Question one; Who were believed to be the creators of your history mystery, where is it located
(specifically) and why were they created!

The trracotta warriors were created by Qin Shi Huang’s slaves. They were made to protect Qin Shi Huang
in the afterlife because he killed a lot of people to get into power. They were also made to protect his
grave from tomb robbers. The terracotta warrior is located near the city of Xi’an in China’s Shaanxi
province. After the warriors were found, the site because a museum a World Heritage Site in 1987.

Question two; How was your history mystery thought to be created? What was it made of and what
tools would have been used to create it and move it?

The warriors were made from clay blocks mined in Lishan Hill called Lishan clay, a material which was
easy to obtain at the time. The clay blocks were kneaded with water, then mixed in with quartz sand,
mica, and feldspar. The workers then kneaded the mixture into clay rolls that were said to be easier to
use and mold with.

To make the warriors, the craftsmen started from the bottom, making a plate for the foot and leg, which
shortly after were connected. Next the short pants were added on, which were hollow for an easy fit of
the legs going through. Making the torso and upper body, the clay rolls were built upwards with a sack
cloth in the hollowed stomach shaping the way the clay that kept being added to their satisfactory.
People suspected they used a flat wooden object to smooth over the clay. Then more clay was added
over the already existing frame with details added in with smaller objects. The arms were made using
the coiling technique, details after with extra clay was added. Once the torso was dried from the shade,
they would attach the arms in the hollowed arm sockets. For each head they made the same shape yet
added individuality by carving, scraping, engraving, and pasting on clay.

The bodies and hands had to dry in the shade for 24 hours at least, they would poke two to five more
holes in the bodies, so the warrior didn’t break in the kiln. After they were fired in the kiln, 12-24 hours
later, they would assemble the heads onto the bodies. To cover the whole figure, they would have to
extract lacquer from 25 trees, and depending on the figure artisans would have to apply one or two
layers of lacquer over the figure, they would paint over the lacquer with color after. Eggs and Pigments
were mixed to become paint that they use to cover over the lacquer.

Question three; What are some of the different theories surrounding the creation of your history
mystery?

Qin Shi Huang killed lots of people in his life, and he was scared in his after life that they would come for
revenge, so he made an army to protect him in his afterlife.

Qin Shi Huang had wanted to build these soldiers, so he talked to some trusted men and finally came up with
a solution. He wanted to bury real soldiers, but he felt bad.

A minister suggested to make pottery soldiers instead. Qin Shi Huang liked that idea and called
some skilful craftsmen and they started making the army of clay soldiers called the terracotta army.

Qin Shi Huang wanted his soldiers to look exactly like his real ones to show his triumph by conquering other
states that were fighting China.

When Qin Shi Huang took the throne, he had lots more power and wanted to rule the country
permanently, so he tried to become immortal. However, he gradually came to the thought that it was
impossible. He kept wondering how he would keep his powers in the afterlife. In ancient China it was
believed that you would go to another afterlife underground. Qin Shi Huang thought that inanimate
animals and human statues would come to life in the underworld, and he thought that his terracotta
army would protect him from states in the underworld. And that is why the Terracotta Warriors were
built.

Question four; Which theory do you and your group believe is closest to the truth? Why?

Our group believes the theory closest to the truth is where the terracotta warriors were built up to
protect him in the afterlife as he was scared that the people, he killed for power will come to haunt him
in his tomb for revenge.
