Background-

Why did he write the song?

Bob Marley, was a musician who created songs that were motivated by the societal and
political issues that he saw that was occuring in his country. He wanted for his listeners
to dig deeper and look beyond the surface when it came to societal issues. He didn't want
us to still be brainwashed by the media and manipulated. He wrote this song to motivate
this generation to take control, and to free our still from the mindset that hindered us in
the past and still until now.

What activism brought him to write the song?

He was motivated to write this song due to the historical aspect of slavery and he refers to
this with old language of ‘sold I’ and “Rob I” “Merchant Ships” but more so because of
the slavery mentality that we are still living in. Even though slavery has been abolished
they are still aspects of it everywhere, and the biggest one is our mindset. The slavery
mentality. He warns us of how all the great leaders that try to be of revolution are the
ones being executed, “They kill our prophets, while we stand and look” he claimed.
Emancipate yourself from mental slavery” - he reminds us that liberation is both an inner
personal experience but most especially an act of solidarity to the other. He is trying to
enlighten people that the leaders that we have today are products of propaganda and
corruption, and they are part of modernizing slavery. Where it's no longer directly
happening to us but more so of the mind.

Composure of this song:

The song was recorded with live acoustic guitar and his singing. The
song contains 3 verses and repeated chorus. The song is about 3
minutes and 56 seconds and Mr. Marley uses a lot of repetitions to
empathize with the message is trying to convey, and continuously
emphasizes that songs like these are the songs of freedom that will
help us to forward in this generation.

Conclusion:
To conclude, Bob Marley wrote this song to encourage this generation to take control,
and similarly to how they abolish slavery they can also abolish the midset. Open their
eyes, and realize that the system that we are living in is still corrupted and controlled by
the higher ups, just that now it is not so much directly but indirectly. He uses the
historical context of slavery to paint the picture that what was happening in the past is
still now happening just to modernize.

[Verse 1]
Old pirates, yes, they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships

Minutes after they took I

From the bottomless pit

But my hand was made strong

By the hand of the Almighty

We forward in this generation

Triumphantly

[Chorus]
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs

[Verse 2]
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds

Have no fear for atomic energy

'Cause none of them can stop the time

How long shall they kill our prophets

While we stand aside and look?

Ooh, some say it's just a part of it

We've got to fulfill the book

[Chorus]
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Redemption songs

[Acoustic Break]

[Verse 3]
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our mind

Whoa! Have no fear for atomic energy

'Cause none of them-ah can-ah stop-ah the time

How long shall they kill our prophets

While we stand aside and look?

Yes, some say it's just a part of it

We've got to fulfill the book

[Chorus]
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs

[Outro]
All I ever have
Redemption songs

These songs of freedom
