TWO Church of Ireland
rectors have broken ranks
to reject Archbishop Alan
Harpers appeal for an end
to discussion on the churchs
frst same-sex union involving
a minister.
In a sign of growing
impatience in sections of the
church three weeks after the
News Letter revealed the
move, there are indications
that, if the church does not
act, evangelicals may fnd
their own bishops.
In separate statements, the
Rev Neville Hughes and the
Rev Alan McCann rejected
the primate of all Irelands
call to curtail discussion.

Agonising wait for
Karens family
THE family of missing Ballycastle
woman Karen Coyles may have to
wait another four to fve days for the
formal identifcation of a body found
in Scotland on Thursday, it emerged
last night.
Their traumatic ordeal was further
compounded after police in Scotland
said a post-mortem examination
would not be carried out until next
Friday, some eight days after the
body was found on a shore on the
Mull of Kintyre. Ms Coyles, 47, has
been missing since September 11.
Una Kelly, a close friend of Karen
and vice chairperson of the camogie
club in Ballycastle, said the family
have been left devastated by the
delay.
I dont think anyone can really
understand what they are going
through at the minute, but to be
told that they will have to wait until
the middle of next week has really
devastated them, Una told the
News Letter.
They just want to fnd out if it is
Karen, it would bring some kind of
comfort for them to know where she
is. Turn to page 12

New chief of LMC
outlines priorities THE Livestock and Meat Commissions (LMCs) newly appointed chief executive has told Farming Life that the organisation will continue to play a key role at the very heart of the redmeat sector in Northern Ireland. The review of the commission was completed earlier this year and the minister concluded that we will retain our non department public
body status for the foreseeable future. My main priority will be to ensure that we continue to carry out our agreed activities in the most effective and effcient way possible, Ian Stevenson commented. As it is currently constituted the commission has responsibility for the co-ordination of the redmeat Farm Quality Assurance Scheme; market analysis, in tandem with the provision of independent price reporting to Brussels; the delivery
of education services and a strategic input into the development options for the redmeat sectors in Northern Ireland. Mr Stevenson continued: These are areas of work which the various stakeholder groups within the beef and lamb sectors have asked us to carry out. The newly appointed chief executive is very aware of the fact that the commission has been down-sized signifcantly post the recent review of the organisation
and one of the most immediate priorities is to ensure that LMC is suitably prepared to meet the demands of its levy payers and stakeholders. Commenting on the current state of the beef and lamb markets, Mr Stevenson pointed out that much of the gains recently secured in terms of better farmgate prices had been swallowed up by the increase in costs incurred by every producer.
