PRE-BOARD II EXAMINATION (2022-23)

CLASS – XII
PHYSICS
General Instructions-
(1) There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and
Section E. All the sections are compulsory.
(3) Section A contains eighteen MCQ of 1 mark each, Section B contains seven
questions of two marks each, Section C contains five questions of three marks each,
section D contains three long questions of five marks each and Section E contains
two case study-based questions of four marks each.
(4) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in section
B, C, D and E. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
(5) Use of calculators is not allowed.

SECTION – A

21.What will be the ratio of the radii of two nuclei of mass numbers 1 and 27?

Find out the longest wavelength of the first line of the Lyman series of hydrogen spectrum.

22. State how focal length of a glass lens of refractive index 1.5 changes when it is
completely immersed in a liquid of refractive index 1.65
23.The forward characteristics curve of a junction diode is shown in figure:

Calculate the resistance of the diode at:
V = 0.5 V
I = 60 mA

OR
The circuit diagram shown in the figure contains two diodes, each with a forward
resistance of 50 ohm and with infinite backward resistance. If the battery voltage is 6 V.
Find the current through the 100 ohm resistor.

24.The two slits in Young’s double slit experiment are separated by a distance of 0.03 cm.
When light of wavelength 5000 Å falls on the slits, an interference pattern is produced on a
screen 1.5 m away. Find the distance 4th bright fringe from the central maximum.
25.The electric field due to a charged conducting sphere of radius 10 cm, at a distance of 20
cm from the centre of the sphere is 1.5 x 10 3 N/C and points radially inwards. What is the
charge on the sphere?
SECTION – C
26.A body is suspended from the lower end of a vertical spring. What shall be the effect on
the position of the body when a current is sent through spring? Does it depend upon the
direction of current in the spring?
27.A small bar magnet M passes through a circular coil with a constant speed, as shown.
Draw a graph showing variation of the emf e induced in the coil as a function of time t?

28.An LCR circuit with 100 Ω resistance is connected to an AC source of 200 V and angular
frequency 300 rad/s. When only the capacitance is removed, the current lags behind the
voltage by 60°. When only the inductance is removed, the current leads the voltage by
60°. Calculate the current and the power dissipated in the LCR circuit.
OR
Show graphically the dependence of inductive reactance, capacitive reactance, current
and impedance on frequency of alternating RLC circuit.
29.If the frequency of incident light on the cathode of a photocell is doubled, how will the
following change:

30.The ionization energy of the hydrogen atom is given to be 13.6 eV. A photon falls on a
hydrogen atom which is initially in the ground state and excites it to the n=4 state. (i) Show
this transition in the energy- level diagram (ii) calculate the wavelength of the photon (h =
4.14 x 10-15 eV s, c= 3.0 x 108 m/s)
SECTION – D
31. (a) Derive the expression for the electric potential at any point along the axial line of an
electric dipole.
(b) How would you combine 8,12 and 24 µF capacitors to obtain (i) minimum capacitance,
(ii) maximum capacitance? (iii) If a PD of 100 V be applied across the system, what would
be the charges on the capacitors in each case?

(a) Two point charges, q1 = 10 × 10 C, q2 = -2 × 10-8C are separated by a distance of 60
-8

cm in air.
(i) Find at what distance from the 1st charge q1, would the electric potential be zero.
(ii) Also calculate the electrostatic potential energy of the system. 
(b) A thin straight infinitely long conducting wire having charge density X is enclosed by a
cylindrical surface of radius r and length l, its axis coinciding with the length of the wire.
Find the expression for the electric flux through the surface of the cylinder.

32.(a) ‘n’ identical cells, each of emf E and internal resistance r, are connected in series to a
resistor R. Deduce an expression for the current flowing in the circuit.
(b) Draw circuit diagram of a balanced Wheatstone bridge and obtain the relationship
among the resistors used. Write its applications.
OR
(a) When the ends of a wire are connected to a battery, initially the current is slightly
larger, but soon it decreases and becomes steady at a lower value. Why?
(b) State Kirchhoff’s laws for electric circuits and write the corresponding association of
conservation of the quantities. Draw diagram in support of laws.

33.(a) In Young’s double slit experiment, show graphically how intensity of light varies with
distance.
(b) For any prism, show that refractive index of its material is given by n= sin[(A+ δ m)2] /
sin(A/2) where symbols have their usual meaning.
OR
(a) Suppose the two slits in Young’s Apparatus are illuminated by two identical but
independent monochromatic light sources. Will you observe interference pattern on the
screen? Explain your observation in detail.
(b) A ray of light passing through an equilateral triangular glass prism from air undergoes
minimum deviation when angle of incidence is 3/4 th of the angle of prism. Calculate the
speed of light in the prism.

SECTION – E
34.Case Study : Interference of Light
Answer the following questions based on given figure:

(i) What is the path difference between the two light waves coming from coherent
sources, which produce 3rd maxima?
(ii) In a Young’s double slit experiment, the separation between the slits is 0.1 mm,
the wavelength of light used is 600 nm and the interference pattern is observed on
a screen 1m away. Find the separation between bright fringes.
(iii) Explain the statement, “light added to light can produce darkness.”
OR
Give two differences between Interference and diffraction of light.

Read the following paragraph and answer the questions
When the diode is forward biased, it is found that beyond forward voltage V = V K called
knee voltage, the conductivity is very high. At this value of battery biasing for p-n diode,
the potential barrier is overcome and the current increases rapidly with increasing forward
voltage. When the diode is reversed biased, the reverse bias voltage produces a very
small current about a few micro amperes which almost remains constant with bias. This
small current is reverse saturation current
i) In which condition p-n diode is in forward biased?
ii) In the case of forward biasing in p-n junction diode explain the direction of
conventional current in the given condition.
iii) The V-I characteristic of diode is shown in the figure. Calculate the ratio of forward to
the reverse bias resistance.

If an ideal junction diode is connected as shown find out the value of current I.
