COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITY
Metals react strongly with acids. They dissolve in a solution together with the production of hydrogen
gas. Ask assistance from a family member and do the activity by carefully following the steps below.
Materials:
● iron nail, ungalvanized, 1 inch long ● copper wire, 4 cm long
● muriatic acid, commercially sold, 20 mL ● sandwich spread glass bottles
● dropper ● sandpaper or steel wool
● white paper
Procedure:
1. Clean the iron nail and copper wire by rubbing them in sandpaper or steel wool.
2. Position the glass bottles on top of a white paper.
3. Transfer 10 mL of muriatic acid in the glass bottles using a dropper.
4. Drop the iron nail and copper wire in the glass bottles and observe what happens.
1. When you drop the iron nail and copper wire, is there a reaction?
