Celebration of Christian Baptism

Gabriel Scott Benirschke & Alexander Lewis Benirschke

Pastor: They were bringing children to Jesus that he might touch them; and the
disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant, and said to them,

People: “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them, for to them belongs
the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the
kingdom of God like a child, shall not enter into it.”

Pastor: And Jesus took the children into his arms and he blessed them, laying his
hands upon them and calling them his own. The sacrament of baptism symbolizes the
love by which God reaches out to us even when we are very young. We are here
today to affirm that God loves Gabriel and Alex Benirschke and to offer ourselves as
instruments of God’s love in their lives. Who brings these children to be baptized?

Parents: We do. Because of the love God has shown to us in blessing us with these
children, we want to have our children baptized as a sign of our commitment to
raising them in the Christian faith.

Pastor: Ashley and Robert seek God’s guidance and ask for our support in helping
Gabriel and Alex to grow to respect themselves and others and to know themselves as
children of God and followers of Christ. They bring their children here today with joy,
acknowledging them as a gift from God, and dedicating them to the community in
Christ. To the people of church gathered here today, how will you receive these young
ones?

People: We, the church, promise to love and care for Gabriel & Alex
Benirschke. We will help them hold fast to that which is good and to return to
no one evil for evil. We will love them and show them with our lives, how
Christians live. By this affirmation, we commit ourselves to these children.

Pastor: And for the children of the church, will you promise to love and care for Gabriel
and Alex, will you be their friend, and help them learn the ways of life in our church? If
so, say, we will.

Children: We will!

Pastor: Robert and Ashley as parents of this child, Daniel and Jennifer, Matthew and
Monika as caring Godparents, and to their loving family, will you answer these
questions: Will you live your lives as people of faith and followers of Jesus Christ?

Parents/Godparents: We will, with the help of God.

Pastor: Will you raise Gabriel and Alex to seek justice and resist evil, to show love and
compassion for all of God’s creation, and help them to grow in the faith?

Parents/Godparents: We will, with the help of God.

Pastor: Will you teach them the value of community, share with them the importance
of service and raise your children to love God and neighbor?

Parents/Godparents: We will, with the help of God.

The Baptism and Presentation to the Congregation

You are baptized in the name of God: Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit…

People: Almighty God, giver of life, you have called us by name and pledged to
each of us your faithful love. We pray for these blessed gifts of your creation,
Gabriel and Alex Benirschke. Inspire their lives to your service. May they sing
many songs, know many joys, heal many wounds, and embrace many people
in Your name. We pray for their parents. Help them to know you, to love with
your love, to teach with your truth, so that 486-child
Gabriel and Alex may hear

Sermon Scripture Isaiah 43: 1-4a

Sermon “Three Little Words” Rev. Jason W. Coulter

Invitation to Offering The Lamb David Giardiniere

Little lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Who gave thee
life and bid thee feed by the stream and o'er the mead? Who gave thee
clothing of delight, softest clothing, woolly bright? Who gave thee such a
tender voice making all the vales rejoice? Little lamb, I'll tell thee. He is
called by thy name. For He calls Himself a Lamb. He is meek, and He is
mild, He became a little child. I a child, and thou a lamb; we are called by
His name. I His child and thou a lamb; we are called by His name. Little
lamb God bless thee. (William Blake)

*Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Christ, all people here below;
Praise Holy Spirit evermore;
One God, Triune whom we adore. Amen.

*Prayer of Dedication
Gracious and loving God, you are the giver of all good gifts. You gave us life
and life abundantly. In appreciation for this gift, we return to you our tithes
and offerings. May the church use them to bring forth life in new and
surprising ways. Amen.

Service of Holy Communion

At First Congregational Church of Evanston, all people, and we mean, ALL PEOPLE,
are welcome at Christ’s table. At the pastor’s call, you are invited to come forward to
receive the elements of the Lord’s Supper. In the communion plate, you will find bread
and gluten-free wafers. In the trays, you will find small glasses of grape juice. We also
have small communion kits for those who prefer them. Regardless of how you receive
this meal, know that God blesses your presence at Christ’s table!

Invitation …. Jesus Christ, who has sat at our tables, now invites us to be guests at
his.
Congregational Prayer
O God, how wonderful is the work of your hands! Through your son, Jesus,
you came to us and entered this world, that we might more fully know you and
your love. Jesus healed the sick, though he himself would suffer; he offered
life to sinners, though death would hunt him down. But with a love stronger
than death, he rose on Easter morning to give the gift of life to all who call on
his holy name. Bless his holy name and bless these gifts which we are about
to receive.

Words of Institution …This is my body, broken for you…This is my blood, shed for
you…

Congregational Response
Holy, holy, holy -- God of love and majesty
The whole universe speaks of your glory -- O God Most High.

Pastoral Prayer of Thanksgiving

Call to the Supper The gifts of God for the people of God. Come for all things are
ready.

Congregational Prayer of Thanksgiving

Gracious God, in deep gratitude for this meal, for this moment, and for your
Son Jesus, we give thanks to you. Take us out to live as changed people,
because we have shared the living bread, drank from the cup of blessing, and
can no longer remain the same. Make us instruments of your love so that we
may we live our lives to your glory, both as inhabitants of earth and citizens of
the commonwealth of heaven. Amen.

Prayers of the People - Pastoral Prayer - Silent Prayer

Prayer of Our Savior

Our Creator, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

voice of God, assuring the person being baptized of God’s presence throughout the changing stages of life.
It offers a reminder that baptism is a once-in-a-lifetime event.

On Sunday, June 11th bring your joy and gladness
to church for we have a lot to celebrate! On this
special Sunday we will

• Give thanks to God for our Choir and show

• Recognize our Sunday School Teachers and
Nursery Staff for the love and care they give
to our youngest ones,
• Honor our Graduates for making it to the
finish line,
• Bless and celebrate our new vision document
– Becoming the Church! – as the process of
discernment draws to a close, and the
season of change comes into focus.

It truly is a great time to be the church and to

celebrate all that we are, and all that God is calling
us to become! So join us on Celebration Sunday at
10 am and then stick around for the Potluck Picnic
on the church's front porch. The Church provides

Hilda’s Place Needs Your Support

As a longtime partner of Connections for the Homeless and Hilda's

Place, FCCE provides meals for its clients on the first Saturday of
each month. We are looking for three more volunteers for 2023,
to provide 30 individually packaged hot meals on August
5 and September 2. If you're interested in helping but worried it's a
big effort, one idea is to partner with another family from FCCE or
your own circle of friends. Another idea is to support a local restaurant and have them
deliver meals on your assigned date (a double win for the community!). We've got a list
of trusted businesses to make this an option easy.

Please contact Julie Captain to sign up or with any questions. Thank YOU for helping
to care for our community and neighbors.

name, address and email so that we might acknowledge your visit with a card. All are
welcome to join us after services in the narthex or outside for refreshments and
conversation.

We strive to host inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals to fully engage
in our community. To request an accommodation or for inquiries about
accessibility, call the Church Office at 847-864-8332 or send an email to

Babies and Toddlers: Little ones enrich our community and add vibrancy
to our congregation. Please don't fret about coos or cries during the service. All ages
are welcome here. Visit our rocking chair area to find books & coloring pages for use
during the service, or you are welcome to drop off infants to 3 year-olds with
our Nursery Supervisor.

Children: Young people are invited to come forward for the Children's Message during

team to our Sunday School classroom at the Church House, 1/2 block down Hinman
Ave. At the end of the service, leaders bring children back to the sanctuary to join their
families for fellowship time. Adult visitors are welcome to accompany their children to
