Main Theme
The overall theme of the book of Jonah is God’s compassion for everyone and his willingness to
extend grace and mercy to all people. A secondary theme to Jonah is the natural resistance fallen
humans have when called on to serve the Lord. Jonah understood his first call but decided to run
instead of listening to the Lord’s direction. That decision to run came with consequences but it
also provided an opportunity for the sailors to see the mighty power of God when the storm was
calmed after Jonah went overboard. God didn’t give up on Jonah, he allowed him to pout and be
angry but eventually, Jonah relented and received his second call. This was an unpleasant
journey for Jonah, but he did as the Lord required of him and Nineveh repented however, this
was not a happy outcome for Jonah, who was more concerned with the judgment he felt the
people of Nineveh deserved than the grace God had chosen to bestow upon them.
Time of Composition
The date of composition is closely linked to who the author of Jonah was. “If Jonah wrote the
book, then it would obviously date during the reign of Jeroboam II in the early eighth century,
approximately 793 – 753 B.C.” (Nelson) If the book was written by someone other than Jonah,
then it could have been written at any point after the incident described in the book occurred. If
the book was written by a narrator, the argument could be made that it was written either during
the pre-exilic reign of Jeroboam II or it could have a post-exilic date after the fall of Nineveh.
Audience of Jonah
The book of Jonah was written to all people, both Jew and Gentile, believer or non-believer. This
book is unique, and its story is profoundly universal to all mankind. The purpose of the book of
Jonah is to express God’s unwavering love for all men which can be seen “when he answered the
prayers of the Gentile sailors and responded to the repentance of the pagan Ninevites.” (Nelson)
