"Ang Dapat Mabatid ng Mga Tagalog" by Andres Bonifacio, 1896

Brief summary:
• Ang “Dapat Mabatid ng mga Tagalog” was originally published under a newspaper
called KALAYAAN, it was the official newspaper of the organization KKK, led by
Andres Bonifacio.
➢ Unfortunately, it was destroyed by the Spaniards and none of its copy
survived.
• It was written purely for the Filipinos, hoping to open up their eyes and minds to
realize the Spanish’ s true intentions and to see what they have done to their
beloved country and its people.
• It also serves as a rallying call for the Filipinos.
• The letter that Andres wrote tells that Katagalugan used to have more freedom
over their own land back in the day.
• The Spaniards provided camaraderie. People expected them to help them
improve for the better.
• People supported and defended Legaspi, even if it meant going against their own
countrymen.
• The Spaniards’ promises were never fulfilled.
➢ Instead, they have a negative impact on Katagalugan’s life.
• In the last paragraphs of the letter, Andres Bonifacio convinced the Tagalogs to
take action and not allow others to mistreat or degrade the Katagalugan.
➢ People must be awakened and not be swayed by the words of
others.
• The Filipinos went to battle with the Dutch and Chinese in the event that they
wanted to transfer the Tagalog to the Spanish, and in return, what they gave us
was grief. Accordingly, now is the perfect moment to let us fight Spaniards with
all the awful they did to us.

"Sobre la indolencia de los Filipinos" by Jose Rizal, 1890

Brief summary:
• The Indolence of the Filipinos, was written by Jose P. Rizal, was a response to
the accusation that Filipinos were lazy and therefore why did they not work hard
during the Spanish Colonization.
• Rizal concludes that such indolence is rather an effect of the conditions and
circumstances created, if not brought about, by the Spanish regime, as well as
the local environment, and that it is not inherent to the Filipino.
• In the Middle Ages, and even in many Catholic towns of our days, everything that
the superstitious people cannot understand or the malice of men does not want
to confess is put to the devil's account; In the Philippines, indolence is attributed
to one's own faults and those of others, the clumsiness of some and the crimes
of others.
• The essay was published as a series of five pieces in Madrid’s Filipino weekly
review, La Solidaridad, from July 15, 1890, to September 15, 1890.
• One of the reasons Rizal wrote this essay is that he believes that the Philippines
has Indolence solely because of its nature, which is also known as predisposition
• Sobre la indolecia de los Filipinos Is a socio-political essay published in La
solidaridad in Madrid in 1890.
➢ Dr. José Rizal wrote it in reaction to the allegation of Indio or Malay
laziness. He acknowledges that the Filipinos are lazy, but he
believes it is due to a variety of factors.
• The lack of togetherness among Filipinos is another factor that may have
contributed to this indolence.
➢ The people lacked the ability to defend themselves against the
aggressive attacks of the government and other social forces
because they lacked unity and oneness.

Chapters Summarization
Chapter 1 Indolence does exist among Filipinos, as
Rizal concedes in his acknowledgment of
Gregorio Sancianco's earlier work, but it
cannot be linked to the nation's issues or
backwardness; rather, it is a result of such
factors. Previous analyses of indolence
have only ever focused on rejecting or
accepting the phenomenon rather than
thoroughly examining its causes. Before
treating indolence, Rizal advises studying
its causes. So, he lists the reasons for
indolence and goes into further detail
about the situations around it.
Chapter 2 According to Rizal, an illness would get
worse if the improper solution is offered.
The same is true of laziness. But people
shouldn't give up on the fight against
laziness. Rizal contends that the early
Filipinos were already active in trading
before the arrival of the Spaniards, both
within their own provinces and with other
nearby nations, as well as in agriculture,
mining, and Spanish-speaking
indigenous. All of this refutes the idea that
Filipinos are passive people by nature. Dr.
Jose Rizal concludes by speculating as to
why Filipinos might have forgotten their
history at that time.
Chapter 3 Rizal lists a number of possible causes for
the cultural and economic deterioration of
the Filipinos. The villages are in disarray
as a result of the many battles, rebellion,
and invasions. There has been a great
deal of chaos and devastation. Numerous
Filipinos have also been transported
abroad to serve in expeditions or fight in
battles for Spain. As a result, the
population has shrunk. Many men have
been taken to shipyards to build ships as
a result of forced labor. There are
undoubtedly underlying factors behind the
alleged laziness of Filipinos.

Chapter 4 Rizal argues that because they are not
their own masters, Filipinos are not to
blame for their sufferings. Since it began
to treat its surrounding trading partners
with such mistrust, the Spanish
government has neither promoted labor
nor commerce. Additionally, trade has
decreased as a result of pirate raids and
the numerous restrictions put in place by
the government, which also provides little
