1. The following figure shows the speed-time graph of a car. The driver sees the emergency at time t = 0.
The total mass of the car is 800 kg.
a) Determine
i. 30m
the thinking distance ________________________________________________ (1)
ii. the braking distance ________________________________________________
60m (1)
iii. 7.5 m/s2
the deceleration of the car during braking _______________________________ (2)
iv. 6000N
the force provided by the brakes ______________________________________ (2)
b) Using ideas about friction and deceleration, state and explain how the braking distance is
affected by
i. using new tyres rather than badly worn tyres
Braking distance will decrease as there will be more friction on new tyres compare

to badly worn tyres. (2)
ii. the car skidding on a wet road
Braking distance will increase as there will be less friction on wet road.
______________________________________________________________________ (2)
iii. the car carrying a heavy load of passengers
Braking distance will increase as deceleration will decrease because mass will be

more and mass is inversely propotional to acceleration.
Electromotive force is a workdone on each unit of charge that passes through a cercuit.
_____________________________________________________________________________________ (2)
b) An 18 ohms resistor and a 30 ohms resistor are connected in series with the battery.
i. State the relationship between the current in both the resistors (I1 and I2) and the total current (I) in the circuit.
I1=I2=I
_____________________________________________________________________________ (2)
ii. State an equation that relates the e.m.f. E of the battery, the potential difference V1
across the 18 ohms resistor and the potential difference V2 across the 30 ohms resistor.
E=V1+V2
_____________________________________________________________________________________ (2)
c) The resistors are made from the same material, but have different cross-sectional areas and
different lengths.
State the relationship between
(i) the resistance R and the length l of a wire of constant cross-sectional area,
As length will increase resistance will also increase thus length is directly propotional to resistance.
_____________________________________________________________________________________ (2)
(ii) the resistance R and the cross-sectional area A of a wire of constant length.
As cross-sectional area will increase resistance will decrease thus cross-sectional area is inversely propotional to
resistance.
_____________________________________________________________________________________ (2)
d) We replace the battery by two parallel connected cells of 12V each as shown below
3. The given figure is a graph od current against potential difference (p.d.) for a length of metal wire.
a) The metal wire obeys Ohm’s law. State Ohm’s law in words.
Ohm's law states that current passing through every metallic conductor is directly propotional
________________________________________________________________________________
to the potential difference across it under curtain conditions being constant such as temperature.
________________________________________________________________________________ (2)
b) Calculate the resistance of the metal wire.
20 ohms
resistance = _________________ (2)
c) A new wire is made from the same metal as the original wire. The two wires have the same length. The cross-
sectional area of the new wire is half that of the original wire.
i. Calculate the resistance of the new wire.
40 ohms
resistance = __________________ (3)
ii. On gragh draw a line to show how current varies with p.d. for the new wire. (2)
line should pass through these points:
(0.025A,1V) , (0.05A,2V) , (0.075A,3V) , (0.1A,4V) , (0.125A,5V)
