Writing a paragraph

A paragraph is a group of sentences related to one topic or developing one single point. A
paragraph may stand independently, that is, it may be a short composition complete in itself,
or it may be a part of a longer composition like an essay or a scientific article.

How do we write a paragraph?

5 Tips for Structuring and Writing Better Paragraphs

1. Make the first sentence of your topic sentence. ...

2. Provide support via the middle sentences. ...

3. Make your last sentence a conclusion or transition. ...

4. Know when to start a new paragraph. ...

5. Use transition words.

Each paragraph should have the following parts:

Topic Sentence

It introduces the main idea of the paragraph, telling

the reader what the paragraph is going to be about. It
also helps you keep your writing under control
narrowing your topic.

Supporting Sentences middle sentences

They are the supporting details that expand the idea

stated in your topic sentence. So, here is where you
give explanations, examples, statistics, etc.

Concluding Sentence or transition sentence

The closing sentence is the last sentence in a

paragraph. It restates the main idea of your paragraph

but gives the reader a sense of closure of the topic. It should succinctly end the paragraph and
transition to the next paragraph, if appropriate.

Besides, there are different types of paragraph that can be identified according the content
they develop. They can be cause-effect, comparative, description: physical, process, function.
Paragraphs, Comparison or contrast etc.

What is its purpose?

The purpose of a paragraph is to express a speaker’s thoughts on a particular point in a clear
way that is unique and specific to that paragraph. In other words, paragraphs shouldn’t be
mixing thoughts or ideas. When a new idea is introduced, generally, a writer will introduce a
new paragraph

2
What are the essential characteristics of a good paragraph?
Unity

It is the very bog factor that can make your paragraph

the worst or the best. The reason is quite obvious
because the whole paragraph represents a single sense
or thought. That is why all the sentences should be
dependent on each other. All the sentences should be
related to the main point of the paragraph.
Order

These should be a specific order in between the

sentences. To represent the main idea, all the sentences should follow a specific step by step
order. Students make this mistake in most cases because they start their paragraph very well
but after that they never write their sentences in order. Important things and other things
should be in order.

Content length

I have seen many students who like to write more and more. It is a good habit but excess of
anything is bad. No one likes to read long paragraphs because it wastes so much time. A good
paragraph is that have proper length of the content and that should be to the point.

Coherence

Coherence means relativity between the sentences. All the sentences of paragraph should
relate to each other. If one sentence is telling about something then other sentences must be
related to it. If the paragraph lacks coherence then it will not produce any sense or it will
become senseless.

Binding

It is the best characteristics among all given above as far as I am concern about writing. IF
your writing does not bind your readers then it is of no use. Readers should feel like they
are reading something very interesting. From the starting point to the end point, reader’s
interest should be in the paragraph.

Opening Sentences

Last but not the least is opening sentences. Your opening sentences should like that represent
the main idea of the paragraph. Rest of the sentences should be just explaining what you said
in the opening sentences.
