CYLINDER
CYLINDER
CYLINDER is a closed solid that has two parallel (usually circular bases connected by a curved surface.
If we slice a cylinder parallel to its base, then each cross-section is a circle of the same size as the base.
Sample Problem
1. Calculate the volume, Lateral Area, and total Area of a cylinder whose radius of the base is 14cm and
the height is 10cm. Use = 3.14.
Solution:
Given: r= 14 cm h= 10 cm
Solve for the volume
2
V =π r h
V= (3.14) (14 cm)2 (10 cm)
V= (3.14) (196 cm2) (10 cm)
V = 6154.4 cm3
Solve for lateral area
LA =2 πrh
LA = 2 (3.14) (14 cm) (10 cm)
LA = 879.2 cm2
Solve for Total Area
TA=2 πr (h+ r )
TA = 2 (3.14) (14 cm) (10 cm + 14 cm)
TA = 2 (3.14) (14 cm) (24 cm)
TA = 2110.08 cm2
2. Given a cylinder with a volume of 502.4 in3 and a radius of 4 in, find its height. Use = 3.14.
Solution:
Given: r = 4 in V = 502.4 in3 h=?
Using the formula for volume of cylinder, solve for height
2
V =π r h
502.4 in3 = (3.14) (4 in)2 h
502.4 in3 = (3.14) (16 in2) h
502.4 in3 = (50.24 in2) h
502.4 ¿ ( 50.24 ¿ ) h
3 2
2
= 2
50.24 ¿ 50.24 ¿
10 in =h
The height of the cylinder is 10 inches.
3. Four huge cubes of ice were put in a cylindrical glass with an internal diameter of 5 m. The edge of each
cube measures 1.5 m. How high is the water level inside the glass after the four ice cubes melted? Use =
3.14
Solution:
Given: There is 4 cube with edge of 1.5 m
The diameter of the cube is 5 m, then the radius is 2.5 m.
We need to solve first for the volume of the cube.
V = e3
V = (1.5 m)3
V = 3.375 m3
Since there are 4 cubes of ice, and once it melted it will be the volume of the cylinder glass
Volume of cylindrical glass = 4 (volume of cube of ice)
= 4 (3.375 m3)
= 13.5 m3
2
V =π r h
13.5 m3 = (3.14) (2.5m)2 (h)
13.5 m3 = (3.14) (6.25 m2) (h)
13.5 m3 = (19.625 m2) h
13.5m3 19.625m2 h
=
19.625m2 19.625m2
0.69 m = h
The water in the cylindrical glass is 0.69 m.
