Section 2: Reading Comprehension

A- Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.
Martin Luther King, Jr., is well known for his work in civil rights and for
his many famous speeches, among them his moving "I Have A Dream"
speech. But fewer people know much about King's childhood. ML., as he was
called, was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, at the home of his maternal
grandfather. M.L.'s grandfather, the Reverend A.D. Williams, purchased their
home on Auburn Avenue in 1909, twenty years before Mt. was born. The
Reverend Williams, an eloquent speaker, played an important role in the
community since so many people's lives centered around the church. He
allowed his church and his home to be used as a meeting place for a number
of organizations dedicated to the education and social advancement of blacks.
M.L. grew up in this atmosphere, with his home being used as a
community gathering place, and was no doubt influenced by it.
Mt.'s childhood was not especially eventful. His father was a minister and
his mother was a musician. He was the second of three children, and he
attended all-black schools in a black neighborhood. The neighborhood was
not poor, however. Auburn Avenue was the main artery through a prosperous
neighborhood that had come to symbolize achievement for Atlanta's black
people. It was an area of banks, insurance companies, builders, jewelers,
tailors, doctors, lawyers, and other black-owned or black-operated businesses
and services. Even in the face of Atlanta's segregation, the district thrived. Dr.
King never forgot the community spirit he had known as a child, nor did he
forget the racial prejudice that was a seemingly insurmountable barrier that
kept black Atlanta's from mingling with whites.

B- Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer from a, b, or d:
Did you see that?" Joe said to his friend Bill. "You're a great shooter!" Bill caught
the basketball and bounced it before throwing it again.
The ball flew into the net. "Bill, you never miss!" Joe said admiringly.
"Unless I'm in a real game," Bill complained. "Then I miss all the time."
Joe knew that Bill was right. Bill performed much better when he was having fun
with Joe in the school yard than he did when he was playing for the school team in front
of a large crowd.
"Maybe you just need to practice more," Joe suggested. "But I practice all the time
with you!" Bill objected. He shook his head. "I just can't play well when people are
watching me." "You play well when I'm watching," Joe pointed out.
"That's because I've known you since we were five years old, " Bill said with a
smile. "I'm just not comfortable playing when other people are around." Joe nodded and
understood, but he also had an idea.
The next day Joe and Bill met in the school yard again to practice. After a few
minutes, Joe excused himself. "Practice without me," Joe said to his friend.
"I'll be back in a minute." Joe hurried through the school building, gathering
together whomever he could find two students, a math teacher, two secretaries, and a
janitor. When Joe explained why he needed them, everyone was happy to help. Joe
reminded the group to stay quiet as they all went toward the school's basketball court.
As Joe had hoped, Bill was still practicing basketball. He made five baskets in a
row without noticing the silent people standing behind him. "Hey, Bill!" Joe called out
finally. Bill turned. A look of surprise came over his face. "I just wanted to show you
that you could play well with people watching you," Joe said. "Now you'll have nothing
to worry about for the next game!"

Section 2: Reading Comprehension

C- Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer from a, b, or d:
London is the capital of Great Britain. It is situated in the southeast of
England on the River Thames and there are lots of bridges across the Thames.
The most famous of these bridges is Tower Bridge. The machinery which
draws up the bridge when a ship passes under it is hidden in the two towers.
Near Tower Bridge, on the north bank of the Thames there is the Tower Of
London. It is a big castle, its oldest part, White Tower, dates back to the times
of William the Conqueror. Back in history The Tower served as a prison -
now it is one of London's main tourist attractions. Tourists are guided by
"Beefeaters" in historic uniforms and the Crown Jewels are on display there.
Another magnet for tourists is St. Paul's Cathedral. It is Sir Christopher
Wren's masterpiece. Like many other churches it was built after the great fire
had destroyed big parts of London in 1666. It is 110 metres high and 627 steps
lead up to the Whispering Gallery in the dome. In 1981 the royal wedding
between Prince Charles and Lady Diana was celebrated there.

19

The London home of the Queen is Buckingham Palace where you can see
the "Changing of the Guards". The coronation of the Kings and Queens takes
place in Westminster Abbey. Near this enormous church there are the Houses
of Parliament, the seat of the British government. They consist of a group of
buildings, among them St. Stephen's Tower, the famous clock tower housing
Big Ben, one of the world's biggest bells.
Not far from the Houses of Parliament there is Trafalgar Square with Lord
Nelson's Column, erected in the memory of Admiral Nelson, who won against
the Spanish in the Battle of Trafalgar.
London is also famous for its parks. There is Hyde Park, there is St.

bottom, they are locked in place. Players try to make lines go across the screen
with no gaps. Complete lines disappear. This gives players more room. The blocks
pile up during the game. The game ends when the blocks get to the top of the

F- Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer from a, b, or d:
Linguists believe that the languages of about one-third of the human race all
developed from one Indo-European Language. But who were the speakers of this
ancient language? It is said that you can deduce a people's history from the words
they use. From the words the indo European used, it seems that they lived a half-
settled life, half nomadic existence. They had horses, oxen, and sheep. They
plowed, planted, worked leather, and wove wool. They worshipped gods who are
clear ancestors of Indian deities. However, exactly who the original Indo-
Europeans were and when they lived remains a "Mystery" The most widely
accepted theory locates the Indo-Europeans in a cold, northern climate where
common words for snow and wolf were important. Indo- European language had
no word for sea. From this, and it is clear that the Indo- Europeans must have lived
somewhere in northern central Europe.

G- Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer from a, b, or d:
"Click!" That's the sound of safety. That's the sound of survival. That's the
sound of a seat belt locking in place. Seat belts save lives and that's a fact. That's
why I don't drive anywhere until mine is on tight. Choosing to wear your seat belt
is a simple as choosing between life and death. Which one do you choose?
Think about it. When you're driving in a car, you may be going 60 MPH or
faster. That car is zipping down the road. Then somebody ahead of you locks up
his or her brakes. Your driver doesn't have time to stop. The car that you are in
crashes. Your car was going 60 miles per hour. Now it has suddenly stopped. Your
body, however, is still going 60 MPH. What's going to stop your body? Will it be
the windshield or your seat belt? Every time that you get into a car you make that
choice. I choose the seat belt.
Some people think that seat belts are uncool. They think that seat belts
cramp their style, or that seat belts are uncomfortable. To them I say, what's more
uncomfortable? Wearing a seat belt or flying through a car windshield? What's
more uncool? Being safely anchored to a car, or skidding across the road in your
26
01123700989 ‫سفير التفوق‬
jean shorts? Wearing a seat belt is both cooler and more comfortable than the
alternatives.
Let's just take a closer look at your choices. If you are not wearing your seat
belt, you can hop around the car and slide in and out of your seat easily. That
sounds like a lot of fun. But, you are also more likely to die or suffer serious
injuries. If you are wearing a seat belt, you have to stay in your seat. That's no fun.
But, you are much more likely to walk away unharmed from a car accident.
Hmmm... A small pleasure for a serious pain. That's a tough choice. I think that I'll
avoid the serious pain.
How about giving money away? Do you like to give your money away?
Probably not. And when you don't wear your seat belt, you are begging to give
your money away. That's because kids are required to wear seat belts in every state
in America. If you're riding in a car, and you don't have a seat belt on, the police
can give you or your driver a ticket. Then you will have to give money to the city.
I'd rather keep my money, but you can spend yours how you want.
Wearing a seat belt does not make you invincible. You can still get hurt or
killed while wearing your seat belt. But wearing them has proven to be safer than
driving without them. You are much less likely to be killed in a car wreck if you
are wearing a seat belt. You are much less likely to get seriously injured if you are
wearing one. So why not take the safer way? Why not go the way that has been
proven to result in fewer deaths? You do want to live, don't you?
