Project Title : A Simulation of Conveyor System with Gear Motor.

Supervisor(s): Dr. Handy bin Ali Munir

1. Introduction:

The conveyor system with gear motor is a typical energy conversion system from
electrical energy to mechanical energy. Nowadays, conveyor’s market is increasing
rapidly moreover during this pandemic period. The world of intralogistics is going
through a major transformation. Manufacturing facilities have been working around the
clock to provide the end products, which would not have been possible without the use of
conveyors and other machines. As the demand of conveyor rapidly increased, the price
will be increased too. Thus, had to face financial issues.

Therefore, the conveyor system with gear motor needed to be used to its
maximum capability. The system can be simulated to control the direction of the
conveyor which can be resulted to become a bi-directional operation system. This
reversible gear motor is ideal choice for applications where the rotational direction
changes. It uses upper level controller such as PLC or HMI to operate it. It can conclude
that, simulation of conveyor system with gear motor is a great method to give superb
efficiency during future operation.

2. Problem Statement, Scope and Objective:

a) Problem Statement

Simulation of conveyor system in computer helps engineers design better

tracking operation. Besides, it can also help engineers to design the conveyor track
suitable for the size of warehouse needed. Just as important as hardware, simulation
in computer can help solve real problems. It also shows the future outcomes and
understand on how to manipulate the characteristics that influence the possibilities.
Other than that, engineers must know on how to handle operation of conveyors with
the least number of conveyor possible. By solving this issue, gear motor needed to

run in both directions to reduce the installation of excessive

conveyors. This will save up cost thus reduce the maintenance work also. These are
the problems that need to be encountered during completing this project.

 Space optimization.
 PLC Configuration for the gear motor to run in both directions.
 Keeping associates profitable by saving up cost.
 Mistracking of the operation.

b) Objective(s)
 To identify a flexible design for the conveyor system.
 To analyze the possibility of the future outcomes of the system by
simulation.
 To develop a simple application with improvements to the production
process.

c) Scope(s)
 Utilization of simulation software for the design of conveyor system and
future outcomes.
 Develop a bi-directional operation system by applying engineering
knowledge.
 Applicable to be operate in production industry.

3. Background/ Literature Review:

The market of conveyor was valued at USD7.73 billion in 2019 and expected to
reach USD 10.07 billion by 2025. It is influenced by different reasons, modernization of
industry, industrial growth, production and more. But one of the most obvious factors are
caused by the spread of COVID-19, it has positively affected the market especially in
Food & Beverage and Pharmaceuticals sector. Due to higher demands in this market,
these companies need to invest in conveyors and machines to increase the pace of their
production.

Conveyors system are used widely across due to numerous benefits they provide.
Not just the conveyor is safe to use, thus able to safely transport materials from one
location to another, which human labor can achieve but it will be costly. It also can be
installed anywhere suitable and can be controlled to achieve fully systematic operation.
Engineers are responsible to make sure the conveyor system worked efficiently and
maintaining its reliability.

As computer hardware continues to advance, simulators will become common in

the design process. Simulation of conveyor can be done to help engineer in solving issues
such as mistracking, blockage and design of the system. Computer software do helps in
controlling/changing the direction of conveyor and design overview model of the system.
