SUBJECT – ENGLISH TERM 1 ASSIGNMENT 5
TOPICS –INTEGRATED EXERCISE / HOLIDAY HOMEWORK
________________________________________________________________________________________
ENGLISH READING
1. To feel for others and to do righteous acts of help to living creatures is indeed kindness. If one can ease the
aching in one‟s life or cool one‟s pain, he has not lived in vain. To some, helping others is a matter of faith. An
elderly stranger went to a hospital in Peter Borough, New Hampshire and performed countless tasks: sweeping,
dusting building ramps, washing clothes etc. for four months. He never revealed his identity. Only after he had left
the place, the hospital staff realised that he was former Vice President of the Peninsular Railroad, a private railway
company in the U.S.A.
2. All along the route of Edinburh Way, thousands of people hailing from all classes of society held soft banners to
pay homage to Lord Shaftesbury, a well renowned social reformer of England. In India, saints and sages have
preached the gospel of service to the sick, the suffering and the distressed. In every town in India, there are a few
sympathisers to the suffering who pay the tuition fees of the poor students, give books and stationary, pay
allowances to needy widows and arrange their daughter‟s marriages, give blankets in winter and umbrellas in
monsoons. Added to them, there are many persons who have given up there everything for the service of humanity.

On the basis of your understanding of the above passage, answer the following questions:
i. According to the passage, an act of kindness is -
(a) what heals people in pain
(b) an act of generosity
(c) highly valued
(d) all of these
ii. To some helping others is a matter of faith and not exhibiting one’s deeds. Justify this statement with
reference to the paragraph 2.
iii. Mention the result of the fact as stated here.
FACT AS A RESULT
There are a few sympathisers who have extended
their aid to others.

iv. Substitute the word ‘popular’ with ONE WORD similar in meaning, in the following sentence from
paragraph 1.
This popular personality has achieved great success in life.
v. Select an appropriate title for the paragraph:
(a) Kindness, a gift extended to humanity
(b) Generosity is the only key to success
(c) Kindness is all about give and take
(d) Empathy is a slight gift to humanity

Please note – All the questions of this comprehension to be done in your writing-skill note-book.

answer and (-3) marks are awarded for every incorrect answer and zero for questions
not attempted.
i) Abhinav gets eight correct and ten incorrect answers. What is his score?
ii) Swagata gets 15 correct and 9 incorrect answers. What is her score?
iii) Pragati scored 90. If she has not done any wrong attempt then how questions she
attempted?

2. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas in the human body. It helps to regulate
blood sugar level and absorbs glucose to get energy. The number of required units of
insulin varies according to the individual. In some cases, an individual body is not able
to produce enough insulin. For those individuals, supplementary units of insulin are
injected into the body.
i) A doctor uses this formula to calculate the daily insulin units required for Amit’s
body.
Daily insulin requirement (units)=0.55×Total body mass (kilograms)
Amit’s body mass is 80 kg. What is Prakhar’s daily insulin requirement?

Q2 Case based type question:-

There is a very short range of temperature of a clinical thermometer, i.e. from 35°C to 42°C. The
short range of a clinical thermometer is because of the fact that the temperature of human body
normally does not go below 35°C or above 42°C.

Just above the bulb containing mercury, a clinical thermometer has a kink in its glass tube which is
to prevent the back flow of mercury into the thermometer bulb when the thermometer bulb is
removed from the mouth of a patient. This kink prevents the mercury level in the thermometer tube
from falling on its own. Due to this, we can read the correct body temperature of the patient even
after removing the thermometer bulb from his mouth.

Q12. CASE STUDY 1:

Leaves are the food factories of plants. Therefore, all the raw materials must reach the leaf.
Water and minerals present in the soil are absorbed by the roots and transported to the leaves.
Carbon dioxide from air is taken in through the tiny pores present on the surface of leaves.
These pores are surrounded by ‘guard cells’. Such pores are called stomata.Water and minerals
are transported to the leaves by the vessels which run like pipes throughout the root, the stem,
the branches and the leaves. They form a continuous path or passage for the nutrients to reach
the leaf. They are called vessels. The leaves have a green pigment called chlorophyll. It helps
leaves to capture the energy of the sunlight. This energy is used to synthesise (prepare) food
from carbon dioxide and water.Since the synthesis of food occurs in the presence of sunlight,
it is called photosynthesis (Photo: light; synthesis :to combine). So we find that chlorophyll,
sunlight, carbon dioxide and water are necessary to carry out the process of photosynthesis. It
is a unique process on the earth. The solar energy is captured by the leaves and stored in the
plant in the form of food. Thus, sun is the ultimate source of energy for all living organisms.

GEOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT 5
TOPIC-INTEGRATED EXERCISE / HOLIDAY HOMEWORK

TOPIC: UNDERSTANDING THE EARTH

A. It is not possible to know about the earth’s interior by direct observations because of the
huge size and the changing nature of its interior composition.
It is an almost impossible distance for the humans to reach till the center of the earth (The
earth’s radius is 6,370 km).
Through mining and drilling operations we have been able to observe the earth’s interior
directly only up to a depth of few kilometers.
The rapid increase in temperature below the earth’s surface is mainly responsible for setting a
limit to direct observations inside the earth.
But still, through some direct and indirect sources, the scientists have a fair idea about how the
earth’s interior look like.
Direct Sources:
1. Rocks from mining area
2. Volcanic eruptions
Indirect Sources
1. By analysing the rate of change of temperature and pressure from the surface towards
the interior.
2. Meteors, as they belong to the same type of materials earth is made of.
3. Gravitation, which is greater near poles and less at the equator.
4. Gravity anomaly, which is the change in gravity value according to the mass of
material, gives us information about the materials in the earth’s interior.
5. Magnetic sources.
6. Seismic Waves: the shadow zones of body waves (Primary and secondary waves) give
us information about the state of materials in the interior.

Answer the following questions on the basis of the above paragraph.

Q1. Why it is impossible to know the earth’s interior by direct observation?
Q2. What are the indirect sources for knowing about the earth’s interior?
Q3. Name some mining areas from your state and any two from neighbouring states.
Q4. Imagine yourself as a Geologist and suggest few other ways to reach the bottom of the
earth.
Q5. Kolar gold mine in Karnataka is situated at a depth of 3000 meters whereas Jhariya coal
field is situated at a depth of 79 meters. Suggest your opinion about the temperature changes
that a miner will experience in both of these fields.
B. Imagine yourself as a cave architect and you have been given the responsibility to
construct an artificial cave in India totally made of rocks. But there are some terms and
conditions for it. Here are those-
1. The walls of the cave should contain multi coloured rocks.
2. There should be a fire place made up of dark coloured rocks.

C. Imagine a builder has bought an area in a swampy land which is covered by three ponds.
Two ponds were fully covered with concrete and he started his construction work on it and
one of them is left for amusement and boating.
Q1. What changes you will notice in the ecosystem of those two ponds? Draw and explain.

D. It is with no exaggeration that it can be said that the earth is heading for destruction. But
efforts are being made to address these global concerns. People are becoming more aware
that the little things that they do every day do have an effect – whether negatively or
positively is up to discretion.
Every aspect of our ecosystem is important – because when one goes, the rest will follow.
Imagine this scenario… When the global temperature continues to rise, the glaciers will melt.
The sea levels will rise and coastal cities will be inundated, killing millions of people.
Economies will stop and will be severely burdened in trying to sustain everyone. Farms will
be flooded, there will be no food. It goes on and none of it is a pretty picture. So while we
still can, let’s do our share to stop degrading our ecosystems. Our lives depend on all of us
interacting in a sustainable environment.
Answer the following questions on the basis of the above paragraph.
Q1. How can we save our own Ecosystem?
Q2. Explain with an example from your daily life the 3 R’s.
Q3. What will be the after effect of rise in sea level in West Bengal?
