Dear Student
1 INTRODUCTION
We are pleased to welcome you to the teaching practice module. The Teaching Practice is your
professional development and an integral component of Initial Teacher Education (ITE)
Programme. This ITE programme is an accredited requirement of Teacher Education as
mandated by the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications (MRTEQ).
This tutorial letter contains Assessment 1 and important information on teaching practice
requirements.
PLEASE NOTE:
ALL enquiries regarding your placement and other TP Admin related matters should be
directed to the Teaching Practice Office coordinator of the province in which you are
planning your placement. Refer to Tutorial letter 102.
Please do not contact the TPO with queries related to Assessments, and content of the
module and/or submission of your Assessments; for these matters contact your module
lecturers.
Similarly, do not contact your lecturer(s) about school placement and/or TP admin related
queries.
Please ensure that you read and understand the guidelines applicable to your teaching
practice modules. When selecting a school, please make sure that the school of your choice
offers your registered teaching practice phase.

You may not conduct two teaching practice
modules at the same time. This means the dates
must be different.
TPF3704 5 weeks For this module, you are required to complete: 4th DR MM
• Grade R - 1 week (5 consecutive days) MANYAKA
• Grade 1 - 1 week (5 consecutive days)
• Grade 2 - 1 week (5 consecutive days)
• Grade 3 - 2 weeks (10 consecutive days)
• The lecturers and Teaching Practice Office are aware of the different schools terms of
government and publics schools, as well as international school terms.
• The teaching practice must be completed within the timeline provided and the requirements
specified by the University. Kindly, align your teaching practice dates to the school
calendar.
All attempts will be made to avail supervisors to all 3RD and 4th year to be supervised during the
teaching practice placement. This does not exclude 1st and 2nd levels should you be contacted for
supervision.
3.2 Placement

• All arrangements must be made at the beginning of the academic year immediately after
registration. The necessary study material needs to be read before any arrangements are
made with the respective school you are planning to do your teaching practice at.
• It is compulsory to request permission from the principal of the school at which you intend
doing your teaching practice. Your study material (Tutorial letter 102) and assessment
requirements must be provided to the principal as proof of what is expected of you during
the five weeks teaching practice.
• Proof of placement is needed before you start your teaching practice. Complete the Online
TPU tool on myUnisa to obtain proof of placement (tutorial letter 102)
• You will also be blocked, and no submission of any assessment will be accepted.
• If you are registered for two TP modules, no school-based placement may overlap or be
conducted at the same time. Ensure that the proof of placement form for each module
reflects the correct number of weeks
• Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) requires 5 weeks for each TP
practice year module.
• Make sure you submit your assessment within three weeks of teaching practice completion
then only can you start with second module you are registered for. For example: if
registered for TPF3703 and TPF3704 each should be 25 independent days
• Your placement application must contain all the TP modules you have registered for in
your 2023 registration.
• Any student found conducting or completing Teaching Practice concurrently will fail to
meet the TP requirements.
• During 2023, If a student attempts to do two TP modules for 5 weeks instead of 10 weeks,
only one placement will be recognized (based on the year level) which means one TP
module will have to be redone either before the closing date, or re-registered for the
following year.
• All changes to placement dates and problems must be communicated with your
workstation/provincial coordinator from the Teaching Practice Office. The details are in Tut
102, which must be read in detail.

4.1 Monitoring of placement
• The TP office will monitor your placement accordingly
• Any transgression on the placement is against the DHET requirements and you will not
graduate.
• The proof of placement will also have to be added to assessments 1,2,50 and 51.
• The proof of placement dates and the dates of the attendance register in all the
assessment should be the same. Any changes to TP dates should be arranged with the
TPO office.
• All teaching practice assessments must be submitted 3 weeks after completing the
teaching practice (TP) irrespective of the month in which you complete your TP. You will
be penalized for every you are late.
• No student is allowed to go to the school without proof of placement.
4.2 Abiding by the rules of the school
• The principal must be provided with all the requirements of Teaching Practice when you ask
for permission to do it at the particular school.
• You must arrive in the morning when school starts and leave when the school ends. No
Special arrangements are allowed for individual students. You may not do one day or odd
days a week.
• You must complete your teaching practice in a registered DBE (Department of Basic
Education) school and no TP placement at any home-schooling center is
allowed. International schools must contact the placement office coordinator (Tut 102)
• All placement changes to dates and problems must be communicated with your
workstation/provincial coordinator from the Teaching Placement Office. The details are in
(Tut 102)

as well as refer to all the announcements on the TPF3704 module site.

4 ASSESSMENT 1
This assessment must be submitted before you commence your teaching practice at the school
and before the closing date.
• Students who do not submit Assessment 1 before the closing date and before
commencing teaching practice will not be granted admission to the examination.
• This further means you will not be able to continue with your teaching practice and all
further submissions will be blocked.
• You will then have to register for the module again in 2024.
• teaching practice schools detail/s which you applied for on the teaching practice online
booking or links must be provided in the school information form
• if you are going to two different schools you will need two forms
The proof of placement which is sent to your myLife email address by the placement office based
on the online completion thereof must be signed and stamped by the principal.
• The Student View function must be used which is located on the myUnisa
Student Portal.
