EM-5 Synchronizing an Alternator with the Grid

Synchronous Machine
Three-phase, 3 kVA, 50 Hz, 4 poles, 1500 rpm
Armature (rotor): Y-connection, 415 V, 4.2 A
Field (stator): 220 V, 1.4 A

DC Machine
5 HP,1500-2500 rpm, Armature: 440 V, 9.5 A, Field: 220 V, 2.3 A

For synchronizing alternator supply with the existing grid , the following
conditions are to be met. Both supply should have identical (1) Phase sequence,
(2) Voltage, (3) Frequency, (4) Phase
Synchronizing an Alternator with the Grid
Connection Diagram

Procedure:
Step-1: As synchronous machine is mechanically coupled to DC machine, energize the DC
motor first.
Step-2: Energize the field winding of synchronous machine.
Step-3: With the aid of phase sequence meter, check the phase sequence of alternator
supply and grid. If those are different, change any two phases of alternator.
Step-4: Observe the voltage and frequency of alternator supply and grid.
(a) To match the frequencies, adjust the primemover speed. For this, vary the armature
voltage of DC motor.
(b) To match the voltages, adjust the field excitation of alternator.
Step-5: Turn on the synchroscope (device that indicates the instant by which the two
supplies get synchronized). The frequency deviation is indicated by a moving light dot.
The clockwise movement indicates that the frequency of incoming alternator is higher than
that of existing bus. The frequency is to be adjusted by changing the speed of primemover
(DC motor) such that the light dot becomes steady at 12 o’clock position. This corresponds
to identical frequency and phase of the two supplies. At this instant, turn ON the Sync
switch. Now, two supplies are synchronized.
Observe the following practically and provide justification.
(a) What happens if the armature voltage of DC motor is increased?
(b) What happens if the field excitation of alternator is increased?
