CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In recent years, numerous higher education institutions have experienced changes and
carrying out initiatives that, based on Information Technologies and Communication (ICT), aim to
promote that students develop knowledge rigorous scientists, integrated and applied in their
professional performance, in addition to foster in them the ability to be autonomous and self-managed
learners, as well as participate in the consolidation of critical, reflective, creative and responsible
citizens (Monereo, 2013; UNESCO, 2014).
The foregoing highlights what González, Padilla and Rincón (2012) and more recently Aguaded and
Cabero Almenara (2014) in relation to the fact that one of the that are currently being presented,
mainly in the field of training digital, is to carry out pedagogical actions that combine traditional
training with non- face-to-face or online, called blended learning or also known as modality mixed,
which are developed with the support of platforms and networks, thus opening way new horizons and
causing learning to be increasingly universal, since it breaks the limits of time and space.

Mandy yang dong (2013) Blended learning ,Which aims to combine the advantage of the both
the traditional face to face instruction and learning has recently become popular in higher education,
gaining a better understanding on student's perceptions of blended learning across different groups
of students based their social and demographical traits brush(2008) face to face instruction offer less
flexibility on students typically need learning process ,in which students typically need to conduct and
perform class activities and task together based on the same schedule , no matter what their
background or prion levels of course topical knowledge .
Noffsinger (1938) suggested that the program was fairly appropriate to address the
fundamental problems experienced in distance learning such as lack of face-to-face interaction.
What’s more, blended learning offers a solution to the space and time limitations of face-to-face
lessons (Graham, 2006). In This regard, Blended learning can be needed as an eclectic model built
on the minimization of the negative aspects of online and face-to-face learning environments and the
convergence of the advantages of both approaches (Finn & Bucceri, 2004; Graham,
2006;Harding,Kaczynski, & Wood,2005; Whitelock & Jelfs, 2003; Williams, Bland, & Christie, 2008).
In blended learning, the student attends some part of the course in a place outside the house and
accompanied by an instructor while the rest is self-learning at his/her own pace through electronic,
online or other means (e.g. learning management systems) at any time and place
(Horn&Staker,2011;Staker,2011) .
Lim & Morris (2009) listed four important components in a blended course design as the nature of
learning activity, the characteristics of the teacher, the workload and learning support.

Significance of the Study

The study provides some insights into the complexities of the blending process in attempting
to incorporate new technology into current teaching situations, and in trying to identify practical
directions to take in advancing the process of technological teaching. The perception of this study are
significant because of the failure of designated modes of access to achieve the expected outcomes
in a senior undergraduate course.
This study will give knowledge to everyone of what the students feel and reaction towards to the new
normal class that is implemented this S.Y 2020-2021. This study entitled "The Perception of Grade 12
STEM 1A students towards to Blended Learning in Arellano University - Elisa Esguerra Campus S.Y
2020-2021" is citing the importance of this study. The result of the study will be great benefit to the
following:

To the Students
- This study is helpful to the respondents because it gives new information about the emotions or
reaction of the students towards the blended learning. And this study makes the students understand
of what other students feels about the new normal class.
To the Teachers
- This study will help the teachers on how to respond to the students in blended learning because
they will know how their students overcoming the new normal class. Especially when the students are
struggling in passing the requirements those teachers needed.
To the Parents
- This study will help the parents to know what their child is going through. For them to avoid their
children to have depression or anxiety that makes them want to die or do suicide. It helps every
parent to realize how communication is important in this period of time.
To the Researchers
- This study helps the researcher to gain new information and experiences regarding to the senior
high school students that going through the new normal or blended learning. Therefore the
researcher will understand the struggles of the senior high school students in this new normal. And
also for The Future Researcher that will conduct a study that connected to this Topic
Scope and Delimitation
This study is conducted to determine the academic performance of the students even they are
in distance learning. The study of Blended learning can enable students to become active learners
through reasoning and concept application and also allow increased student interaction with peers
and instructors. This study is primarily focused on how the students adopt and what is their emotion
on blended learning. The study will be conducted from the first quarter to the second quarter of the
first semester. The researchers aim is to get the Perception of the students about their blended
learning of OLS (Online Learning System).
The researchers aim is to give ideas how the students taking care of their studies in new
normal class. What we want to achieve in our research is to provide information about blended
learning so that students can better understand it. The researchers will be having a respondent that is
from section 1A Grade 12 Senior High School STEM strand of Arellano University - Malabon Elisa
Esguerra Campus. This study will be limited only in studying the preferences of the students regarding
to the new normal class and how it affects in their physical and mental health of the chosen
respondents of Arellano University - Malabon Elisa Esguerra Campus
Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to identify and examine the perception of Grade 12 student
from STEM 1A in Arellano University EEC towards the Blended Learning. This study will analyze the
situation of the students that is going through online classes. As the coronavirus (COVID-19)
pandemic rapidly spread across the country, schools have shut their doors and classes have moved
online in order to slow the spread. The transition to online learning has impacted not only teachers,
who have had to amend their courses, but also students who have had to adjust to a new learning
environment.
This study aims to determine the Perception of Grade 12 STEM 1A students towards Blended
Learning in Areallano University -Elisa Esguerra Campus. The research seeks to answer the
following question:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Name (Optional)
1.2 Age
1.3 Gender
2. What are STEM 1-A students perceptions of their use of time in blended learning? in terms
of:
2.1 Internet Access
2.2 Communication
2.3 Instruction Materials
2. 4 Teaching Strategies
3. Does STEM 1-A perceived blended learning as positive or negative?
II. Methodology

A. Research Design
The researcher used Quantitative Research as a research design. This will be accomplished
through the use of Descriptive Survey. This will be done through the use of the Descriptive Survey.
This study focuses only on the perception of respondents about the online classes.

B. Population and Sampling

In selecting the respondent, the researcher uses Clustered Sampling Technique. The Chosen
Population is students in Arellano University Elisa Esguerra Campus. The researcher will randomly
selecting 40 students from Grade 12 STEM 1A

C. Research Instrument
The researcher specifically uses the Likert Scale survey questionnaire. A likert scale is a type
of data collection method used to collect, analyze and interpret the different point of view or
perspective of the respondent. The respondents will reply to the questions using the 5-point scale
agreement. The questions are used by the statement and the respondents will indicate how much
they agree or disagree with the statement.

D. Statistical Treatment of Data

The responses of the STEM students are statistically analyzed in accordance to the needs of
the study. The answers from the Likert Scale survey questionnaire are considered as Frequency,
Approval, and Agreement
The researcher use percentage of distribution that has frequency and total number of
students.
Formula: % =f/N x 100
Where:
% = Percentage
f = Frequency
N = Total number of respondents

The respondents state their names. The respondents’ age ranges from 17 – 20 years old. Most
of the respondents are male and the minority are female. The student are from Grade 12 STEM 1-A .

2. What are STEM 1-A students perceptions of their use of time in blended learning? in terms
of:
2.1 Internet Access
There are 22 respondents which is equivalent to 55% that are able to comply all the activities
with the help of internet acces same with the 13 respondent that is equivalent to 32%, in the other
hand there are 4 respondent that is equivalent to 10% somewhat are unable to comply all the
activities and the remaining is 3% which is one respondent that is unable to comply all the activities
due to internet access.
2.2 Communication
There is 18 respondent which is equivalent to 45% and 16 respondent which is equivalent to
40% they were able to communicate well with their teacher as long of having internet connection,
On the other hand there were 4 respondent which is equal to 10 % somewhat they can
communicate with their teachers while the remaining is 5% which is only 2 respondents that are
unable to communicate well with their teacheration

2.3 Instruction Materials

There is 15% total of 6 respondent that are able to understand the different instruction
materials that given by their teachers same with the 24 respondent that is equivalent to 60% in total,
On the other hand there is 7 respondent which is equal to 17% somewhat they were able to
understand the instruction material given by their teacher and 2 respondent which 5% somewhat
unable to understand the instruction material given by their teacher and lastly 1 responent which is
equal to 3% that unable to understand the institution materials.

2. 4 Teaching Strategies
There are 6 respondent which is equal to 16% are capable to understand the lesson easily
because of the teaching strategies that their teacher have, same with the 17 respondent which is
equal to 42.5%, Then the 14 respondent which is equivalent to 35% are somewhat they can
understand the lesson of the easily because of the teaching strategies that their teacher have. On
the other hand there is only 1 response in total of 2.5% somewhat that it can’t understand the
lesson easily. Lastly the remaining 5% which is equal to 2 respondent that are incapable to
understand the lesson easily because of the teaching strategies that their teacher have.

3. Does STEM 1-A perceived blended learning as positive or negative?

Base on the result the blended learning has positive impact for the students of STEM 1A the
perception of each of them are gathered and being sorted in data gathering and being analyzed
according from what they’red answer.
Conclusion

 The findings of learners’perceptions would be more revealing if learners’ performances had

been taken into internet access. The study demonstrated what learners believed instead of
what they achieved in the blended learning environment. The ultimate purpose for this is to
create a new learning system where different modes can be best integrated so that Good
quality of internet access can learn more efficiently and effectively.
 By all counts based on our research, the common problems of the respondents students is the
internet connection and connection of this new normal education.
 The finding shows the age and gender of the respondent. The highest number of respondent
has the age ranging from 17- 20 years and most of them are males
 In the context of blended learning, the focus of this research is to present a causal model,
based on a theoretical framework, which describes the relationships concerning motivations,
emotions, cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies, and learning strategies, and their
impact on learning performance. The results suggest that negative emotions play a meaningful
role between expectancy (a component of motivation) and learning strategies.
 The teacher’s teaching and strategy are the same taught to the student but the student does
not have the same understanding of what is taught the others understand and the others some
what and the others not really understand and it depends on the teacher’s approach how it is
will be taught them.
 The finding give a positive feedback toward the blended learning that is implented this school
year 2020-2021
Recommendation
The conclusion recognizes that not all the respondents are not same situation with this new
normal education. The researcher’s deep analysis resulted in the recommendations.

To the students
 Practice time management and don’t be shy to talk to your teachers to inform them
what you are struggling with the new normal education.
 It prepare student for their future by enhance their skills of research, self- learning, self-
engagement, decision making, computer literacy.
To the teachers
 The teachers will understand the situation of the other students that not all the students
is can easily keep up with the new normal
 Completing online learning activities can be a great way to prepare learners for face-to-
face sessions and introduce them to content that they’ll be covering in class.
To the Parents
 The teachers will be able to understand well their students as they know what are the
reasons or problems that their students experiencing with the new normal education.
To the Future Researcher
 The future researchers will acquire more skills and understanding of what they are co
students experiencing this new normal education. And through this the researchers will
be able to help other students to improve their communication even they are not seeing
each other.
