SECTION-A

'' Creative writing uses imagination''. Do you agree with this

statement? Based on the classroom discussion, write a reasoned
answer.

Answer :-
Creative writing uses imagination, yes I completely agree with
this statement. Because the real engine of the creative writing
is the imagination.
If one cannot imagine then he/she cannot be a creative writer. It
gives one a power to make or create whatever he/she wants,
whether to create a
hero or villain, whether to create awareness among people about
some topic. A creative writer must posses the talent to imagine
quite effectively
as if they know how to imagine he/she can create anything out of
nowhere. And more importantly if one doesnot have ability to
imagine they would
not be able to write or if he/she writes anyhow or somehow it
would not be worth it. To be sure, there are many other
important, even more necessary
components that the creative writer must posses and bring to
bear, but they all emate from imagination, without which creative
writing is unattainable.
When everything is present and put into action then there is
synergistic effect, such that the whole will be greater than the
sum of its parts.
These include motivation, Grammer, practice and of course talent.
Without elements such as motivation and perseverance, talent will
lie dormant.
But without imagination, talent will lack the spark to spawn a
captivating or mermerizing story. Imagination may differ from
person to person and it is very unique.
It is unconquerable, as even a person confined to a cell can take
leave by conjuring up its magic. Yet, paradoxically, its
possessor must choose to
release it, to allow it to roam freely beyond the world that
surrounds us; to pull together elements we are already familiar
with and assemble them
in ways that we are unfamiliar with; to invent new characters
that had never existed before and endow them with their own
personalities; and to create
stories that never happened, yet which have the power to move the
reader to tears, anger, inspiration, action, and transformation.
The power of imagination
is infinite. It not only flows from the writer, but it also
enters the reader, stirring his/her imagination. When that
happens, the reader swells with the
capacity to transcend her own world, regardless of how mundane or

1
exciting it may be. It opens up new perspectives and
possibilities. Imagination in play may
lead to new lands of emotion, thought, and spirituality. The
reader is not only affected, but the writer herself may enter new
realms of insight into self,
others, and the world; the world as the writer knows it and the
world that the writer’s imagination has created. The author
must not allow the rules of her
craft to shackle her endeavors. Learn them, yes. Then, once they
have become an integral part of one’s unconscious, allow oneâ
€™s imagination to soar beyond
them without restraint. Trust that they, the rules, will know
when to exercise their rightful place in the universe of the
author’s process. Columbus never
set out to discover America when going to sea. In fact, the rules
of the day suggested that if one were to go too far out to sea,
an endpoint would be reached,
beyond which the ship and its voyagers would descend to some
dreaded unknown place. It took courage and faith to embark on the
journey. Those same attributes are
to be found in the writer who sets out, armed with her
imagination, to write a novel, even though the true course of the
excursion and its real ending may not yet
be envisioned, despite beliefs to the contrary. The writer’s
imagination instills the faith to begin and the courage to
continue persevering. Some people think of
problem solving as requiring imagination. And it does. However,
the next level is that of “problem finding. †When writing the
novel, the author will stumble across
many problems to be solved, but to enhance his/her story s/he
must also exercise her imagination to find new problems to
incorporate into her work, if the final product
is to be enhanced to become the most that it is capable of
becoming. The atrophy or lack of its use is sometimes self-
imposed. There is an old vignette about a huge
gorilla that had been captured in Africa and brought to America
for exhibit in a zoo. The gorilla had been temporarily placed in
a cage while around the cage there was
built an expansive “natural†environment for it to live in.
When the construction was completed, the gorilla was removed from
the cage. However, each step the gorilla
took was limited to the same space and size of the cage it had
lived in, even though it was now free to roam around the vast
territory that had been constructed to
accommodate it. Humans sometimes suppress the freedom of their
own imagination, hence refusing to go beyond what is immediately
present to their sensory apparatus,
failing to invent new images that extend beyond the familiar and
known, neglecting to visualize alternate worlds outside the realm
of that within which they live.
The creative writer must not restrain her imagination like the
gorilla in the fable, not taking advantage of the freedom he had

2
been endowed with, for imagination
is the touchstone of creativity. No one lacks imagination. It is
an inherent part of our makeup. Some may not conceive of
themselves as possessing it and others may
be deluded into believing that it is absent in them. For those
people, their conception of its presence must be expanded, for
the former, or the distortion of its
absence must be corrected for the latter. Otherwise, writers who
fall into either category will be reduced to the bane of
repetition and confined to the limitations
of the formulaic.

SECTION-B

Given below are two passages. Rewrite any one of the following
passages as a dramatic scene with dialogue scene with dialogue
and stage directions.

PASSAGE 1 :

STAGE 1:-
ONE DOLLAR AND EIGHTY-SEVEN CENTS,that's all, that's all she
had(Della) after she was done buying meat and other food
carefully. She was so unhappy with this much little money
that she had even counted them 3 times. Doesn't matters how many
times she counted it, it was all the same again and agin 0ne
dollar and eigty-seven cents. The bad timing about
that situation was that next day was the christmas. She was so
hopeless that could not help herself and fell on the bed and
started crying. Finally she did it. She was slowly
growing quieter as we can find out after the situation of the
house. The house was growing older as well as per the trends
resulting to the decresement of rent of furnished room
to only $8 a week. There is something more to say about it, the
hall was also not much bigger and it can be said as that it was
like a small letterbox which was unable to hold
letter. There was an electric bell as well although it was unable
to make any difference that was other thing. Also there was a
name beside the door;"Mr. James Dillingham Young".

STAGE 2:-
Some glimpses of past(FLASHBACK), When name of the place was Mr.
James Dillingham Young, the rent of that place was $30 per week
but now it was reduced to only $20 per week. Although

3
you must have noticed that the name was little bit longer and
important. It rather should have been Mr. James D. Young. But
there is certainly some fasinating news that his name would
certainly become shorter when he entered that furnished rooms.
Mrs. James Young would warmly put her arms arounf his shoulders
and call him "Jim'.

STAGE 1:-
Coming back to stage one, you alredy meet her(Della). She
finished her crying and cleans her face. She gradually stood and
looked towards the window hopelesly. All she could think was that
tommorow is christmas and she had only $1.87 and she really
wanted to buy some gift for her beloved "Jim". She had been
saving as much money as she could for the gift but all that she
could
manage was only $1.87. Althought it is true that $20 a week was
not sufficient enough.Everything that she was expecting to be
cheaper had become much expensive than before. She was thinking
about past and realising that it has always been like that and
she was with only $1.87 to buy a gift for his beloved "JIM". She
has also planned so long for this moment and now she was short
on money. She was planning to give him something nice to him as
something worth honor of belonging to "JIM". There was a glass
between the windows that you could find in the $8 furnished
rooms.
It was very narrow that a person could see only a little half of
himself at a time. However if someone is very skinny he might be
able to have a good look of himself. Although Della
being quiet thin mastered this art already. suddenly a thought
crossed her mind and she thought that it might could actually
work and she stood before that masterpeice glass with a shine
in her eyes and pale face. She quickly pulled down her hair and
let it fell to its comlete length.

STAGE 2:-
Again coming back to her flashbacks, the Youngs were proud of two
things one was the JIM'S Gold watch that belonged to his father
and the other thing was DELLA'S hair. They both were so
proud of their things that if any queen lived near their fully
furnished room she would have washed her hair and dried her hair
where the queen could see it. She believed that her hair was
more beautifull than any queen's jewels and gifts. Secondly "JIM"
believed that if a king lived in the same house with all his
wealth "JIM" would look at his watch everytime they meet.
Infact he believed that no jem of any king was match for his
watch.

STAGE 1:-
Back to the first stage Della looked at her beautifull brown
hair, shining like a falling stream of brown water. It was so big
that it reached her below her knees. It felt like she was
wearing some brown dress. Again she put all her hair up nervously

4
and looked up while one or two tear come down from her eyes. She
wore her old brown coat and put her brown hat and with
some bright light in her eyes she moved quikly out of the door
quickly and down to street.

STAGE 3:-
She went out and stopped at a sign which said "Mrs. Sofronie,Hair
Articles of all Kinds". She ran upto second floor and waited for
a moment to catch her breath.
DELLA= With cold eyes she asked "Will you buy my hair"?
Mrs. Sofronie= I buy hair,Take your hat off and let me look at
it.
Della took her hat off which looked like brown waterfall.
Mrs. Sofronie= Twenty dollars
Mrs. Sofronie lifted the hair(brown waterfall) to feel its
weight.
Della= Give it to me quickly.

After getting money she went off running from shop to shop for
about 2 hours to find a gift for Jim. After struggling for about
2 hours she finally figured out the gift for Jim. The gift
that she figured out was made for Jim. It was a gold chain very
simply made and it's value was in the rich and pure material.
Since it was made up of pure material and was very simple
and plain it was clear that it was very valuable. All good things
are like this she thought and it was perfect for the watch.
