The Little Prince

Critique By: Angel Arcayos

The Little Prince ( Le Petit Prince ) was written in a fable style by the author and aviator
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry that was published with his illustrations in French as Le Petit Prince
around April 1943. It has genres of children’s literature. Saint-Exupéry is a French aviator and
writer whose works are a unique testimony of a pilot and a warrior who looked at adventure. He
was a pilot and once a soldier. Saint- Exupéry began writing The Little Prince during World War
ll. His book, The Little Prince is translated into a hundred languages and sold some 200 million
copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling books in publishing history.

This story follows a young prince who visits different planets in space, including
Earth and shows themes of loneliness, friendship, and love.
The story of the little prince has a connection to its author’s life, Saint-Exupéry, who
wrote the book while living in New York City, having fled the turmoil of world war ll in
France. Like the narrator or aviator in the story, he was a pilot who experienced a plane
crash in the Sahara. The author’s wife, Consuelo is also said to have erratic behavior
similar to the behavior of the Prince’s Rose– that Consuelo emphasizes in her later
autobiography, The Tale of the Rose, written in 1945.
In the movie adaptation of The Little Prince, They tell the story by putting a
character, the old man aviator who will Narrate the story and one child who listens to his
story. It did show the self-French illustration of aviator Saint-Exupéry by adding a scene
where the both girl and the aviator imagine the events in the story that the aviator
telling. There are also scenes and characters in the movie adaptation that is children the
book of The Little Prince but did a role that makes the story more understandable. The
movie was animated and looks like for children but it’s also for adult.
Despite its style as a children's book, The Little Prince makes observations about life,
adults, and human nature.
Both movie and the story of The Little Prince represent some social issues and
problems that are similar in the generation now. In the first one, The mother is in control
of her daughter’s future, which makes her daughter doesn't experience and think to
enjoy her childhood but think about how to be a well-grown woman. There are parents
like that, not all but a lot, controlling their child’s life that cause why a lot of children did
not enjoy themselves while they are still young but think about working hard not for their
selves or their dream, but not to disappoint their parents. Like the little girl, in the story
keeps doing her life plan by her mother, not for her selves but to obey his mother and
not make it disappoints her. In the second one, The neighbor of the aviator judges him
including the mother and child at first based on his lifestyle. There are a lot of people
like that in this generation, judging others without even knowing the real story behind
what they see. Minding other businesses and keep talking and throwing words that they
did not even think of or without even being sensitive. In the third one, a man’s thirst for
power. And the most important social issue here is people are too preoccupied with
wealth and power, missing the important things in life, such as beauty, love, and,
friendship. It seems like some people now didn't see the importance of those. Some of
them do not believe that money can't buy happiness. They forgot to enjoy their lives, to
enjoy having a lot of friends, not money.
There are also some objects or someone in the story that presents as a symbol that has
meanings.
. . The first one is the star. The aviator, after he met the little prince, he finds new
meaning in the stars because he knows that the prince lives among them. It means a
reminder of someone important to us. The little prince once said, "All men have stars
but they are not the same thing for other people.” The Second is the prince’s rose. The
rise of the little prince symbolizes love or to be loved. In the story, the Prince shows his
love for his rose. He shows how care he has for the rose and is happy to satisfy its
request. The rose was beloved so it represents that anyone is beloved. The third one is
the Fox. According to the fox, to tame someone or some creatures is to establish a
unique bond with them. By that words, the fox symbolize as creating a relationship and
friendship.
The little Prince story and movie has a lot of lessons.
The Aviator said, "All grown-ups were once children… but only a few of them remember
it..” It tells that we can be a well-grown man and woman even without forgetting the
beauty of love, friendship, and childhood. The little prince said, "It’s only the heart that
one can see rightly, what is essential is the invisible to the eye.” There is only a finite
number of things we can devote ourselves to while we're alive. Pick those carefully. At
the end of the movie, the little girl said "You run a risk of weeping a little, if you let
yourself get tamed” and to be tamed, you need to break down your walls and open up
yourself.
