Hammer Mill:
It is a mill whose purpose is to shred or crush
aggregate material into smaller pieces by the repeated blows of
little hammers
The Hammer mill can be used as Primary, Secondary and Tertiary
Crushers. Hammer mills are of different sizes starting from the one
utilizing household current to the one that utilizes up to 3.5 MW.

Principle:
Hammer mills work on the principle that most materials
will crush, shatter, or pulverize upon impact.

Construction:
It consists of the following main parts,

 Crushing Chamber
 Hammers (Fixed or swinging)
 Rotating Shaft
 Feed and Discharge(Screen)
 Plates

Working:
Feed is entered from top of the mill by gravity. The
material is struck by the hammers which are attached to the shaft
which rotates with high speed. The material is crushed by the hammer
impacts, collisions with the wall and particle to particle collisions.
The discharge is perforated screen through which the size of the
product is controlled.

Factors Affecting Product Size:

The product of a Hammer Mill
mainly depends mainly upon the Speed of Rotating Shaft and also on
the Size of the Screen but it also depends on the number of Hammer
used in the particular Hammer Mill.

Screen-less Hammers:
In areas where the replacement or
repairing of the damaged screen is not possible, Screen less Hammer
mills are used. They instead of using screens use flow to separate the
smaller and larger particles. These Hammer mills are more energy
efficient and are 25% cheaper.

Applications:
It has a number of applications a few of which are,

 A farm machine, which mills grain into coarse flour to be fed

to livestock.

 Shredding scrap automobiles.

 Shredding yard and garden waste.

 Crushing large rocks.
