Background
● The batik market in Malaysia comprises distributors, manufacturers, and designers, with the pembatik, or
traditional batik producers, playing a vital role in the industry.
● Allayarham Awang bin Ahmad, the original proprietor of the business, established Syarikat Dagang
Batikraf in the 1970s in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
● Following the passing of Awang Ahmad in 1997, his son, Muhammad Ariff Fadhilah bin Awang, took over
the business at the age of 19 and continued its operations under the name Syarikat Dagang Batikraf.
● Muhammad Ariff Fadhilah's passion for batik led him to study at Samasa Batik Sdn Bhd, where he gained
valuable experience in the industry, eventually establishing his own successful business. His inherited son
continues to carry on the family business today.
Introduction
Wastewater Sources
● Malaysian batik is renowned for its originality and is highly sought after both domestically and
internationally. However, the production process of batik results in wastewater that contributes to water
pollution issues, particularly in Kelantan and Terengganu.
● The effluents from batik factories contain harmful substances such as heavy metals, organic and inorganic
dyes, and suspended particles, posing a significant environmental threat.
● The batik production process involves the use of various chemicals and generates contaminated effluents
during washing, stabilizing, soaking, boiling, and rinsing of fabrics. These effluents exhibit alkaline
characteristics, pigmentation, and high temperatures.
● The complex chemical structure of the dyes used in batik makes them resistant to fading and biodegradation,
necessitating the use of dye-fixing agents. However, the use of such agents can lead to an increase in toxicants
in the discharged wastewater, exacerbating the environmental impact of batik production.
Introduction
Wastewater Characteristics
● Syarikat Dagang Batikraf's batik production generates wastewater with a pH level of 11.8, exceeding the
standard range of 5.5-9.0. This alkaline state hinders the effectiveness of bacteria and enzymes in wastewater
treatment processes.
● The batik effluent from Syarikat Dagang Batikraf exhibits a higher chemical oxygen demand (COD) range of
2500-3000, surpassing the standard value of 200. Elevated COD levels indicate a decrease in dissolved oxygen
content and an increase in oxidizable organic materials, posing a threat to aquatic life.
● The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of the batik effluent falls within the range of 1000-2000, higher than
the standard value of 50. High BOD levels result in lower oxygen levels in receiving water bodies, which can
lead to the death of various species.
● Syarikat Dagang Batikraf's batik effluent contains total suspended solids (TSS) in the range of 200-500,
exceeding the benchmark value of 100. This high TSS concentration contributes to the contamination of water
with bacteria, nutrients, pesticides, and metals, impacting aquatic vegetation and reducing dissolved oxygen
content.
