What is the origin of COVID-19?

On 31 December 2019, WHO was informed of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause in
Wuhan City, China. A novel coronavirus was identified as the cause by Chinese authorities on 7
January 2020 and was temporarily named “2019-nCoV”.
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel severe acute
respiratory syndrome coronavirus. It was first isolated from three people with pneumonia
connected to the cluster of acute respiratory illness cases in Wuhan. All structural features of
the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus particle occur in related coronaviruses in nature.

'CO' stands for corona, 'VI' for the virus, and 'D' for disease. Formerly, this disease was
referred to as '2019 novel coronavirus' or '2019-nCoV.' The COVID-19 virus is a new virus linked
to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and some types of
the common cold. The official names COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 were issued by the WHO on 11
February 2020.

Viruses are named based on their genetic structure to facilitate the development of
diagnostic tests, vaccines, and medicines. Virologists and the wider scientific community do this
work, so viruses are named by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV).

How long does it take for symptoms of the coronavirus disease to appear?
On average it takes 5–6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to
show, however it can take up to 14 days.

CAPACITIES AND VULNERABILITIES

The existing strengths of individuals in the district and its community of social groups
are related to people’s material and physical resources, their social resources, and attitudes.
Capacities are built over time and determine people’s ability to cope with crises and recover
from them. Vulnerabilities refer to the long-term factors which weaken people’s ability to cope
with the sudden onset of disaster, or with drawn-out emergencies.

This is also a guide in assessing a risk analysis process which is designed to help the
division, schools and its working community and partner organizations engage with contexts
where biological disasters are significant as a threat to health. This guide is designed to reduce a
community's disaster risk in a participatory manner. Steps include (1) making preparations (2)
collecting secondary data, (3) beginning work with the community, (4) analyzing hazards, the
impact of vulnerabilities, and capacities, (5) prioritizing risk, (6) developing a risk reduction
action plan, (7) putting the action plan into place.
The table below shows the human resources who share efforts and give involvement
in the above-listed activities with the participation of the coordinators in the lower level in some
of the activities
