New type M.E.A.S.(microencapsulatedanaerobicsealant)fastenersare beingintroducedso that jointing
compoundsor other sealantsneed not be used when the fastenersare fitted in throughholes into oil or
warerways.
The identification
of these fasteners,as supplied,is by a red, blue, or other colour sealantaround the
fastenerthreads.
With M.E.A.S.sealedstuds,the sealedend mustbe fittedintothe cylinderhead/cylinder
blocketc.
Ensurethat the threadedholes have a 1,59mm(1Aain)45" chamfer,so that when the new fastenersare
fittedthe M.E.A.S.sealantis not removed.
lf the fastenershave to be removedand fittedagain, the threadsmust be cleanedand a suitablesealant
used.
Throughoutthis manual, whenever"|eft"or "right"handsideof the engineis referredto, it is that sideof the
enginewhenviewedfromthe flywheelend.
EngineNumberlocation
Withearlierengines, the enginenumberwas stampedon the auxiliary drivehousingimmediately belowthe
fuelinjection pump- see Figs.41 and A3 (item'10).lt consistsof figuresand letters,e.9.,3544U251T. The
firstthreefiguresrepresentthe cubiccapacity,i.e.,354in3:the fourthfiguredenotesthe enginemodeland
the letter"U" signifiesthatthe enginewas builtin the UnitedKingdom. The lastgroupof figurescomprises
the engineserial number. Otherletterswhichmayfollowthe serialnumberdenotespecificinformation, i.e.,
a letter "T" indicatesa turbocharged engine:a letter"L" indicates a lip type seal on the rear end of the
crankshaft.
For currentengines, the enginenumberconsistsof fifteenlettersand figures,a typicalnumberbeing

An engine with perfect or little worn cylinderbores can
sometimesconsumean excessiveamountof lubricating oil
due to glazing. When fittingnew piston rings to cure this
problem, it is essentialthat the cylinder bores are first
de-glazed.
A tool is availablefor de-glazing,marketedunderthe trade

is idealfor thispurposeas it doesnot removeany appreciable
amount of metal and producesa good quality cross hatch

It can oftenbe used with the enginein situ if usedwith a hand lf the liners are found to be worn over the acceptable

(T6.3544enginesonly)
T6.3544CC engines have an air charge cooler integral
with the inductionmanifold(see Figs. A.5 and A.6).
Another method of cooling the air between the outlet of
the compressor side of the turbochargerand the

Air Cleaners
Operatingconditions play an important part in deciding
how frequentlyit is necessaryto servicethe air cleaner.
Where the cleaner has a dust bowl fitted, the amounr
of dust present in the bowl when removed, will show
whether it is being emptied at the correct time for the
prevailing conditions. lf the dust bowl is allowed to
become full, it will reduce the life of the element.
lf an automatic dust ejector is fitted, it should be kept
clean and the lips of the rubber ejector checked to see
that they close, but do not adhere together. N.2
