Answers
(1) 900
Step 1
According to the question, in the school 47% students are boys and we have to find the total
number of students in the school.
Let the total number of students be x.
Total number of girls = (100 - 47) = 53%
Difference between their percentages = 6%
Step 2
6% or 54 boys are less than girls.
Now 6% of x is:
6×x
= 54
100
⇒ 6 × x = 54 × 100
5400
⇒x=
6
⇒ x = 900
Step 3
Therefore, the total number of students in the school are 900.
(2) 10 n-1
Step 1
Since, we know that the greatest 1 digit number is 9.
Or, we can say that the greatest 1 digit number = 101 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9
= 10 n-1
Step 2

(3) 23,18
Step 1
It is given that the first number is 5 more than the second number.
Let us assume that the second number is x.
So, the first number will be x + 5.
Step 2
It is also given that the sum of both the numbers is 41.
Therefore, x + 5 + x = 41
⇒ 2x = 41 - 5
36
⇒x=
2
⇒ x = 18
Step 3
Thus, the first number = x + 5
= 18 + 5
= 23
The second number = x = 18
(4) y=5
Step 1
4y - 2 -4y + 5 -0.2y + 46
It is given that - =
-3 5 -15
(5)(4y - 2) - (-3)( -4y + 5) -0.2y + 46
⇒ =
-15 -15
(5)(4y - 2) + 3( -4y + 5) -0.2y + 46
⇒ =
-15 -15
Step 2
Since, denominator of both LHS and RHS is same, we can multiply both sides by -15 to get the
following:
⇒ 20y - 10 -12y + 15 = -0.2y + 46
⇒ 8y + 5 = -0.2y + 46
⇒ 8y + 0.2y = 46 - 5
⇒ 8.2y = 41
⇒y=5
Step 3
Therefore, the value of y is 5.

(5) -6a2 - 3a + 2
Step 1
If we subtract 3a2 - 9 from -3a2 - 3a - 7, we can find out the polynomial that must be subtracted
from -3a2 - 3a - 7 to get 3a2 - 9.
Step 2
To subtract the polynomial 3a2 - 9 from -3a2 - 3a - 7, first reverse the sign (turn '+' into '-' and '-'
into '+') of each term of the polynomial 3a2 - 9, as following:
- (3a2 - 9) = -3a2 + 9
Step 3
Now, we can add the like terms of two polynomials, as shown below.
-3a 2 -3a -7
-3a 2 +9
-6a 2 -3a +2
Step 4
(6) 10 g
Step 1
If we look at first scale carefully, we will notice that the weight of 6 strawberries is 12 g.
12
Therefore, the weight of a strawberry = =2g
6
The weight of 5 strawberries = 2 × 5 = 10 g
Step 2
If we look at the second scale carefully we will notice that the weight of one big strawberry and 5
strawberries is 20 g.
Since, the weight of 5 strawberries is 10 g, the weight of big strawberry = 20 - 10 = 10 g

(7) 2m + 14
Step 1
Number of oranges in each small box = m.
Total number of small boxes = 2.
Therefore, the total number of oranges in the 2 small boxes are:
= (Number of oranges in each small box) × (Total number of small boxes)
=m×2
= 2m
Step 2
Number of oranges in the large box = Number of oranges in the 2 smaller boxes + Number of
oranges remaining outside
= 2m + 14
Step 1
It is given that the length of the rectangular ground is 6 meters more than its breadth.
Let us assume that the breadth of the ground is w.
So, the length of the ground will be w + 6.
Step 2
Since, we know that the perimeter of a rectangle is twice the sum of length and the breadth of the
rectangle.
The perimeter of the ground = 2(w + w + 6) = 2(2w + 6)
Step 3
It is given that the perimeter of the rectangular ground is 52 meters.
Therefore, 2(2w + 6) = 52
⇒ 4w + 12 = 52
⇒ 4w = 52 - 12
⇒ 4w = 40
40
⇒w=
4
⇒ w = 10
Step 4
So, the length of the rectangular ground = w + 6 = 10 + 6 = 16 meters
The breadth of the rectangular ground = w = 10 meters

(9) 18
Step 1
Let x be the original number.
Step 2
If we look at the question carefully, we notice that if x is multiplied by 10 and 7 is added to the
product, then the result will be equal to 187.
Or, we can say that 10x + 7 = 187
⇒ 10x = 187 - 7
⇒ 10x = 180
180
⇒x=
10
⇒ x = 18
Step 3
Therefore, the original number is 18.
(10) 3
Step 1
If we look at the question carefully, we notice that 26 is the sum of 3x, 3x, x, and 5.
Step 2
Mathematically, we can say that,
3x + 3x + x + 5 = 26
⇒ 7x + 5 = 26
⇒ 7x = 26 - 5
21
⇒x=
7
⇒x=3
Step 3
So, the value of x is 3.

(11) RM12
Step 1
Let us assume that the entrance fee for each adult is RMx. Since, the children were charged with
x
half of the entrance fee, the fee for each child is RM .
2
Step 2
Since, Mr. and Mrs. Singh went to the magic show with their 2 children, the total fee charged is
equal to the sum of the entrance fee for Mr. and Mrs. Singh and their 2 children.
x
We can thus write, 2x + 2 × = RM36
2
2x
⇒ 2x + = RM36
2
⇒ 2x + 1x = 36
⇒ 3x = 36
36
⇒x=
3
⇒ x = 12
Step 3
Therefore, the entrance fee for each adult is RM12.
n (n+1)
(12) b.
2
Step 1
Step 2
n(n+1)
Now, we can say that the number of blocks in n th figure will be =

Step 3
Hence, option b is the correct answer.

(13) d. x = 2, y =
2
Step 1
Here, we are given an equation with 2 variables, i.e., 3 x + 2y = 9.
It is not possible to find the value of x and y from the given equation, as we require 2 equations to
find the value of 2 variables.
Step 2
However, we can substitute the values of x and y given in the options to check the correctness of
3
the equations. Among the given options, we can see that only x = 2, y = satisfies the equation.
2
3x + 2y = 9
3
⇒3×2+2× =9
2
⇒9=9
Step 3
Hence, option d is the correct answer.
(14) a. a(e-c) + cf + db
Step 1
Here, we need to find the area of the following shape:
Step 2
First, let us divide the given shape into three rectangles. The area of the shape in the question will be the
sum of these three rectangles:

ID : my-7-Algebra-Expressions-and-Equations [11]
Step 3
Area of rectangle 1 = length × width = d × b = db
Area of rectangle 2 = length × width = a × (e - c)
= a(e - c)
Area of rectngle 3 = length × width = c × f = cf
Step 4
Area of the shape in question = Area of rectangle 1 + Area of rectangle 2 + Area of rectangle 3
= db + a(e - c) + cf
Step 5
Hence, option a is the correct answer.

(15) a. 35
Step 1
If we look at the question carefully, we notice that we have to find out the value of 6 x - 7.
Step 2
Firstly, we have to find the value of x from the expression 6x + 7 = 49.
⇒ 6x = 49 - 7
42
⇒x=
6
⇒x=7
Step 3
Let us now place the value of x as 7, in the expression 6 x - 7.
6x - 7 = (6 × 7) - 7
= 42 - 7
= 35
Step 4
Thus, the correct answer is option a.
