BACKYARD SWINE PRODUCTION IN PAPAAC

Introduction

Pig farming, pork farming or hog farming is the raising and breeding of domestic pigs as
livestock, and is a branch of animal husbandry …Pigs are farmed principally for food (e,g. pork: bacon,
ham, gammon) and skin. To raise swine, it is important to consider the environment and shelter, food and
water source. Selection of breed is also another thing to consider in swine production, finding a good
quality breed that is adaptable in the environment ensures a good quality pork. It is truly a challenge to
raise swine because of the risk of the outbreaking ASF (African Swine Fever) and other diseases globally
as well as locally, the fight on maintaining these diseases off is very hard, in addition, maintaining
Biosecurity is a challenge specially for our local raisers.

According to the latest OECD/FAO projection to the year 2031 (OECD/ FAO,2022), global pork
demand is expected to raise from the average annual level of 110.5 million metric tons during the most
recent triennial period (i.e., 2019-2021) to 128.9 million metric tons in 2031. In the 2021, global pork
production amounted to about over 100 million metric tons, Global pork production is being led by
China, which is estimated to produce over 50 million metric tons of pork by the end of 2022.The
European union and the United States hold the second and third position, respectively.

Southeast Asian pig raising and pork industry is forecast to maintain growth from 2023- 2032. On
the one hand, the expansion of pig raising and pork industry in South Asian countries and low labor cost
have prompted global pork processors to shift production capacity to these regions. on the other hand,
economic growth in Southeast Asian and increase in population incomes led to growth in market demand
for pork. There are also some differences in the production scale of pig raising in pork industry in 10
Southeast Asian countries. According to the publisher’s analysis, Myanmar, Vietnam, and the Philippines
have more than 10 million pigs on hand in 2019, of which Myanmar is the largest pig raising industry
among the Southeast Asian countries, with 21.604 million pigs on hand in 2019. Indonesia, Thailand,
Laos, and Cambodia also have relatively sizable pig raising industry, while Brunei and Singapore have a
small or almost non-existent pig raising industry.

“There will be a slight decline in the local supply of pork” Lani Planta Cerna, supervising Animal
industry (BAI), said at the Lagging Handa public briefing, referring to the Department of agriculture’s
supply outlook as of October. The inventory of frozen pork in accredited cold storage facilities reached
113,267.19 metric tons of Nov. 21, up by 1.2 percent from a weak ago, according to the latest tally from
the National Meat Service (NMIS). As per NMIS , Imported frozen pork accounted for the majority with
110,850.43 MT while the remaining 2,416.76 MT are produced locally . Latest figured from the BAI
showed the country sourced 1.01 billion kilograms of meat from January to September this year. More
than half of meat imports comprised of pork, which totaled 542.2 million kg, mostly sourced from Spain.
The Arican swine fever (ASF), which was first detected in 2019, is presently active in six regions, namely
Ilocos region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas Soccsksargen.

1.0 Statement of the Problem

This study and the researchers aim to determine the daily struggles and present of a backyard swine
producer in Papaac Camiling, Tarlac. The backyard swine production industry faces a number of
challenges and problems that can impact the health and productivity of the pigs. Some of the most
common issues include:

Disease: Backyard swine can be susceptible to a variety of diseases, including porcine reproductive
and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), African swine fever (ASF), and swine influenza. These diseases can
be difficult to diagnose and treat, and can lead to significant losses in production and revenue.

Nutrition: Providing proper nutrition for backyard swine can be a challenge, particularly in areas
where feed supplies are limited. Malnutrition can lead to health problems and reduced productivity.

Housing: Proper housing is important for the health and well-being of backyard swine. Inadequate
housing can lead to increased susceptibility to disease, stress, and reduced productivity.

Waste management: Backyard swine produce a significant amount of waste, which can lead to
environmental contamination and public health concerns if not managed properly.

Overall, the backyard swine production industry faces a number of challenges that require careful
management and attention to ensure the health and productivity of the pigs, as well as the viability of the
business.

1) How can backyard swine producers ensure the proper management of waste to prevent
environmental contamination?
2) What are the challenges a swine productor has to face daily?
3) How does he face or solve it?
4) Based on the findings, what suggestions, solutions, and recommendations may be given to help
improve the situation?
5) What legal and regulatory requirements must be followed when selling pork directly to consumers?

1.1 Significance of the Study

The significance of a study on backyard swine production is multifaceted. Some possible points
to consider are:

Swine: Swine are valuable for their flesh, prepared as ham, bacon, and pork, and for their fat
(lard); they also provide many other products, e.g., leather for gloves, footballs, and other articles, and
bristles for brushes. Hogs are commonly grouped as meat-type or lard-type, with the former
dominating the U.S. farms. Hogs are raised in nearly all parts of the United States, but the corn belt of
the Midwest is the chief hog-raising area, with Iowa by far the leading hog production state.

Researchers: For the researchers, the study will help educate them from the institution they
belong and explore the ideas for educational purposes.

Future researchers: This study would help the student researchers to be aware and
knowledgeable regarding related topics about swine production. This study can be used as the new
researcher's instrument and related literature or topic that can support their study regarding the topic.

1.2 Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study mainly focuses on raising of pigs of personal consumption, including the potential for
disease transmission, environmental impact, and food safety concerns in the vicinity of Brgy. Papaac this
gathering information will be distributed by 10 respondents.
