BMS533 PRAC# 2 : Good Microbiological Practices (GMP)

Objective

To write set of GMPs for routine work in a BSL2 laboratory

Introduction
GMPs are central to any biorisk management programs. Most of you should have been taught
the basic GMP when you are first introduced to the Microbiology Lab. For this session, we will
attempt to write a set of GMP guidelines for routine work in a BSL2 laboratory, where microbes
that can cause infections are routinely handled. The purpose is for everyone to be on the same
page, as different lecturers may have taught you slightly different versions of GMPs. We will
do this by considering the 'correct' actions to take from the moment you want to enter the lab
to the point you leave the lab.

GOOD MICROBIOLOGICAL PRACTICES

Applicable for a BSL2 laboratory and handling of Risk Group 2 organisms and below.

A. BEFORE YOU ENTER THE LAB

a. DO
1. Leave all personnel belongings outside for instance bags and jackets.
2. Other things such as watches and jewellery must be taken off before entering the lab.
3. Wear closed-toed shoes and long pants to prevent the skin from exposure to the chemicals.

b. DO NOT
1. Do not bring in your mobile phone.
2. Do not wear loose sleeves, open-toed shoes, and contact lenses as they are impractical
when working.
3. Do not bring the food or drinks into the lab.

B. UPON ENTERING THE LAB

a. DO
1. Put on a lab coat and it should be worn with the sleeves rolled down.
2. Wear gloves and safety goggles to prevent the skin and eyes from exposure to the
chemicals.
3. Long hair needs to be tied up to prevent the hair from being burned while working with a
Bunsen burner.
b. DO NOT
1. Do not leave a long hair untied.
2. Not wearing lab coat, safety goggles, and gloves.

C. WORKING IN THE LAB

a. DO
1. Keep the workspace free of all unnecessary materials.
2. Disinfect work areas before use.
3. Read the precautions in the laboratory manual and follow the instructions exactly.
4. Handle the chemicals carefully and follow the warnings.
5. Handle hot glassware and apparatus carefully as hot glassware looks the same as cold
glassware.
6. Use glove when handling hazardous chemicals.
7. Label the test tubes clearly.
8. Report any spills, injuries, or accidents to the instructor immediately.
9. Clean up any broken glassware immediately and carefully and dispose the broken glassware
in the bin labelled ‘FOR BROKEN GLASS ONLY’.
10. Turn off the heating apparatus, gas valves and water faucets when not in use.
11. Wash hands immediately after in contact with allergens, pathogenic organism, or toxic
chemicals.

b. DO NOT
1. Do not distract and obstruct lab mates while conducting experiment.
2. Do not play with material and apparatus in the lab.
3. Do not touch, smell or do anything before you know what the chemical is.
4. Do not conduct an experiment without the assistance of a laboratory assistant.
5. Do not run in the laboratory.
6. Do not leave the experiment while in progress.
7. Do not eat or drink while working in the laboratory.
8. Do not sit on the laboratory benches.
