DYNAMICS OF MACHINERY

Course Outcomes: At the end of the course, the student will be able to
CO1: Determine gyroscopic couple and its effect and analyze dynamic forces in slider crank mechanism
(L3)
CO2: Analyze clutches and brakes, and describe dynamometers. (L4)
CO3: Calculate turning moment in flywheels and equilibrium speed for governors. (L3)
CO4: Analyze balancing of shafts with rotating and / or reciprocating masses (L4)
CO5: Calculate the natural frequencies in longitudinal, transverse and torsional vibrations (L3)

UNIT- I 10 Lectures
Gyroscopes: Angular velocity, angular acceleration, gyroscopic couple, gyroscopic effect on aeroplanes,
ships, stability of four-wheel and two- wheel automobiles, rigid disc at an angle fixed to a rotating shaft.
Dynamic Force Analysis: Slider crank mechanism, dynamically equivalent system, engine force analysis,
turning moment of crankshaft, inertia of connecting rod.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. calculate the gyroscopic effects on aeroplanes, ships and automobiles (L3)
2. differentiate between active and reactive gyroscopic couple (L2)
3. determine turning moment on crankshaft in slider crank mechanism (L3)

UNIT- II 10 Lectures
Pivots, Collars and Clutches: Pivots and collars, uniform pressure, uniform wear, Types of clutches–
single-, and multi-plate.
Brakes and Dynamometers: Types of brakes – Block brake, band brake, disc brake, band and block brake,
internal expanding shoe brake, effect of brake. Types of dynamometers - Prony, rope brake, belt
transmission, epicyclic train, Bevis-Gibson torsion dynamometers.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. determine frictional torque in pivots and collars (L3)
2. calculate dimensions of clutches (L3)
3. describe working of various brakes and dynamometers (L2)

UNIT- III 10 Lectures


Flywheels: Turning moment diagrams, fluctuation of energy, flywheels, dimensions of flywheel rim,
applications.
Governors: Types of governors, principles of inertia and centrifugal governors- Watt, Porter, Proell,
Hartnell, Hartung. Sensitiveness, hunting, isochronism, stability, power, effort, controlling force of a
governor.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. calculate the turning moment for flywheels (L3)
2. differentiate between flywheel and governor (L2)
3. explain different types of governors (L2)

UNIT- IV 10 Lectures
Balancing: Static and dynamic balancing of rotating masses, force balancing of four bar linkage, Primary
and Secondary balancing of reciprocating engine, balancing of inline four stroke engines (2,4,6 cylinders),
V-engines, three cylinder radial engines, direct and reverse crank method, introduction to field balancing.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. explain static and dynamic balancing using force and couple diagrams (L2)
2. determine unbalanced forces and couples in rotary and reciprocating engines (L3)
3. analyze unbalanced forces in different types of common crank engines (L4)

UNIT- V 10 Lectures
Free Vibrations: Definition, types, basic features, degrees of freedom, free undamped longitudinal
vibration – equilibrium method, energy method, Rayleigh’s method, displacement, velocity, acceleration,
effect of mass of spring; damped vibration, logarithmic decrement; torsional vibrations – single and two
rotor systems
Forced Vibrations: longitudinal vibrations - harmonic excitation, magnification factor, vibration isolation
and transmissibility; Transverse vibrations, single concentrated load, uniformly distributed load, several
loads, Dunkerley’s method; whirling of shafts.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. determine natural frequencies of longitudinal, transverse and torsional vibrations (L3)
2. explain undamped, damped and forced vibrations (L2)
3. calculate vibration transmissibility (L3)
