VITAMIN B6

 Effective & safe for pregnancy-induced nausea & vomiting


 No role in GERD, heartburn & gastric stasis
 No role in post-partum lactation
 Rather has negative impact on lactation

Doxylamine + Vit. B6 (Envepe)

 Doxylamine - antihistamine , not a specific anti-emetic


 Doxylamine – severe drowsiness is a most common side-effect
 Withdrawn from u.s in 1976 & from UK & other European countries in 1983
 Inconvenient dosage; 1 bid or 1+1+2 at bedtime
 No role in GERD, heartburn & gastric stasis
 No role in post-partum lactation

Meclizine + Vit. B6 (Navidoxine)

 Antihistamine , not a specific anti-emetic


 Withdrawn from U.K in 2006
 No role in GERD, heartburn & gastric stasis
 No role in post-partum lactation
 Only being used for nausea & vomiting
 Not safe in pregnancy

Dimenhydrinate (Gravinate)

 Combination of diphenhydramine (antihistamine) + chlorotheophylline (anti-


asthmatic)
 Diphenhydramine – not a specific anti-emetic
 Chlorotheophylline – CNS stimulant
 Effective for generalized nausea & vomiting
 Not safe / not recommended in pregnancy
 No role in GERD, heartburn & gastric stasis
 No role in post-partum lactation
Anti-Secretory drugs & Antacids (PPIs (Omeprazole, Rabeprazole), ds Antacids
(Mucaine, Gaviscon)

 No role in nausea & vomiting


 No role in post-partum lactation
 Effective for GERD, heartburn but with limitations for usage during pregnancy
 PPIs & H2R- reduce acid secretion and antacids neutralize acid secretion leads to
reduce iron absorption resulting in risk of anemia
 Omeprazole - FDA pregnancy category C
 Antacids may cause constipation or diarrhea

Malunggay, Sajina, Swanjna (Hilacta)

 Herbal medicine
 Has anti-inflammatory effect
 No role in pregnancy-induced nausea & vomiting
 No role in GERD, heartburn & gastric stasis
 Claimed to improve post-partum lactation (no scientific evidence on mode of action)
 Anti-fertility & abortificient

Domperidone (Motilium)

 Used for generalized nausea, vomiting, GERD, heartburn & gastric stasis
 Not recommended in pregnancy
 FDA – warning letter to pregnant mothers (unknown risk to mothers & infants-June
2004)
 Increased risk of seizures in neonates
 Not safe to improve post-partum lactation
 Not FDA approved (not available in USA)

Digestine

 Great advantage of OD dose in pregnancy
 Effective & safe even in 1st trimester of pregnancy
 Drug of choice for pregnancy-induced nausea & vomiting in several European
countries
 Effective & safe for GERD, heartburn & gastric stasis (in general as well as in
pregnancy)
 A logical treatment to promote post-partum lactation
