merely because you are physically present; your tutor must also judge that your participation has been satisfactory.

PASS Groups
PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) is an academic mentoring program where experienced senior students are available to help you with MATH141. In a one hour PASS session each week you can learn strategies and concepts that will save you many hours struggling at home on your own. You will also get a chance to learn more deeply in this subject, which will form the foundation for many of your later-year subjects. Many students struggle each year with this subject, and PASS has a strong record of helping those students to get through the subject. In Autumn 2008 regularly attending PASS students scored 12 marks higher than students who did not attend PASS for MATH141. Results from Autumn 2008 also show that students who did not attend PASS were more than three times as likely to fail. For more information about PASS visit the website: http://www.uow.edu.au/student/services/pass Participation in a PASS group is compulsory for Opportunity students in MATH141. The program is highly recommended for all other students.

Lectures
Lectures for MATH141 are Mondays 13.30 15.30 in Room 40.153 Wednesdays 8.30 9.30 in Room 40.153 You are required to attend all lectures in MATH141. Attendance will be monitored by a sign-on sheet that will be circulated each lecture. Experience has shown that poor attendance at lectures leads to poor performance in this subject.

Tutorials & Workshops

If you havent already, you must enrol in a one-hour compulsory tutorial and a one-hour compulsory workshop via SOLS. Enrolments opened at 12.02am on Monday, 16 February 2009 and will close at 8.00am on Saturday, 7 March 2009. After this cut-off date, if you haven't chosen your classes you will automatically be allocated to a tutorial and workshop. If you have compelling reasons to change your tutorial or workshop after the cut-off date, you must put in a written request via email to Annie Harper ([email protected]) stating your name and reasons for change and including a copy of your timetable. Such requests may be made in Week 2 only and changes will be made where class sizes allow. Notes: If you are a new student within the Faculty of Engineering, you were enrolled in a tutorial and workshop at the time assigned to you by staff at Enrolments. You should confirm your times via SOLS. You may change your tutorial or workshop allocation subject to available space. If you wish to change your tutorial allocation and you have been designated as an Engineering Opportunity Student, please make sure you choose from the MATH141 Opportunity tutorials. If you are NOT an Opportunity student, please make sure you choose from the non-Opportunity MATH141 tutorials. Failure to choose the correct class will result in you being removed by the subject coordinator and allocated to the correct type of tutorial class wherever space is available. You must attend the tutorial and workshop at the time listed for you on SOLS. Tutorials and Workshops will begin in Week 2. During tutorials you will be working individually, practicing material that is covered in lectures and workshops. During workshops you will be working in groups, learning new material or completing engineering problems that apply the subject material. The workshop groups will be determined in your first workshop in Week 2. Attendance at tutorials and workshops is compulsory. A record of attendance and your performance at those classes will be kept and may be taken into account in determining your final grade if you are on a borderline. You will not be counted as having attended a class

Extra Tutorial Assistance

Optional extra tutorial assistance, commencing in Week 2 of session, and separate from the compulsory tutorial classes, will be available at times listed on the MATH141 eLearning site. The purpose of this assistance is to give additional personal assistance with problems and lecture material. If there are parts of the lectures, or problems done in tutorials, which you dont understand, then you may come to the Tutorial Assistance times and ask about them. The optional tutorials are not a substitute for the compulsory tutorials.

Assessment
Your final mark in MATH141 will be determined as follows*: Individual assignments 10% In-Class Group Tasks 10% Group Assignment 10% Examinations 70% Total 100% *Attendance at tutorials, workshops and lectures may be taken into account. Scaling of marks is not a standard procedure in this subject. Note that you are not required to pass each individual component to receive a Pass grade in MATH141. However, you would seriously jeopardize your chances of passing this subject if you do not aim to be successful in every component of the assessment.

Examinations
The examination component of MATH141 will be comprised of the following In-Session Examination 1 Date: Saturday, 2 May 2009 (end of Week 8) Time: 9.00 Location: Building 20 Duration: 100 minutes Topics: All material covered in Weeks 1-6 Value: 35% Results for Exam 1 will be available on SOLS by Friday, 8 May 2009 (Week 9).
Note that if you are unable to attend In-Session Exam 1, you should contact the subject coordinator immediately.

Group Assignment
In the workshop of Week 2, your group will be given a research task to be completed outside class time. Submission will be in the form of a 5-minute group presentation in your workshop of Week 13. You will be assessed immediately, according to a strict set of guidelines that you will receive with your task. This assignment will contribute a total of 10% towards your final mark in MATH141, calculated as follows. 5% for your tutors assessment of your presentation; 2.5% for other workshop members assessment of your presentation; 2.5% determined by your group members assessment of your contribution to the task. Your presentation must use high quality visual aids and you must reference your material appropriately (see http://www.library.uow.edu.au/resourcesbytopic/ UOW026621.html for some details). While every member must attend the workshop on the day of the presentation, not every member of your group needs to speak. If you are absent on the day of the presentation, you must apply for student academic consideration via SOLS and submit your documentation to Student Central for verification within three (3) days of your workshop. Failure to do so will result in a 0 mark for this assessment task. The outcome of any application for student academic consideration will be dependent on your groups assessment of your contribution to the task, on your performance in all other tasks and on your attendance at all other classes in MATH141.

In-Session Examination 2 Date: Monday, 1 June 2009 (Week 13) Time: 13.30 Location: 40.153 Duration: 100 minutes Topics: All material covered in Weeks 7-12 Value: 35% Results for Exam 2 will be available on SOLS by Tuesday, 9 June 2009 (Stuvac). Final Examination This examination will be held during the formal examination period in June 2009 at a time to be advised by the University. Duration: 195 minutes Topics: Part A Material from Weeks 1-6 Part B Material from Weeks 7-12 Value: 70% (35% each part) Examination Result Your examination result for MATH141 will be calculated by adding the following two results: (i) The best score between In-Session Exam 1 and Final Exam Part A 35% (ii) The best score between In-Session Exam 2 and Final Exam Part B 35% Total: 70%

In-Class Group Tasks

In the workshops of Weeks 3 to 12 inclusive, you will be given a group worksheet from which your group will be required to complete a particular question. Each member of the group must have a complete written solution to the question by the last 10 minutes of the class. This solution will be checked immediately and your result recorded. Further, in one class your group will be required to present the correct solution during the final 10 minutes of the workshop. The solutions and presentation will contribute a total of 10% towards your final mark in MATH141, calculated as follows. 5% for clarity, correctness and completeness of the weekly solutions; 2.5% for the class presentation of one solution; 2.5% for your group members assessment of your contribution to the solutions throughout the session. Further details will be explained in your first workshop in Week 2. If you wish to seek student academic consideration for missing a workshop, you must apply for academic consideration via SOLS and submit your documentation to Student Central for verification within three (3) days of your workshop. The outcome of your application will depend on the number of workshops you have missed and your performance in other aspects of the subject.

Notes: If you deem your results from In-Session Examinations 1 and 2 to be satisfactory, you are not required to sit for the Final Examination. On the other hand, if you are satisfied with one of the In-Session Examinations and not with the other, you may sit for the Final Examination and take the full time to complete the required half of the exam to improve your result. If you are not satisfied with either In-Session Examination result, you should sit for the Final Examination and complete the entire paper. Although the In-Session Examinations and the Final Examination cover the same material, the questions themselves will be different.

Calculators & Summary Sheets

Please note that single-line-display calculators are permitted in examinations for this subject. They must not have graphics capabilities, alphanumeric keyboards (or capabilities) and they must not be programmable in any way. If you are not sure whether your calculator is acceptable, have it checked well before any exam. Note that a one-page, A4-sized, single-sided summary sheet is permitted in both In-Session Examinations, and a one-page, A4-sized, double-sided summary sheet is permitted in the Final Examination for this subject.

Individual Assignments
In the tutorials of Weeks 4 & 9, you will be given an assignment. The assignments must be handed in at your tutorial in the following week, that is, in Weeks 5 & 10 respectively. You must attend your tutorial for the assignment to be assessed. Assignments will be marked during the ensuing week and returned one week after submission in tutorials. The assignments will contribute a total of 10% (5% each) towards your

final mark in MATH141. Note: Those students designated as Engineering Opportunity Students will be given an assignment in Weeks 4, 6, 9 and 11, due the following week and returned one week after submission. These assignments will still only contribute a total of 10% (2.5% each) towards your final mark in MATH141. Grades: 3, 4, 5 are considered satisfactory marks (a reasonable attempt at the problems) 0, 1, 2 are considered unsatisfactory (more work is needed to succeed) You must show working for each question on the assignment. Untidy or illegible work will not be assessed, and will be graded poorly. Assignments will not be accepted outside your regularly scheduled tutorial or after the due date unless you are successful in applying for student academic consideration. Assignments must be submitted with the assignment sheet used as a cover sheet and you should make sure your receipt is initialed by your tutor. Faxed or emailed assignments will not be accepted. You must submit your assignment in person. Assignments are only part of the expected workload and have the primary purpose of giving you feedback on your progress and understanding of the work. You should keep a copy of all work submitted. If you wish to seek student academic consideration for a late assignment (because you missed a tutorial) you must apply for academic consideration via SOLS and submit your documentation to Student Central for verification within three (3) days of the due date of the assignment. Next, you should obtain a Late Assignment Form from the School Admin Assistant

(Room 15.110) and submit the assignment with the completed form to the Admin Assistant as early as possible. In any case, assignments submitted more than 4 working days after the original due date will not be accepted and other arrangements may be necessary. In this instance, contact the subject coordinator immediately.

Cheating and Plagiarism

The University does not tolerate cheating nor plagiarism and regards them very seriously. For more information, see the document Policies and Services of the University, Faculty and School and the section in the University Undergraduate Handbook entitled Acknowledgement Practice/Plagiarism, or visit http://www.uow.edu.au/handbook/ courserules/plagiarism.html

Consultation
If you are having difficulty with MATH141, you are encouraged to seek advice from your lecturers or the subject coordinator (most tutors are casual staff and therefore are not available for consultation). For administrative matters, you should see the subject coordinator. If you cannot come at the listed consultation times, contact the subject coordinator to arrange an appointment at a mutually convenient time. When you send an email to a lecturer or the subject coordinator, you should do so from your University email account. Email sent from other accounts may be automatically redirected into a junk-mail folder; the staff member may then not read it for several days, or it may be automatically deleted before it is read at all. Furthermore, the subject line of your email should refer to MATH141.

If you are having any difficulty with MATH141, you should seek advice before it is too late.
