Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Health 6-Self-Learning Module on Consumer Health!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and


independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them

Consumer Health
It refers to the decisions you make about the purchase of product and use
of health information and services that will have direct effect on your
health.

Importance of Consumer Health


• It helps one property choose the best from among the consumer
goods and services available.

• It protects the public against the risks of injury associated with


consumer products.

• It helps consumers to be aware of their rights and responsibilities.

COMPONENTS of Consumer Health


● Health Information

Is the date facts you got from media and people including the
professionals and agencies.
● Health Products

Are those substances, materials or


equipment prepared or manufactured for
you to buy and use in the maintenance of
health and the treatment of diseases.
Example is food, eyeglasses, medicines,
cosmetics, cars, appliances and others.

● Health Services

Refers to health information, actions, procedures or work furnished,


or supplied to help satisfy your needs and wants as a consumer. These are
services and things people do to and for other people. Example of health
services are medical consultation and treatment, using the telephone, using
the electricity, and payment for transportation, payment for haircut,
payment for news papers and your favorite magazines and comics.

Consumer Health Education


Is the process of assisting you to acquire the correct information and
understanding so that you will be able to make wise decision about a certain
health item.

Advantages of Consumer Education


• Consumer education helps a person make proper purchases. It aids
the consumer to make the right decision.

• Consumer education familiarizes consumers with the problems he


might face while making the purchase.

• Consumer education provides a full information of marketing


conditions, like the various sources of purchasing a particular
commodity, where to get cheaper but quality goods, shops, providing
additional facilities, and the latest products.

• Consumer education familiarizes consumers with various


standardizations and their markings.

• Consumer education familiarizes consumers about the various acts


enacted by the government.

Consumer education helps consumers get maximum satisfaction and


proper utilization for his money that leads to better living standards.
Consumer awareness is a term used to describe the awareness of
potential or current buyer about a
particular product or company. It plays
a key role in consumer decision-
making. It also increases the potential
customers’ knowledge about a product,
service or business.
