GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The KCS 305 Slaved Gyrocompass System is composed of three units: KSG 105
Slaved Directional Gyro, KMT 112 Magnetic Azimuth Transmitter and KA 51A/51B Slav-
ing Accessory.
NOTE
The System, developed for general aviation use, furnishes primary heading data to
ARINC standard heading indicators, automatic flight control systems, and flight director
systems. Pilot operated controls allow selection and monitoring of system performance.
Mode control inputs allow either automatic or manual slaving of the output heading vec-
tor, provided on dual ARINC type synchro transmitters. Automatic fast slaving assures
rapid initial Synchronization of the heading vector to true magnetic heading within two
minutes following turn-on. Thereafter, automatic slow slaving provide sufficient correction
for gyro drift and geomagnetic variations.
The KSG 105 Slaved Directional Gyro is a remote mounted unit which processes signals
from the KMT 112 Magnetic Azimuth Transmitter. Two electrically isolated output syn-
chros provide the gyro-stabilized heading signal to pilot displays and flight control sys-
tems.
The KA 51A Slaving Accessory is a panel mounted unit which contains the slaving meter,
slaving controls, and a circuit which compensates for the effect of local magnetic distur-
bances on the Magnetic Azimuth Transmitter.
The KA 51B performs the same function as the KA 51A, but it has the advantage of a
remote mounted compensator when depth behind the panel is restricted.
The KMT 112 Magnetic Azimuth Transmitter senses the direction of the earth's magnetic
field and transmits this information to the Slaved Directional Gyro.
The KCS 305 Slaved Gyrocompass System is composed of three units: KSG 105
Slaved Directional Gyro, KMT 112 Magnetic Azimuth Transmitter and KA 51A/51B Slav-
ing Accessory.
Gyro stabilized magnetic heading data is provided by dual synchro transmitters, con-
tained in the KSG 105, which can directly couple into ARINC standard heading indica-
tors, automatic flight control systems, and flight director systems.
The KMT 112 Magnetic Azimuth Transmitter senses the direction of the earth's magnetic
field and transmits this information to the Slaved Directional Gyro.
The KSG 105 Slaved Directional Gyro contains a heading gyroscope, electronic com-
puter and a servoed synchro assembly which furnishes accurate, stabilized 3-wire data.
When power is first applied to the KCS 305 System and the slaved gyro mode is
selected, the heading signal furnished by the KSG 105 will be automatically aligned with
the magnetic direction reference transmitted by the KMT 112. The speed at which this
occurs and the time allowed to perform this function will depend upon the part number
and/or mod status of the KSG 105. On the KSG 105 (PN 060-0013-00), this initial align-
ment will occur at a slew rate of 14 degrees/second for approximately 1.5 minutes after
which it will automatically revert to a slower "normal" slew rate of 2.5 degrees/minute. On
the KSG 105 (PN 060-0013-01) without mod 4, the fast slew rate of 14 degrees/second
will switch to the slower “normal” slew rate of 2.5 degrees/minute after a maximum of 20
seconds. The KSG 105 (PN 060-0013-01) with mod 4 and the KSG 105 (PN 060-0013-
02) both have a fast slew rate of 3 degrees/second and will switch to the slower “normal”
slew rate of 2.5 degrees/minute within 70 seconds after turn on. Long term drift-free
accuracy is assured by maintaining continuous alignment at this normal slew rate. On all
versions of the KSG 105, if the selected operating mode is cycled to "FREE" and then
back to "SLAVED" by means of activating the "SLAVE" switch on the KA 51A/51B, the
automatic turn on sequence will be repeated. On the KSG 105 (PN 060-0013-01) only,
the automatic turn on sequence will be repeated if the detected gyro rate exceeds it’s
monitor limit.
The pilot may select the "FREE" gyro mode which disengages the magnetic slaving loop
and allows the heading indication to be manually positioned by activating the clockwise
or counterclockwise switches on the KA 51A/51B. Failure detection circuitry will actuate
compass warning annunciators in most installations.

SLAVING RATE: "SLAVED" Mode Normal - 2.5 degrees per minute
Fast - 14 degrees per second (3o/second
for KSG 105-01 with Mod 4, and KSG
105-02)
HUMIDITY: Up to 95 percent
The KSG 105 gyro is a remote mounted unit which provides gyro-stablized aircraft head-
ing information to pilot displays and flight control equipment.
Dual ARINC type synchro transmitters are mechanically positioned by a stepper motor
which is sequenced by pulses developed at the gyro-gimbal shaft-encoder. Long term
alignment to magnetic North is maintained by actuating the stepper motor in response to
an error signal developed in the flux valve control transformer (geared to the output syn-
chros). Due to the discrete positioning behavior of the stepper motor, the output vector
will track the true or slaved heading in 1/4 degree increments.
Slaving rates are determined by the mode of operation, which is selected by the pilot
using the “SLAVE” switch on the KA 51A/51B. In the "FREE" (decoupled flux valve)
mode, activating the “CW” or “CCW” switches on the KA 51A/51B allows the pilot to man-
ually apply a slaving rate of 10o per second, but no compenstion is otherwise provided for
gyro drift. In the "SLAVED" mode (coupled to flux valve), automatic fast slaving occurs at
14o per second for approximately 1.5 minutes following turn-on for a KSG 105 (PN 060-
0013-00) and 20 seconds maximum for a KSG 105 (PN 060-0013-01) without mod 4. On
a KSG 105, PN 060-0013-01 with mod 4 and PN 060-0013-02, automatic fast slaving
occurs at 3° per second and slow slave occurs within 70 seconds after turn-on. Thereaf-
ter, slaving will continue automatically, at the slow rate of 2.5° per minute on all versions.
A "heading valid" flag control relay (DPDT) may be used to control system warning
A. Loss of power
The KSG 105 generates all signals required to drive the flux valve and compensators.

The KA 51A slaving accessory is a panel mounted unit that displays the slaving error
between the KMT 112 and KSG 105 by means of a small illuminated meter movement.
In addition, three pushbutton switches are provided below the slaving meter. The center
switch is an alternate action switch that engages the "Slaved Gyro" mode when
depressed. When the switch is in its outer position the KCS 305 is in the "Free Gyro"
mode. The other two pushbutton switches are momentary, and provide clockwise and
counterclockwise manual slaving.
The KA 51A also contains circuitry through which hardiron effects upon the KMT 112 can
be compensated by the adjustment of two potentiometers. Access holes labeled N/S
and E/W are provided on the front surface of the KA 51A for access to these two potenti-
ometers.

INSTALLATION
Exercise extreme care when unpacking the equipment. Make a visual inspection of the
unit for evidence of damage incurred during shipment. If a claim for damage is to be
filed, save the shipping container to substantiate the claim. The claim should be
promptly filed with the transportation company. When all equipment has been removed,
place in the shipping container all packing, bracing, and filler used in the original packing.
Save the packing material for use in unit storage or reshipment. Listed below are factors
and suggestions to consider before installing the KCS 305 Gyrocompass System. Close
adherence to these suggestions will assure a more satisfactory performance from the
equipment.
CAUTION
The equipment has been completely tested before leaving the factory. To ensure that the
equipment has not been damaged in shipment, it is suggested that the pre-installation
bench test be performed. The bench test harness or aircraft cables wired per Figure 2-6
are required for this test. Inputs and performance are indicated in the component techni-
cal characteristic specifications, paragraph 1.4.
2.3.1 General
The KSG 105 Gyro is a remote mounted unit that provides gyro stabilized magnetic
heading when coupled to the KMT 112 Transmitter.
CAUTION
The KSG 105 must be mechanically isolated from direct contact with the airframe by use
of the KSG 105 vibration mounting rack assembly, PN 071-04025-0001, per Figure 2-2.
This assembly consists of a mounting tray to which are attached four, independently-sus-
pended, vertical-axis, spring type vibration absorbers. The mounting surface should be
such that when the aircraft is in level flight the KSG 105 will be level within ±5° in any
direction. Using the connector provided, connect the wiring as shown in Figure 2-6.
2.4.1 General
The KMT 112 transmitter detects the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field
and transmits it to the KSG 105 Gyro for use as long term correction information.
2.4.2 Mounting
The KMT 112 should be located as far as possible from all sources of local magnetiic dis-
turbances such as engines, electrical cables, or radio equipment. A wing tip or tail sec-
tion location will usually be satisfactory. The use of a handheld compass can be helpful
in determining if the selected area is free of magnetic disturbance. The mounting surface
should be such that when the aircraft is in level flight the mounting flange of the KMT 112
will be level within +2o. The unit should be secured per Figure 2-3 with the three #6-32
non-magnetic screws and associated non-magnetic hardware that are provided in the
Installation Kit. Using the connector provided, connect the wiring to the unit as shown in
Figure 2-6.
2.5.1 General
The KA 51A slaving accessory is a panel mounted unit that contains the slaving meter,
slaving switches, and corrector circuitry which compensates for the effect of local mag-
netic disturbances.
2.5.2 Mounting
The KA 51A is mounted from the front of the aircraft panel and should be secured per fig-
ure 2-4 with four (4) #4-40 screws that are provided with the unit. Using the connector
provided, connect the wiring to the unit as shown in Figure 2-6.
2.6.1 General
The KA 51B Slaving Accessory is a panel mounted unit that contains the slaving meter,
slaving switches, and corrector circuitry which compensates for the effect of local mag-
netic disturbances.
2.6.2 Mounting
The KA 51B is mounted from the front of the aircraft panel (the compensator assembly
may be remote mounted) and is secured per Figure 2-5 with two (2) #4-40 screws pro-
vided in the Installation Kit. Using the connectors provided, connect the wiring to the unit
as shown in Figure 2-6.
2.7 ADJUSTMENTS
The small slaving indicator in the KA 51A/51B, although shielded, is still susceptible to
magnetic and electrical interference occuring in and around the aircraft instrument panel.
This interference, depending on the KA 51A/51B's location in the instrument panel can
cause an observable indicator needle offset in the compass system during power ON
and/or power OFF conditions. The following adjustment procedures should be used to
align the compass system more accurately.
For a KA 51A, remove the housing from the unit and connect a digital millivolt meter to
the rear of the slaving indicator. Attach the common millivolt meter lead to the black wire
and the positive lead to the red wire. For a KA 51B, use the red (positive) and black (neg-
ative) test jacks on the sides of the meter assembly.
With the complete KCS 305 system operating and synchronized, position the aircraft on
a compass rose and turn it to each of the four cardinal headings. Place the KA 51A/51B
in the "Free Gyro" mode and center the slave meter with the manual slave switches on
the KA 51A/51B at each of these headings. Record the algebraic error between the
compass rose and the heading indicator. Add the algebraic errors and divide by four to
obtain the index error. Loosen the mounting screws on the KMT 112 and rotate the unit
an amount equal to the index error to cancel out the index error.
2.7.2 KA 51A/51B
With the complete KCS 305 compass system operating and the KA 51B in the "Free
Gyro" mode, position the aircraft on a compass rose. Remove the two mounting screws
that secure the unit to the panel and slide the unit out until the meter test jacks and com-
pensator potentiometers are accessible. If the compensator assembly is remote
mounted, gain access to the compensator potentiometers. Connect a digital millivolt
meter to the unit test jacks (common connection of the millivolt meter to the black test
jack of the KA 51B and positive connection of the millivolt meter to the red test jack of the
KA 51B). Adjust the compensation as follows:
A. Place the aircraft on a North heading and center the compass card NORTH under the
Lubber line with the CW/CCW switch. Place a non-magnetic blade screw driver in the N/
S potentiometer on the KA 51B Compensator Assembly and zero the external millivolt
meter (0.0VDC + 50mV).
B. Place the aircraft on a East heading and center the compass card East under the
Lubber line with the CW/CCW switch. Place a non-magnetic blade screwdriver in the E/
W potentiometer on the KA 51B Compensator Assembly and zero the external millivolt
meter (0.0VDC + 50mV).
C. Place the aircraft on a South heading and center the compass card South under the
Lubber line with the CW/CCW switch. Place a non-magnetic blade screwdriver in the N/
S potentiometer on the KA 51B Compensator Assembly and adjust the external millivolt
meter for 1/2 of the existing millivolt meter readout.
D. Place the aircraft on a West heading and center the compass card West under the
Lubber line with the CW/CCW switch. Place a non-magnetic blade screwdriver in the E/
W potentiometer on the KA 51B Compensator Assembly and adjust the external millivolt
meter for 1/2 of the existing millivolt meter readout.
As a final check of the KCS 305 compass system, position the aircraft on the compass
rose and turn to each of the four cardinal headings while the KCS 305 system is in the
"Slaved Gyro" mode. All readings should be within + 2° of those on the compass rose.
Next, with the aircraft on a NORTH heading and the KCS 305 system turned OFF, but all
the other aircraft systems are still ON, adjust the KA 51A/51B indicator movement to zero
the slaving indicator. The KA 51A/51B can now be reassembled in the aircraft; the align-
ment is complete.
No adjustments required.
SECTION III
OPERATION
3.1 PREFLIGHT CHECKOUT
A quick check of the basic gyro compass system may be performed as follows:
Prior to application of power to the KCS 305 System, verify that the gyroscope has been
off for at least ten minutes in order to assure that the spin motor is at rest. Next, place
the system in the "Free Gyro" mode by setting the "Slave In" pushbutton on the KA 51A
to the "out" position or by placing the KA 51B "Slave/Free" toggle switch to the "Free"
position.
Upon application of power, the COMPASS FLAG in the pilot's heading indicator should
remain in view for nearly 30 seconds. Retraction of the flag indicates that the gyro is
coming up to speed.
Manual compass card positioning may be checked by depressing the two Heading Drive
pushbutttons located on the KA 51A or by toggling the clockwise and counterclockwise
switches on the KA 51B. Note that the COMPASS FLAG appears during manual slaving.
In order to ckeckout the automatic slaving mode, manually set the COMPASS card to a
reading 90 degrees removed from true aircraft heading. Next, place the system in the
slaved mode and observe that the compass card rotates to within 2 degrees of local
magnetic heading. Within 1-1/2 minutes on a KSG 105, PN 060-0013-00, 20 seconds on
a KSG 105, PN 060-0013-01, or 70 seconds on a KSG 105, PN 060-0013-01 with Mod 4
or KSG 105, PN 060-0013-02, the compass flag will retract, and automatic slaving will
continue at the slow rate of 2.5 degrees/minute.
The slaving meter on the KA 51A/51B indicates the instantaneous error between the
compass card presentation and the signal from the flux valve. At middle-north latti-
tudes, one division on the meter scale corresponds to approximately 2 degrees of error.
Meter indications are valid only during steady, level aircraft attitudes.
Departures from level flight may now be made without affecting the accuuracy of the
compass readings.
The slaving meter on the KA 51A/51B indicates the instantaneous error between the
compass card presentation and the signal from the flux value. At middle-north latitudes,
one division on the meter scale corresponds to approximately 2 degrees error. Meter
indications are valid only during steady level flight conditions.
Normally, any heading errors which develop in the gyro are corrected automatically at a
rate of 2.5 degrees/minute. This mode is selected by the "Slave-In" switch on the KA
51A or the "Slave/Free" switch on the KA 51B.
Decoupling of the flux valve by retracting the "Slave-In" switch on the KA 51A or placing
the KA 51B to the "Free" mode, allows the pilot to manually synchronize the heading card
to the reference of his choice at the manual slave rate of 10 degrees/sec. Long term drift
of the gyro must be taken into account under this condition.
Generally, this system is left in the "Slave" mode at all times. During aircraft power-up
the compass system will initiate the automatic fast slave cycle for 1-1/2 minutes on a
KSG 105, PN 060-0013-00, less than 20 seconds on a KSG 105, PN 060-0013-01, or
less than 70 seconds on a KSG 105, PN 060-0013-01 with Mod 4, and then revert to the
normal slave rate. If the "Slave" switch should be cycled, or if gyro power is momentarily
disrupted, the automatic fast slave cycle will be re-engaged.
3.3 EMERGENCY
Appearance of the COMPASS FLAG during normal conditions indicates that a power dis-
ruption, or malfunction has occured in the Gyrocompass System and the indicated head-
ing is in error. A brief power disruption to the KSG 105 will cause the automatic slave
mode to shift to "Fast" for 1-1/2 minutes on a KSG 105, PN 060-0013-00, less than 20
seconds on KSG 105, PN 060-0013-01, or less than 70 seconds on a KSG 105-0001
with Mod 4 or KSG 105, PN 060-0013-02. If, after this period of time, the COMPASS
FLAG persists, place the system in the "Free Gyro" mode and attempt manual slaving.
Ability to manually swing the meter pointer full scale left and right generally indicates a
properly operating flux value amplifier. In this case, in spite of a gyroscope failure, the
operator may elect to actuate the manual clockwise and counterclockwise heading drive
switches to keep the meter centered. During a COMPASS FLAG condition the pilot
should rely on backup systems if at all possible.
