a. The color of the China rose solution turns green when it is added
to____________ solution.
i. Water ii. Salt solution
iii. Soap solution iv. Vinegar
Answer: Soap solution (iii)
b. ______________ is a natural indicator.
i. Turmeric ii. Methyl orange
iii. Water iv. Phenolphthalein
Answer: Turmeric (i)
c. _______________ plays an important role in the process of digestion.
i. Tartaric acid ii. Sulphuric acid
iii. Hydrochloric acid iv. Nitric acid
Answer: Hydrochloric acid
d. ________________ is also known as milk of magnesia.
i. Calcium hydroxide ii. Magnesium hydroxide
iii. Sodium hydroxide iv. Potassium hydroxide
Answer: Magnesium hydroxide (ii)

2. Fill in the blanks with the words given in the brackets.

a. Red litmus paper turns blue in basic (acidic/basic) solutions.
b. Tartaric (Citric/Tartaric) acid is used for silvering mirrors.
c. Sodium chloride (Sodium chloride/Sodium nitrate) salt is formed by the reaction
of hydrochloric acid with sodium hydroxide.

3. State whether the following statements are True (T) or False (F).
a. Grape juice is basic in nature: False
b. Sodium bicarbonate is acidic in nature: False
c. All bases dissolve in water: False
d. Methyl orange is a synthetic indicator: True

4. Match the following. Column A Column B

Column A Column B
a. Tartaric acid ( Tanning of i. Explosives
leather)
b. Nitric acid (Explosives) ii. Beverages
c. Carbonic acid (Beverages) iii. Water purification
d. Ascorbic acid (Water iv. Tanning of leather
purification)

5. Answer the following questions in one word or a sentence.

a. Which acid is present in lemon?
Answer: Citric acid
b. Which indicator is extracted from lichens?
Answer: Litmus
c. Which acid is used as a food preservative?
Answer: Acetic acid
d.Which substances give a soapy feeling when rubbed between the fingers?
Answer: Bases

6. Answer the following questions in short.

a. What are synthetic indicators?
Answer: Indicators that are prepared from artificial or man-made substances are
known as synthetic indicators.

b. What happens when an acid reacts with a base?

Answer: An acid reacts with a base to form salt and water.
c. Name any two salts and state their uses.
Answer: Name of two salts and their uses are:
1. Ammonium sulphate- used as fertilizer
2. Sodium chloride- used to enhance the taste of food and as a food
preservative.
d.How are acid burns treated?
Answer: They are first washed with plenty of water and then treated with a dilute
solution or a paste of baking soda. The baking soda neutralises the effect of the
acid.

7. Give reason.
a. It is a common practice to apply a paste of baking soda on a bee sting.
Answer: An ant or bee sting contains formic acid. It can be treated by using a base
that will neutralise the formic acid. A paste of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate),
calamine lotion (contains zinc carbonate) or soap can be used to neutralise the
sting.
b. Factory waste must be treated before discarding it in river water.
Answer: Several industries produce waste which contains strong acids. If these
wastes are directly allowed to flow into rivers, they will adversely affect aquatic
life. To avoid this, wastes are first treated with bases like calcium oxide or
magnesium oxide to neutralise the harmful effects of the acids.
c. Toothpastes play a very important role in preventing tooth decay.
Answer: Toothpastes are basic in nature and help to prevent tooth decay by
neutralising the acids produced by action of bacteria on the various food items
that we eat.

8. Answer the following questions in detail.

a. What is a neutralisation reaction? Explain with the help of an example.
Answer: The reaction between an acid and a base to form salt and water is known
as a neutralisation reaction.
Example: Acid + Base-- Salt + Water
HCl + NaOH- NaCl + H2O
b. Complete the following table.
Properties Example with Uses
Acids They have a sour taste. Acetic acid is used as

food additive, flavoring

and preservative.

Bases A base is bitter to taste Potassium hydroxide is

and soapy to touch. used for manufacturing

soft soaps for bathing.

10 . Practical based question:

An experiment was performed where 15 ml of dilute solution of sodium hydroxide
is taken in a conical flask. Hydrochloric acid is then added to the sodium
hydroxide solution.
Phenolphthalein is used as an indicator during the experiment.
a. Complete the following observation table

Solution Colour of Solution

Sodium hydroxide solution in the
Colourless
conical flask
Sodium hydroxide + hydrochloric
acid solution in the conical flask Pink
+ indicator (at the end of the

reaction)
a. Write the chemical equation of the reaction.
Answer: HCl + NaOH-- NaCl + H2O

11.Value based question

Ankush and his friend were playing in the garden. Ankush’s friend was
in extreme pain as he was stung by a bee. Ankush immediately applied a
paste of baking soda on the affected area.
a.What does a bee’s sting contain?
Answer: The bee’s sting contains formic acid.
b.Why did Ankush apply a paste of baking soda on the affected area?
Answer: Because applying the paste of baking soda will help in relieving pain as
baking soda being the base will neutralize the effect of acid.
c.What values were displayed by Ankush?
Answer: Ankush is a knowledgeable, caring and practical child.

12.HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills)

The working tables in a chemistry laboratory are generally
covered with tiles instead of wood or metal. Why?
Answer: Because chemistry labs contains various types of
chemicals which include acids and bases also, which are
corrosive in nature and can corrode wood or metal with time.
