TOPIC 2: DRAWING AND EDITING COMMANDS

Introduction:

Drawing tool in AutoCAD helps you in creating and constructing the geometrical shapes.
Basically all drawing models are created by combination of different geometrical shapes. In this
lesson, you will learn how to execute the drawing of different basic drawing tools such as: lines,
poly lines, circles, rectangles, ellipse and arcs.

Lines and Polylines

The difference between the line and polyline is that the lines created in the polyline
command are interconnected in every segment made while line command each segment created
are separate with each other. Showed in figure 2.1 the difference of the two. When selecting the
figure made in the polyline command (left) just a click to highlight the lines while the lines made
with line command (right) all the segments will be clicked to highlight the object created.
Although, the execution of this commands are the same.

Fig 2.1. Different rectangles made with polyline (left) and line (right) commands.

Directions in using Line/Polyline command.

A. Creating a line/polyline using the mouse.
1. Move the graphics cursor to the first icon in the
Draw panel. This icon is the Line icon (Fig 2.2).
Note that a brief description of the Line command
appears next to the cursor.
2. Select the icon by clicking once with the left-
mouse-button, which will activate the Line
command.
3. At the command line, the computer displayed
“LINE specify first point”. AutoCAD expects us to
determine the location of the first point of the line.

Figure 2.2 Move the graphic cursor anywhere in the drawing

window and select area for the first point then click the “Left click of the mouse”.
4. Again, at the command line, the computer displayed “Specify next point”. AutoCAD
expects us to determine the other point of the line. Move the graphic cursor to the desired
location of the second point of the line.
5. When the line is created, the AutoCAD will continually ask for another end point. Thus,
when the desired line is finished, click the “right click of the mouse” (a pop up menu will
appear) then click enter to stop the Line/Polyline command or press the “enter” key in the
keyboard.

B. Creating a line/Polyline using relative rectangular coordinate entry for the first point
and relative polar coordinate entry for the other points.
1. Type “L” (shortcut key for Line) or “PL” (shortcut key for Polyline) then enter.
2. For the first point, type @6,0 then enter. (the relative rectangular coordinate choose the
first point which is 6 unit from the x-axis
and 0 units from the y-axis).
3. Type @10<0, then enter
Figure 2.3
4. Type @5<90, then enter
5. Type @3<180, then enter
6. Type @2<270, then enter
7. Type @5<180, then enter
8. Type @2<90, then enter
9. Type @2<180, then enter
10. Type @5<270, then enter
11. Press enter again. Figure 2.3 will be completed.

Exercise No.1. Using with your knowledge in geometry and the second direction of making lines
(Direction B), try to make a perfect star just like in figure 2.4 and complete the following table.
Start at point A.

1. Type ________, then ENTER.

2. Type @0,0, then ENTER. (0,0 will be the
first point).
3. Type @10<____, then ENTER.
4. Type @10<____, then ENTER.
5. Type @10<____, then ENTER.
6. Type @10<0, then ENTER.
A
7. Type @10<____, then ENTER.
8. Press ENTER again.

Directions in using Circle command.

Circle can be created by means of center radius, center diameter, two points (2P), three points (3P)
and Tangent, tangent ,radius (Ttr)

To activate the circle command use one of the following steps.

1. Draw Toolbar.
The draw toolbar can be seen in the left side of the drawing window (Note: the workspace
should be in AutoCAD Classic).

2. Draw from the pull-

down menu bar.

3. Key Board

Type “C” on the command line and then press ENTER.

Center, Radius Option

1. Specify the center of the circle.

2. Type “R”, then press enter.
3. Type the dimension (radius of the circle), then press enter

Center, Diameter Option

1. Specify the center of the circle.

2. Type “D”, then press enter.
3. Type the dimension (diameter of the circle), then press enter

2P Option

1. Specify the point for the circle or[ 3P/2P/TTR].

2. Type “2P”, then press enter
3. Specify the first point of the circle's diameter.
4. Specify the second point of the circle's diameter.

3P Option

1. Specify the point for the circle or [3P/2P/TTR].

2. Type “3P”, then press enter
3. Specify the first point of the circle.
4. Specify the second point of the circle.
5. Specify the third point of the circle.

Directions in using Rectangle command.

Rectangle can be created by means of area, dimension and rotation.

To activate the rectangle command, use the process 1 and 2 in circles, but choose rectangle
instead of circle. We can also use the process 3 as follows:

Key board

Type “REC”, then ENTER.

Specify the first corner point. (place where your one corner is located)

Area

1. Type “A”, then press ENTER.

2. Type the area of the rectangle.
3. Specify where the dimension is based, click Length or Width.
4. Type the dimension of length of the rectangle, then press ENTER.

Dimension

1. Type “D”, then press ENTER.

2. Specify the length of the rectangle (along x-axis), then press ENTER.
3. Specify the width of the rectangle then press ENTER.
4. Then click the left side of the mouse.

Rotation

1. Type “R”, then press ENTER.

2. Specify the rotation angle (orientation of the angle of rotation), then press ENTER.
3. Then proceed to the process for using area and/or dimension.

Directions in using Polygon command.

To activate the rectangle command, use the process 1 and 2 in circles, but choose rectangle
instead of circle. We can also use the process 3 as follows:

Key board

1. Type “POL”, then ENTER.

2. Enter the number of sides of the polygon, the ENTER.
3. Specify the Center of the polygon (click where will be the center of the polygon).
4. Specify if the polygon is inscribed or circumscribe with the circle.
5. Specify the radius of the circle, then ENTER.

Trim Tool

Trims objects to meet the edges of the objects. To trim objects, select
boundaries. Then press Enter and select the objects that you want to trim.
To use all objects as boundaries, press enter at the first Select objects
prompt.

Trim Tool Command

1. Type “TR”, then press ENTER.

2. Specify the boundary/ies of the line to be
trimmed, then press ENTER.
3. Select the line/s to be trimmed, then press
ENTER.

Extend Tool

Extends objects that meet the edges of the other objects. To extend
objects, first select the boundaries. The press Enter and select the objects
that you want to extend. To use all objects as boundaries, press Enter at
the first Select Objects prompt.

Extend Tool Command

1. Type “EX”, then press ENTER.

2. Select/ specify the boundary or the point
of extension, then press ENTER.
3. Select the object/s that will be extended,
then press ENTER.
