the conversation.

Here are some strategies:

1. Using a short response to show that you are listening
You may use the following expressions:
Is that so? Oh? Good.
Really? And then? So sad.
Interesting. Yes?
I see. Great!
You can also use expressions for agreeing and disagreeing
2. Using an auxiliary to ask a question
Example:
Joy: I forgot my wallet yesterday. Ben: Traffic was heavy.
Jose: You did? Beth: It was?
-You do? (Do you?)
-He did? (Did he?)

3. Repeating a keyword or phrase

Cindy: I’m going to Siquijor this summer? Jean: His talk lasted for three hours.
Troy: Siquijor? Troy: Three hours?

What do you do next? When did this happen? How did it go?

5. Using body language that you are listening

looking at the speaker
leaning forward
smiling
nodding

6. Expanding comments or suggestions

Kristy: Hello, I hear you’re going abroad.
Danae: That’s right. I got a scholarship grant in Thailand.
