grip coiled tubing pipe during CT
operations.
Coiled tubing operator controls and monitors traction system from inside a
control cabin via traction control devices and traction hydraulic pressure gauges
respectively.
OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES OF TRACTION SYSTEM
Generally, standard coiled tubing
control cabin is equipped with at
least five different control devices
for an effective and proper operation
of traction system. These devices are
explained as follows,
1. TRACTION PRESSURE
ADJUST:
CT operator is able to increase or
decrease hydraulic pressure to the
traction cylinders with the aid of this
traction pressure adjust. Turning this
pressure adjust clockwise increases
the traction hydraulic pressure while
turning it anticlockwise decreases
the pressure.

2. INJECTOR TRACTION
PRESSURE DRAIN: PRESSURE DRAIN
CT operator is able to bleed off the
pressure in the traction cylinders with
the aid of this valve. During operation
this valve must be switched to a
pressure position (completely close).
OFF
2. Select top, middle & bottom
ON
traction on/off valves to an MIDDLE TRACTION
‘ON’ position respectively.
