Q.1 What is meant by deforestation? What are the causes of deforestation?

Ans: 1 The clearing of forests by cutting down trees over a wide area is called deforestation. The various

c. Deforestation causes soil erosion and desertification.
d. Deforestation affects the water cycle leading to decrease in rainfall. The decrease in rainfall lowers the
ground water level and causes droughts.
e. Deforestation leads to the extinction of many wild animals and plants.

Q.3 Define the following:

a. Biosphere Reserve
b. National Park
c. Wild life sanctuary.
d. Flora and Fauna.
Ans: 3 a. Biosphere Reserve: A biosphere reserve is a large protected area of land meant for the conservation
of wildlife, biodiversity and traditional lifestyle of the tribal people living in the area. The tribal people are an
integral part of it.
b. National Park: A National Park is a relatively large area of scenic beauty protected and maintained
by the government to preserve plants and animals, landscape and historic objects of the area and places of
scientific research.
c. Wild Life Sanctuary: A wild life Sanctuary is a protected area which protects and preserves the wild
animals in their natural environment.
d. Flora and Fauna: The plants and animals of a particular area are called the flora and fauna of that

Q.4 What are endemic species? Name two plant and two animal species which are endemic to Pachmarhi
Biosphere Reserve area.
Ans: 4 Endemic Species are those species which are found exclusively in a particular area. Endemic species
are not found naturally anywhere else. Two plant species of Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve are Sal and Wild
Mango and animal species are giant squirrel, flying squirrel and bison.

Q.5 What is Red Data Book?

Ans: 5 Red data book is a book which keeps a record of all endangered species of plants and animals. Red
Data book is being maintained by many countries and provide threat status of various species so that timely
remedial steps can be taken by the authorities concerned to prevent their extinction. Some of the endangered
species of animals listed in Red Data Book are Flying squirrel, Indian giant squirrel, Black buck, snow
leopard, Great Indian rhinoceros and tiger.

Q.6 What is migration? Name one migratory bird which comes to warmer regions of India every year?
Ans: 6The process of a bird moving from one place to another according to the season is called migration.
Migration of birds or animals is an adaptation to escape the harsh and cold conditions of their normal habitat
in winter so as to survive. The migratory bird which comes to India every year is Siberian crane.

Q.7 Explain how, recycling of paper helps in conservation of forests.

Ans: 7 Paper is made from wood pulp that is produced from the wood of forest trees It has been estimated that
17 full grown trees are needed to make 1 tonne of paper. The term recycling of paper means to process waste
paper so that it can be used again. If all of us keep collecting old newspapers, magazines, books etc and send
them for recycling, we will be able to save many forest trees from being cut down. We should save paper,
reuse paper and recycle paper. By doing this we will not only save trees but also save energy and water
needed for manufacturing paper.
