Expansion of liquids
Name: ......................................................................................................... Class: ............................... Date: ...................................

Liquids expand more than solids when they are heated. Liquids such as mercury and amyl alcohol are used in
thermometers.

Mercury thermometer
1. The bulb contains mercury. If the bulb is heated, the mercury expands up the capillary tube and the temperature
is read on the scale.

Record the temperature using the scale of the thermometer: ……………………………..C

2. Samples of mercury and amyl alcohol with the same volume at 0 C were heated and their volumes measured
every 10 C. The data was graphed.

a. Identify two pieces of information that need to be added to this graph. Add these to the graph.

d. Mercury thermometers are commonly made for two temperature ranges (−10 C to + 110 C and −10 C to
+360 C), whereas alcohol thermometers are restricted to the lower range. Use the graph to suggest a reason
for this difference.
