REAMERS
1 SCOPE
This Standardcovers the American National Stand- clearance - the space createdby the relief behind the
ard forReamers - nomenclature, definitions, types, cutting edge or margin of a reamer
sizes, and tolerances. core - the central portion of a reamer below the
flutes which joins the lands
2 NOMENCLATURE AND DEFINITIONS core diameter - the diameter ata given point along
reamer - a rotary cutting tool with one or more the axis of the largest circle which does not project
cutting elementsused for enlargingto size and contour into the flutes
a previously formed hole. Its principalsupport during cutter sweep - the section removed by the milling
the cutting action is obtained from the workpiece. cutter or grinding wheel in entering or leaving a flute
(See Fig. 1.) cutting edge - the leading edge of the relieved land
actual size - the actual measured diameter of a in the direction of rotation for cutting
reamer, usually slightly larger than the nominalsize cutting face - the leading side of the relieved land
to allow for wear in the direction of rotation for cutting on which the
angle of taper - the included angle of taper on a chip impinges
taper tool or taper shank external center - the pointed endof a reamer. The
arbor hole - the central mounting hole ina shell included angle varies withmanufacturing practice.
reamer flutes - longitudinal channels formed in the body of
axis - the imaginary straightline which forms the the reamer to provide cutting edges, permit passage
longitudinal centerline of a reamer, usually estab- of chips, and allow cutting fluidto reach the cutting
lished by rotating the reamerbetween centers edges
back taper - a slight decrease indiameter, from front angular flute - a flute which forms a cutting face
to back, in the flutelength of reamers lying in a plane intersecting the reamer axis at an
bevel - an unrelieved angular surfaceof revolution angle. It is unlike a helical flute in that it forms a
(not to be confused with.chamfer) cutting face which lies in a single plane.
body - the fluted full diameter portion ofa reamer, helical flute - (sometimes called spiral flute) a flute
inclusive of the chamfer, starting taper, andbevel which is formed in a helical path around theaxis of
chamfer - the angular cutting portion at the entering a reamer
end of a reamer [see also secondary (chamfer)] spiralflute (1) on a taper reamer,a flute of constant
chamfer angle - the angle between the axis and the lead; or,
cutting edge ofthe chamfer measured in axialan plane (2) in reference to a straight reamer, see
at the cutting edge preferred term helical flute.
chamfer length -the length ofthe chamfer measured straight flute - a flute which formsa cutting edge
parallel to the axis at the cuttingedge lying in an axial plane
chamfer relief angle - see under relief flute length - the length of the flutes notincluding
chamfer relief - see under relief the cutter sweep
chip breakers - notches or grooves in the cutting guide - a cylindrical portion following the flutes of
edges of some taper reamers designed to break the a reamer to maintain alignment
continuity of thechips heel - the trailing edge of the land in the direction
circular land - see preferred term margin of rotation for cutting

ASME 694.2-1995 REAMERS
helix angle - the angle which a helical cutting edge whose cutting edgelags the surface of the cutting face
at a given point makes with an axial plane through positive rake - describes a cutting face in rotation
the same point whose cutting edge leads the surface of the cutting
hook - a concave condition ofa cutting face. The face
rake of a hooked cutting face must be determined at radial rake angle - the angle ina transverse plane
a given point. between a straight cutting face and a radial line pass-
internal center - a 60 deg countersink with clearance ing through the cuttingedge
at the bottom, in one or both ends of a tool, which relief - the result of the removal of tool material
establishes the tool axis behind or adjacent to the cutting edge to provide
irregular spacing- a deliberate variation from uni- clearance and prevent rubbing (heel drag)
form spacing of the reamer cuttingedges axial relief- the relief measured in the axial direction
land - the section of the reamer between adjacent between a plane perpendicular to the axis and the
flutes relieved surface. It can be measured by the amount
land width - the distance between the leading edge of indicator drop ata given radius in a given amount
of the land and the heel measured at a right angle to of angular rotation.
the leading edge cam relief - the relief from the cuttingedge to the
lead of flute - the axial advance ofa helical or spiral heel of the land producedby a cam action
cutting edge in one turn around the reamer axis chamfer relief - the axial relief on the chamferof
length - the dimension of any reamerelement meas- the reamer
ured parallel to thereamer axis chamfer relief angle - the axial relief angle at the
limits - the maximum and minimum values desig- outer corner of the chamfer. Itis measured by pro-
nated for a specific element jection into a plane tangent to the periphery at the
margin - the unrelieved part of the periphery of the outer corner of the chamfer.
land adjacent to thecutting edge eccentric relief - a convex relieved surface behind
margin width - the distancebetween the cuttingedge the cutting edge
and the primary relief measured at a right angle to flat relief - a relieved surface behind the cutting edge
the cutting edge which is essentially flat
neck - the section of reduced diameter connecting primary relief - the relief immediately behind the
shank to body, or connecting other portions of the cutting edge or margin. Properly called relief.
reamer radial relief - relief in a radial direction measured
nominal size - the designatedbasic size of a reamer in the plane of rotation. It can be measured by the
overall length - the extreme lengthof the complete amount of indicator drop aatgiven radius in a given
reamer from end to end, but not including external amount of angular rotation.
centers or expansion screws secondary relief - an additional relief behind the
periphery - the outside circumference ofa reamer primary relief
pilot - a cylindrical portion preceding the entering relief angle - the angle, measured in a transverse
end of the reamer body to maintain alignment plane, between the relieved surface and a plane tan-
gent to theperiphery at the cuttingedge
rake - the angular. relationshipbetween the cutting
face, or a tangent to the cutting face at a given point secondary chamfer - a slight relieved chamfer ad-
and a given reference plane or line jacent to and following the initial chamfer ona reamer
axial rake - applies to angular (nothelical or spiral) shank - the portion of the reamer by which it is held
cutting faces. It is the angle between a plane con- and driven
taining the cutting face, or tangent to thecutting face squared shank - a cylindrical shank having a driving
at a given point, and the reameraxis. square on the back end
helical rake - applies onlyto helical and spiral cutting starting radius - a relieved radius at the entering end
faces (not angular). It is the angle between a plane, of a reamer in place of a chamfer
tangent to the cutting face at a given point on the starting taper - a slight relieved taper on the front
cutting edge, and the reameraxis. end of a reamer
negative rake - describes a cutting face in rotation straight shank - a cylindrical shank

tang - the flatted end of a taper shank which fits a shell reamers - machine reamers mountable on ar-
slot in the socket bors (called “shell reamer arbors”) specifically de-
taper per foot- the difference in diameter between signed for that purpose
two points 12 in. apart measured along theaxis
taper shank - a shank made to fit a specific (conical)
taper socket 5 DIRECTION OFROTATION AND HELIX
The terms “right hand” and “left hand” are used
3 CLASSIFICATIONS BASEDON to describe both direction of rotation and direction
CONSTRUCTION of flute helix or reamers.
( a ) Hand of Rotation ( o r Hand of Cut):
solid reamers - those made of one piece of tool right-hand rotation ( o r right-hand cut) - when

wise to cut
