A05 How to use the SMARK system

The SMARK system will be used to assess selected practical tasks as well as during the semester
tests.
Instead of using the Refresh option in the browser, rather use the menu options to navigate away and
back to any page you might want to have refreshed.
1. Getting Started
• In the Computing Sciences labs (Embizweni building), you can also access the
SMARK system by double clicking on the SMARK icon on the desktop.

At home, open your browser (e.g. Chrome or Edge ). In the address bar,
type: smark.converttocode.com

• A login screen should open. Enter your NMU email address (e.g.
[email protected]), and use Mandela@23 as the Password. (Do not change the
password at any stage, please.)

2. Selecting a project to work on

• A list of available projects will be displayed. Identify the correct project, then click on Attempt
Project.

Note: If you get a screen with a message that the “awesomeness” has been broken it just means
that your session has timed out and you have been logged out. Click the red word Smark to go
back in – you may be returned to where you were or to the log in screen so that you can log in
again.

3. Download the start (data) file

• Click on Download to get a copy of the data file. You should save this file to your relevant
Weekly Tasks folder. Note that you need to use this version of the data file, and not another
version (e.g. from the FCS data files folder).

• If you are using Chrome, the file download is indicated in the bottom left, when the download is
completed, you can open file, and then save it to your relevant Weekly Tasks folder. If you are
using Chrome on campus, you might be prompted for the Save Location – browse to your
relevant Weekly Tasks folder.

If you are using Edge, once you click Download, a pop-up window appears once the file is
downloaded to your Downloads folder. Click the Open file text to open the document. Now
select to Save As… to your relevant Weekly Tasks folder.

4. Complete the project

• Return to the instructions in the weekly guide, FCS book and the relevant Office program (e.g.
Word).
• Complete all the instructions for the Project. Do not change the filename. It should correspond
to the filename specified in the weekly guide.

5. Submit the project

• Return to the SMARK program (if you still have the browser open, just maximize that window, if
not, locate it again, and login to the system).
• Click on the Browse button, navigate to your relevant Weekly Tasks folder, and click on the
correct file.
• Once the file has been selected, click on the Submit button.

• If the Submit was successful, you should see the following screen. Click on OK. If you receive
an error message (red X), you could attempt one of the following solutions: 1) click on the back
to projects link, and proceed as before; 2) refresh your browser, and proceed as before; 3) close
this browser, and repeat the process using a different browser (if you were using Chrome, try
using Internet Explorer – or the other way around).

6. View report
• After successful submission, the list of projects is displayed, with an option of viewing the report.

7. Clicking on View Report will list individual submissions, with the allocated mark, status and an option
to view the Mark Report. If the Status is Marked the report will be ready to view. If the Status is
Pending, return to this page later to view the report. If the Status is Not Marked, please notify
somebody.

• Clicking on Mark Report (using Internet Explorer) will display the yellow bar at the bottom of the
screen. You can select to either open the report, or save the report to your submission list. You
will be able to view the pdf file, to see where you might have lost marks.

• For projects given as practical tasks, you should have 3 submissions available. Once you have
viewed your report, you could return to the actual file (no need to download the data file again),
and make changes to your document. If you have not yet used all three submissions, you will
be able to submit your changed file again (return to SMARK, choose the relevant project, browse
to your file, and click on submit). The best mark from the submissions will be used.
8. Log off from the system
• Before you close the browser window, click on the Log off option (top right).
