    The Clinical Global Impressions (CGI) scale is used to rate the severity of a patient's illness, their overall improvement, and the efficacy of treatment. It contains 4 items: 1) Severity of Illness is rated on a 1 to 7 scale considering the patient's illness severity compared to others with the same condition, 2) Global Improvement is rated on a 1 to 7 scale comparing the patient's current condition to their admission, 3) Efficacy Index rates therapeutic effects and side effects on a grid to determine if effects outweigh side effects, and 4) lists descriptors for levels of therapeutic effect from marked to unchanged/worse.
