The Poor Man’s Fortune

hat in his hands. The man was thinking about all people around him earning a lot of money but never being
happy with what they had. He looked at the dog following him and said out aloud: “If I only had enough

Healthy Food

Eating is fun, especially when you are hungry. Most people have a favourite food. Some people enjoy
eating sweet things like cakes, chocolates and ice cream. Other people enjoy savoury foods like cheese

Food helps us to keep warm, talk, run and do all the other things we do. It helps us to grow and stay
healthy.
Vitamins also help us to be healthy and we can get them from our food. Scientists name vitamins after
the alphabet. All of them are very important, for example: vitamin C keeps our skin and gums healthy. It
is found in fresh fruit and green vegetables, such as oranges, blackcurrants, lettuce. Brussels sprouts and
spinach also contain a lot of vitamin C.
Vitamin D helps our bones to grow strong and hard, and we are able to make it for ourselves if our skin
gets enough sunlight. But we can also get vitamin D if we eat fish, milk, butter, cheese and margarine.

Getting a Weekend Job

Last summer I wanted to start earning money so I could save to go on holidays with my friends. But
if you are under eighteen, you are limited to what jobs you can do. I applied for jobs at a few shops in
my neighbourhood but none of them had any jobs for teens. I thought I would never find a weekend job.
Then, one day my mum gave me the local newspaper and showed me an advert for the local zoo. They
were looking for teenagers to work at the weekend. So I immediately applied for that job online.
With a few days, I got a phone call asking me to go for an interview. I put on my best clothes and
went to the zoo's office the next day to meet the manager. The interview must have gone very well
because when I got home, I got a phone call from him saying that I got the job. He asked me if I could
start following Saturday. And of course I said yes!

On Saturday morning, I got up very early and went to the zoo. I was there too early and the gates were
still locked. At nine o'clock the manager arrived to open the zoo. He took me to the staffroom (комната

a pair of boots. He told me that the ground was wet and dirty everywhere so I would need them.
My first job was to clean the elephant house. It was great fun because I was with another girl that had
been working there for some months. She was really friendly and gave me lots of tips (советы). And
there were two baby elephants trying to play with us. They were very funny! My colleague (коллега)
told me that our next job was to clean the lion's cage. I was really scared but luckily the lion wasn't in

A Day in the Life of Simon Carrot

At 12:30 pm was time for lunch. I was very hungry! I sat down at the table feeling very happy
because the Latin lessons were over. And then I saw what was for lunch: meat pie, boiled potatoes
and cabbage. I hate vegetables! But I ate a few, because I was so hungry.

exciting game of football with Mike and George, but it ended in a draw.
After school at four o’clock, Pete and I bought some sweets and I went to his house to listen to
music.

One day a boy found a brown bear-cub in the forest. He was very little and looked like a puppy. The boy

Every day the boy went to school. The bear-cub went with him and waited for the boy in the field.

At first the other boys were afraid of the bear-cub, but soon they became great friends. Many of them

and a large brown bear walked into the classroom. The boys were afraid. Some ran to the door, others

But the bear did not touch the pupils. He walked up to the fire and warmed himself. He felt quite at
home. He was very glad to get into such a warm room. He sat by the fire, and then walked up to the
table and ate some bread. Then the bear walked out of the house.

Back to School

My name is Daniel. I’m a student of the 7 grade. I’d like to tell you about school holidays.

Honestly I am not a brilliant student. My marks are really bad sometimes but atmosphere here is more
important for me. Here I have met real friends and my teachers are nice. My mom says that one day I
will miss this place and I am sure I will. Luckily it’s not so far so I can come here any time.

My favorite time at school is the time when we come back after holidays. Teachers and children are full
of energy and news. We missed each other and we have many things to talk about.

Now the holiday has just finished and all of us are here again. I think during these few days we have
changed a little. Boys became more quiet and the girls became more beautiful. I know one day I will
miss these people.

I never feel sad when I comeback to school. Some pupils don’t want and they prefer to play computer
games at home. But I am different. I like communication and here I have many fellows is my class and
in some other classes. We can go out together. But I feel school makes us more organized and friendly.

I am not a big fan of lessons but I go to school every morning with a smile on my face. I am looking
forward to see my friends and teachers, to play during breaks, to play football during physical education.
School is not only marks and homework. During the lesson we learn to respect, to take care, to cover
each other, we often have a lot of fun. I will have only good memories about my school and I will
always be happy to come back here.
