Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih

Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih were half-sisters who were opposite to each other. Bawang
Merah is a greedy lazy girl, spoiled by their mother, while Bawang Putih is obedient, diligent,
and does all the tasks without complaint.

One day while washing in the river, Bawang Putih lost her scarf, which was taken by an old
woman. The old woman said she would return the scarf if Bawang Putih cooked and cleaned
her house.

Bawang Putih did as she was told, got back the scarf and the old woman as a gift told her to
bring home one of her two pumpkins, small or large.

Bawang Putih chose the smaller pumpkin. When she opened the pumpkin at home, she found
the fruit full of jewels.

Bawang Merah and their mother were jealous and wanted their pumpkins filled with jewelry
too, so they went to the river and accidentally lost their scarf. Then they visited the old woman's
house and asked for a pumpkin.

They brought home a big one (of course), but instead of jewelry, their big pumpkin was filled
with snakes.

Syahdan touched it, the fish turned into a beautiful woman.

The fish that turned into a beautiful woman then told her that she was cursed. Fish were cursed
for violating a prohibition made by the kingdom of heaven. The fish also said that on earth he
did not have anyone.

Feeling sorry for the fish, Syahdan allowed him to stay at Syahdan's house. Then over time
together, Syahdan ventured to propose to the woman. The application was then accepted.

However, the woman incarnated by the fish gave Syahdan one condition. He gave a condition
that if one day it was to anyone, including his son, Syahdan could not reveal the secret about
who the woman really was and what had happened to her. He also can't say fish-man in front
of anyone.
Syahdan also agreed to these conditions. Eventually they both got married and a few moments
later they were blessed with a son. The boy's name is Samosir. It's just that unfortunately, the
character of the child is not so good. He always eats and eats as if he never feels full.

When he had just returned from the field, one day Syahdan felt hungry. He immediately
checked the food on the dining table. How angry he was to know that the food on the dining
table had run out because Syahdan had eaten it while he was hungry after returning from the
field.

Feeling angry, Syahdan called his son and then cursed and rebuked the child. He said loudly to
his son, "You eat all my food, you little fish!/ son of a fish!"

Syahdan's anger made him violate the marriage taboo that his wife had proposed and reveal her
wife's secret as well. Suddenly, the sky was suddenly dark and it was raining heavily.

On the ground where Samosir had stepped on, a lot of springs gushed out and didn't stop. The
results of the rain and springs that gush then turn their residence into a lake called Lake Toba.

While the small island in the middle is called Pulau Samosir which is the name of Syahdan's
son who was rebuked.

The main lesson to be learned from the folklore above is not to let anger get the better of you
and cause you to say something bad. Especially when someone has asked and trusted you to
keep their secret, no matter what happens, don't ever reveal a secret that must be kept.
