Guide Question:
What was our topic yesterday?
Kinds of fraction

Proper fraction
is a fraction which has its numerator value less than the denominator.
,
Improper fraction
is a fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator.

Mixed fraction
is a whole number, and a proper fraction represented together. It generally
represents a number between any two whole numbers.

Direction: State whether the given fractions are proper, improper, or mixed numbers

1. 9∕5
2. 4 /10
3. 5 2∕7
4. 11/5
5. 4 5∕6
C. Motivation
The teacher will show pictures that shows Hospitality

What similarities have you seen in these picture?

What Filipino traits is being shown in the picture?

Have you experience entertaining visitors at you home?

does he have?

How many kilograms of pork did Mang Kanor buy?

What is being asked in the problem?

How will you solve the problem?

Do you know how to change 23/8 to mixed number?

How about to change 2 ¾ to improper fraction?

And that will be our lesson for today.

D. Discussion

Changing Improper Fractions to Mixed numbers and Vice Versa

Change Improper Fraction to Mixed Numbers

Let’s change 23/8 to a mixed number

Two ways:

1. By drawing regions

8/8 + 8/8 + 7/8 = 23/8

1 whole 1 whole 7/8 = 2 7/8

2. By Computation
Divide numerator by the denominator

2 The quotient will be the whole number

8 23
- 16

7 The remainder will be the numerator

The divisor will be the denominator

23/8 = 2 7/8

Problem # 1

How many eights did Marie make out of the egg pie?

Marie make 2 7/8 of egg pie.

Another example :

Ana bought a pizza at the market while she walking she ate one slice of pizza. She
notice that 31/9 are left in a pizza. How many whole of pizza and slices she will take home.

3 Whole number

9 31

-27 = 31/9 = 3 4/9

4 numerator

denominator

Ana will take home 3 4/9 of the pizza.

Example: 9/2

4 Whole number

2 9

-8

1 numerator

denominator

9/2 = 4 ½

Change Mixed Numbers to Improper Fraction

Change 2 ¾ to Improper Fraction

Two ways:

1. By drawing regions

1 + 1 = ¾ = 2¾

4/4 + 4/4 = ¾ = 11/4

By computation

a. Multiply the denominator by whole number.

b. Add the numerator to the product of the denominator and whole number.
c. Copy the given denominator.

2¾ 4x2+3 8+3 11
= = =
X 4 4 4
Problem # 2

How many fourths of kilogram of beef does Mang Kanor have?

Mang Kanor bought 11/4 of beef.

Another example:

Father gives me 3 1/8 of chicken breast. How many eights of kilograms of chicken
breast does I have.

+
3 1/8 = 8x3+1 = 24 + 1 = 25
x 8 8 8

Father gives me 25/8 of chicken breast.

Example: 10 1/3

+
10 1/3 = 3x10+1 = 30 + 1 = 31
x 3 3 3

E. Generalization
How do we change improper fractions to mixed form?
How do we change mixed numbers to improper fractions?

F. Application
Group Activity:
Race and match!
Match the improper fraction to its mixed number and mixed number to its improper
fraction.
The first group who matches correctly the column A to B will get an additional score.

A B
10/3 19/2
8 1/3 5 2/5
27/5 3 1/3
9½ 8 2/4
26/4 25/3

III. Evaluation
A. Convert each improper fraction to a mixed number
1.9⁄5
2.1 1/6
3.65⁄11

B. Solved these following problems.

1. My sister asked me to buy cassava cake for her guests while I was walking, I saw a
beggar so I gave him one slide of cassava cake. There is 12/7 left. How many whole of
cassava cake and slices will be served to her guests.
