Carmelite Prayer: A Simple Method

Our Lord taught Saint Teresa a simple method of prayer. It is

often called mental prayer. "I never knew what it was to get satisfaction and comfort out
of prayer," confesses the Saint, "until the Lord taught me this method — I beg of you to
test it."

The method is this: we know God is everywhere, but He dwells in the human heart in a
special manner. Close your eyes, then and look at Him, present there within you. This
look is already a prayer. This simple gaze gives glory to God. The whole problem, Saint
Teresa teaches us, comes from our not really grasping the fact that He is within us: "How
is it, Lord, that we do not look at Thy face when it is so near us?"

"Look at Him; keep Him company; talk to Him. Do not be foolish — speak with Him as
with a Father, a Brother, sometimes in one way, sometimes in another."

This manner of praying brings with it a thousand blessings. "Before long," says Teresa,
"you will see how you gain. There will be a gradual gaining of mastery over oneself. The
soul will be stronger for the fight."

"You will be laying a good foundation so that if the Lord desires to raise you to achieve
great things, He will find you ready because you will be close to Him."

"Gently recall your mind when it wanders ... unceasingly gather up again your scattered
spirit. Turn your inward eye once more towards Him ... persevere with an unconquered
heart."

moment, your Divine Companion; go about your duties in a quiet way.

I ordered the blue and brown one. The blue one’s a gift for someone so I couldn’t open it
and post about it. As always, St. Joseph’s Little Shop is the best. It felt a little painful to
open my package because it was so beautifully wrapped and the dedication was sweet.

* inscription in the St Benedict Crucifix and the Miraculous medal is clear. * rosary is very
lightweight and durable. * feels comfy to use, there’s enough free space for my fingers to
hold and move the beads in between. * i actually like the clacking sound when the metal
crucifix and medallion bumps into the wooden beads. * handcrafting is well thought of
and exquisitely done. * seller is so thoughtful and gracious! very accommodating to
requests and generous in prayers. * packaging is lovely! like a gift! All the variants are
beautiful, but having Flos Carmeli feels like having the same rosary as our saints (hello
there St Therese of Liseux, St Teresa of Avila, St Elizabeth of the Holy Trinity) as well as
our sisters now in the Monasteries which makes it a perfect aid in prayer and meditation,
it’s like praying with them hand-by-hand, really close!

The Final Prayer

Let us pray. O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and
resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we
beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary
of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what
they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

How to pray the Carmelite and Brigittine Rosary

Make the Sign of The Cross and pray the Apostles’ Creed.

1. On the first bead pray the Our Father.

2. Pray a Hail Mary on each of the next three beads.
3. Pray the Our Father on the additional Pater bead
4. Announce the first mystery.  
5. Recite one Hail Mary on each of the next ten beads while meditating on
the first mystery.
6. Pray the Apostles’ Creed
7. Pray The Fatima Prayer
8. Announce the second mystery and pray the Our Father.  Continue in
this manner until you have reached the center medal.
9. On the center medal recite the Hail, Holy Queen, the Closing Prayer
and finish by making the Sign of The Cross.
