OPTIWHI TE

OPTIWHITE represents the most versatile pigment of the

thermo-optic series. OPTIWHITE is not only capable of sub-
stantial Ti02 reduction, but acts as a flatting agent as well.
Properly formulated OPTIWHITE approaches have resulted in sig-
nificant properly improvements while saving substantially.
Typical approaches result in equal or better hiding, 25% better
scrub resistance with RMC savings.

OPTIWHITE P
OPTIWHITE P exhibits more opacity than OPTIWHITE. Film
property advantages associated with OPTIWHITE are not as good
but can still be demonstrated in many formulation approaches.
OPTIWHITE P does contribute a buff-tone to coatings due to
the 84 brightness. Angular sheen, depending on the formulation
approach, may be equal to or slightly higher than OPTIWHITE.
Overall, OPTIWHITE P offers more hiding and greater savings than
OPTIWHITE without the exceptional advantages in film properties
associated with optiwhite.

TISYN
TISYN exhibits the greatest degrees of opacity in this
pignent series. Film properties and sheen properties more
approach what is expected of conventional calcined clay.
Again, coatings containing TISYN may exhibit a buff-tone,
depending on the level of TISYN and other pigments in the
.

GENSTAR STONE PRODUCTS CO.: CAMEL-CALICAMEL-CAL STICAMEL-CAL

Slurry:
CAMEL-CAL is a fine-ground calcium carbonate available as
a dry powder, a stearate-coated powder (CAMEL-CAL ST), and a
stable, high solids (75%) water dispersion. In both the dry
and slurry forms, the average particle size of 0.7 microns,
promotes high scattering to develop dry hide, tinting strength,
and Ti02 replacement values in coating formulations. In plast-
ics compounding (both thermoset and thermoplastic), improved
impact resistance, easier and lower energy cost compounding,
and less barrel and die wear are promoted by the fine particle
size of both regular CAMEL-CAL and CAMEL-CAL ST. Formulation
and processing characteristics, formerly only obtained by use
of precipitated carbonates, are now available at lower cost

GENSTAR STONE PRODUCTS CO.: CAMEL-FIL:

CAMEL-FIL is a low cost, fine-ground calcite (calcium
carbonate) specifically designed for high filler loading in
glass-reinforced polyester (SMC, TMC, and BMC). The unique
particle size distribution optimizes particle packing, leaving
less void space to be filled by expensive resin. The result is
lower viscosity and/or higher filler loading capability--levels
of over 2 0 0 parts filler/100 parts resin are easily attainable
in most formulations. Improved processing characteristics are
also important--rapid dispersion and wet-out, excellent flow
in the mold, and good surface smoothness of the molded parts
are obtained. Low moisture content, product uniformity.

GREFCO, INC.: DICAPERL Hollow Glass Microspheres:

DICAPERL is a family of lightweight, hollow glass bubble
fillers. Available in a variety of particle size ranges, with
or without surface modifications, DICAPERL is a very cost
effective density reducing filler for any resinibinder system.
Silane-modified DICAPERL functional fillers substantially
reduce weight, reduce shrinkage, improve impact, nailing,
stapling, and sanding properties of molded parts. The finest
grades are used in RPjComposites including glass fiber rein-
forced products formed by both spray-up and hand lay-up prod-
uction processes, where surface detail is critical. The coarser
grades are used in cast or molded parts not requiring ultra-
fine surface appearance.
Fine particle size, unmodified grades of DICAPERL are quite
effective as thickening, and anti-sag additives in specialty
coatings. The coarser grades are used to produce texturing and
stipple effects in texture and acoustical coating mixes, block
filler paints, etc.

All DICAPERL "Series 10" products are white, surface-modified
materials with a softening point of approximately 1 8 0 0 F and a
surface pH of 7. The surface modification is comparable to that
obtained with conventional silanes containing organic functions
such as amino, vinyl, cyclic epoxy, aliphatic epoxy, methacryl-
oxy and rnercapto groups.
Unmodified grades designated HP-100, HP-200 and HP-500 are
also available. A "Series 12" product, HP-112, HP-212, HP-512,
or H P - 7 1 2 is recommended when superior stability is critical.

GREFCO, INC.: PERLITE Functional Fillers:

DICALITE Perlite functional fillers are a versatile family
of mineral-based silicate products available throughout the
world. These fillers are processed from an amorphous, naturally
occurring glass found where there has been volcanic activity.
When processed under the proper conditions the solid glass
particles expand like popcorn up to 20 times their original
volume. A specialized GREFCO process incorporating expansion,
selective milling, and sizing determines the particle shape of
each filler product.
A variety of flake or di-, tri- and tetrahedral particle
shapes are obtained by this exclusive process. These unique
shapes provide numerous functions including high surface area,
permeability and reinforcement and have densities among the
lowest of any of the mineral fillers. In addition to superior
spatial loading this property affords the added bonus of density
control in finished products. DICALITE Perlite fillers
are off-white and do not interfere with the coloring of the
products into which they are formulated.
DICALITE Perlite fillers are inert to all but strong acids
or alkalis and have no residual surface reactivity. After
processing they are free of any organic contamination.

GREFCO, INC.: SOLKA-FLOC Functional Fillers:

SOLKA-FLOC is powdered cellulose obtained from mechanically
disintegrated cellulose prepared by processing bleached or
unbleached cellulose obtained as a pulp from such fibrous
materials as wood or cotton. It occurs as a white or brown,
odorless substance and consists of fibrous particles that may
be compressed into self-binding tablets that disintegrate
rapidly in water. It exists in various grades, exhibiting
degrees of fineness ranging from a dense, free-flowing powder
to a coarse, fluffy, nonflowing material. It is insoluble in
water, in dilute acids, and in nearly all organic solvents.
It is slightly soluble in sodium hydroxide TS. When bone dry,
the white or bleached grades are at least 99.5% pure cellulose.
SOLKA-FLOC is an excellent filler for a wide variety of
rubber and plastic products. SOLKA-FLOC improves dimensional
stability, reduces green shrinkage, improves impact strength
and improves drying rate of stable foams.
Applications include a wide variety of thermoset resins for
injection molding and rubber compounds ranging from floor tiles
to shoe soles.
SOLKA-FLOC is ashless and is used in the manufacturing of
ceramic products as a burn out agent and to provide controlled
porosity.
It is used as a plasticizer, bulking agent, arc intensifier,
absorbent and lubricant.
SOLKA-FLOC can be used as a binder, texturizer and thickening
agent in products such as latex paints, texture and adhesive
compounds.

MANVILLE: CELITE Funct onal Fillers for the Coatings Industry:

CELITE Diatomite:
Diatomite is a soft powdery mineral with a unique particle
stucture.

CELITE Grade Selection for Optimum Performance

Since CELITE extenders are essentially pure silica, they are
inert and non-reactive in all commonly used solvent- and water-
thinned organic coating vehicles. For the same reason, they do
not interfere with the performance of other pigments.

MANVILLE: MICRO-CEL:

MICRO-CEL is the Manville trademark for synthetic calcium

silicates made through the reaction of diatomite with calcium
hydroxide. These unique pigments are processed in two grades
for use in water emulsion paints: MICRO-CEL T-38 and MICRO-CEL
T-70.
Because of their contribution to hiding, both are extensively
used in latex flat wall paints to reduce the amount of titanium
dioxide required, resulting in savings in raw material costs.
In addition to excellent dry hiding, MICRO-CEL provides built-
in g l o s s and sheen control, improvement in touch-up and uni-
formity of appearance.
MICRO-CEL also has good suspension properties which accounts
for its use in traffic paints and other applications where non-
settling is important.
Hiding Contribution:
MICRO-CEL T-38 and T-70 are classified as medium particle
size extenders consisting of clusters of sub-micron particles.
Gloss and Sheen Control:
As a flatting agent, additions of 30 lbs of MICRO-CEL T-38
or 40 lbs. of MICRO-CEL T-70 per 100 gal. will result in very
low 60 gloss and 8 5 sheen values.
Dispersion Techniques:
As with CELITE, MICRO-CEL should be the first pigment
addition.

I.T. Industrial Talc

.T. industrial talc is produced in several grades to prov-

ide a wide range of fineness and binder demand. The chemical
inertness, easy "stir-in'' dispersion, and excellent suspension
qualities of I.T. talc combine to give the paint chemist a
versatile extender pigment with which to formulate solvent-
thinned and water-thinned coatings.
Types :
I.T. X has low binder demand with 1 to 2% retained on a
No. 325 mesh sieve. As a relatively coarse type of inert, it
is a useful extender in coatings where paint fineness and
film smoothness are not of prime importance, but where some
degree of film roughness or "tooth" is beneficial, such as
primers.
I.T. 3X has medium binder demand with fineness similar to
the I.T. X grade. I.T. 3X with higher binder demand increases
paint consistency and improves pigment suspension where settling
is likely to be a problem.
I.T. FT has binder demand similar to I.T. 3X but is a fine
textured type of inert that readily stirs into paint to a 2
Hegman fineness when used at a level of three pounds per gallon.
I.T. 5X is similar in fineness to I.T. FT although slightly
higher in binder demand to impart increased paint consistency.
I.T. 325 has medium binder demand and serves as a general
purpose extender for all paints where fineness and film smooth-
ness are of primary importance. This grade readily stirs into
paint to a 4 Hegman fineness at the three-pound per gallon
level.
Uses: Suggested uses for I.T. industrial talc include interior
wall paints, exterior house paints, primers, maintenance
paints and traffic paints.
Typical chemical analysis for all grades(calcu1ated as
oxides) :
Silicon dioxide (Si02) 56.0%
Magnesium oxide (MgO) 30.7
Calcium oxide (CaO) 7.0
Iron Oxide (Fe203) 0.1

NYTAL Industrial Talc
NYTAL industrial talc is produced in three grades to provide
a wide range of fineness and binder demand. The chemical inert-
ness, easy "stir-in" dispersion, and excellent suspension qual-
ities of NYTAL combine to give the paint chemist a versatile
extender pigment with which to formulate solvent-thinned as
well as water-thinned coatings.
Types :
NYTAL 200 has low binder demand with 1 to 2% retained on a
No. 325 sieve. As a relatively coarse type of inert, it is a
useful extender in coatings where paint and film smoothness
are not of prime importance, but where some degree of film
roughness or "tooth" is beneficial, such as primers.
NYTAL 300 has medium binder demand and serves as a general
purpose extender for all paints where fineness and film
smoothness are of primary importance. This grade readily stirs
into paint to a 4 Hegman fineness when used at a level of three
pounds per gallon. NYTAL 300, with its ease of dispersion, good
dry brightness, and compatibility with other ingredients of the
formulation, contributes to the working and suspension proper-
ties of the paint.
NYTAL 400 is a superfine talc pigment. It stirs in easily to
a 5 Hegrnan fineness at the three-pound per gallon level and
finds application in formulations where high paint fineness and
film smoothness are required, such as semi-gloss enamels. The
great ease of incorporation enables last minute batch adjust-
ments by the formulator for desired consistency, sheen, or other
special properties prior to the filling operation.
Uses: Suggested uses for NYTAL industrial talc include interior
wall paints, exterior house paints, primers, maintenance
paints and traffic paints.
Typical chemical analysis for all grades (calculated as oxides) :
Silicon dioxide (Si02) 56.0%
Magnesium oxide (MgO) 30.7
Calcium Oxide (CaO) 7.0
Iron Oxide (Fe203) 0.1
Aluminum Oxide (A1203) 0.3
Moisture (H20) 0.6
Ignition loss 5.6
NYTAL 300H industrial talc is an addition to the NYTAL line.
It exhibits the same desirable chemical inertness, easy "stir-
in" dispersion and excellent suspension properties of other
NYTAL grades. NYTAL 300H has a 4 Heqman fineness at a use level
of three pounds per gallon and relatively high binder demand.
These combined properties provide a coating with improved
pigment suspension.
Suggested uses for NYTAL 3 0 0 H in both solvent-thinned and
water-thinned coatings include interior wall paints, exterior
house paints, primers, maintenance paints and traffic paints.

PYRAX B and PYRAX WA
PYRAX is a hydrated aluminum silicate produced from North
Carolina deposits of the mineral pyrophyllite. PYRAX B and PYRAX
WA are relatively coarse grades and are useful in coatings
wherein pigment fineness is not a prerequisite. The platy
particle shape of PYRAX imparts “mud-cracking‘’resistance to
high build coatings such as texture paints and block fillers.
For the same reason, it is useful also in crack fillers and
joint cements.

VANS IL W
Calcium Silicate-Wollastonite
VANSIL W is an acicular calcium silicate product available in
three grades of fineness to meet paint industry requirements.
Each grade exhibits lower consistency effect in paint than
indicated by its oil absorption value. The low oil absorption
characteristic of VANSIL W enables the formulator to reduce raw
material cost by replacement of vehicle. The relatively high pH
( 9 . 8 ) of VANSIL W is particularly useful in maintaining the
desired alkaline pH level of latex paints and for the prevention
of early rusting in latex maintenance coatings.
VANSIL W is an excellent extender pigment for both solvent-
thinned and latex paints.
Types :
VANSIL W-10 is a coarse grade with 2% retained on a 200-mesh
sieve. It is useful as an extender in high-build coatings such as
block fillers and texture paints where pigment fineness is not
a prerequisite.
VANSIL W-20 is a relatively coarse grade with 2% retained on
a 325-mesh sieve. It will disperse to a 0 to 1 Hegman fineness
when used at a level of three pounds per gallon, thereby prov-
iding some degree of film roughness where desired.
VANSIL W-30 disperses to a 4 Hegman fineness when used at a
level of three pounds per gallon. This grade provides smooth
paint films and is a general purpose extender.

icate pigment. It is a superfine grade exhibiting high bright-
ness and high oil absorption. VANTALC 6H is effective for gloss
control of coatings, particularly where film smoothness and
pigment suspension are important factors.

VEECOTE
Pyrophyllite
VEECOTE is a hydrated aluminum silicate produced from North
Carolina deposits of the mineral pyrophyllite. It is a relative-
ly coarse grade that is useful in coatings where fineness and
film smoothness are not of prime importance. VEECOTE exhibits
excellent properties as an extender pigment for exterior house
paint. Its platy particle shape contributes resistance to check-
ing and cracking. In addition, frosting of tinted latex house
paints is minimized.
