India Furniture Market Dynamics

India Furniture Market: Growth Drivers

The rising trend of online and mobile shopping in India is expected to

propel the demand for furniture through online channels.

The ease of doing business and the policies in India gives rise to new
businesses across the country. In addition, the increasing number of small
and medium businesses further boosts the demand for low cost plastic
furniture products. This factor is expected to foster the growth of India
furniture market over the forecast period.

Growing consumer interest towards home decor has increased significantly

in the recent years. The impact of this factor would increase during the
forecast period, thereby consequentially fostering the demand of home decor
products, during the forecast period.

Rapid urbanization in India and growing demand for modular and compact
furniture is expected to positively impact the growth of furniture market in near
future.
The rapid growth of real estate sector in India is anticipated to boost the
demand for modular furniture in urban areas in India.

Increasing cost of raw material such as metal, wood, plastic, glass, leathers,
rattan, fabrics and stone that are used for manufacturing furniture. However,
by 2020, it is expected that the cost of raw materials such as plastic and glass,
would decrease owing to advancements in production technology of these
raw materials Thereby, these factors would create a favorable environment
for home decor market in future.

India Furniture Market: Market Challenges

Increase in raw material prices. Major raw materials costs were turned
higher thereby increasing the manufacturing costs. The high cost of wood and
leather increases the manufacturing cost of furniture.

Fragmented Market. Indian furniture industry is considered as a

nonorganized sector with handicraft production accounting for 85.00% of
furniture production in India.

Low cost furniture offered by unorganized players .The furniture offered at

dirt cheap prices by the unorganized players puts dent on the revenues of
major market players in India.

High cost for Quality .The high cost of quality and durable furniture is a
major headwind for furniture industry.

India Furniture Market: Market Opportunities

Untapped Market. Huge market still untapped with a middle class population
of 500 million and as India is poised to become fifth largest consumption
economy by the year 2020 the furniture market is expected to propel in growth.

Unorganized Market .The business model is outdated and unorganized

thereby paving way for organized furniture manufacturers.

Forward Integration .Leading Laminate and plywood manufacturing

companies are venturing into branded furniture business as a consequence of
forward integration
Rising popularity of Kids Furniture. The rise of single-child-double-
income families has led many urban parents to invest in high quality
furniture and furnishings for their kids rooms

Traditional Furniture .Gaining popularity The traditional Indian Furniture

is gaining popularity as they are considered as luxury lifestyle statement

Rising popularity of Modular kitchen

The concept of modular kitchens is rapidly gaining popularity in urban

areas

An awareness level of modular kitchen is expected to grow 10 times in the

next 3 to 5 years.

Recycled wood is emerging as a new source of Raw Material The shortage

of wood has caused many manufacturers to make furniture from recycled
wood.

India Furniture Market: Market Trends

Raw Materials and Tools up-gradation cost of raw material such as wood,
steel, polish, paint etc. is an important factor affecting cost of furniture as
these are variable cost. The high demand will nullify the effect in longer run.

The spiraling increase in the cost of raw materials has been witnessed with
the cardboard prices increasing by 40.00% and the prices of other materials
such as wood, packing materials and metal increasing in the range of
10.00%.

Labor cost. The craftsmen and Interior designing cost vary according to the
market demand which is usually on the upper side, adding to the cost of the
furniture manufactured.

Virtual Prototyping. The advent of advanced 3D imaging tools and, more

recently, virtual reality has unlocked a new world of possibilities for furniture
prototyping. Rather than expending the time and resources to create physical
models of their products, furniture designers can now create digital
representations of them. This promises to add a great deal of speed and
flexibility to the overall product development process.
Jointers, Planers, and Edger’s Jointers take the warp and bend out of the
bottom of a board so that it will lie flat when it goes through the planer.
Planers flatten the top of a board, and cut it down to the desired thickness.
High production facilities often combine these functions in single multipurpose
machines that are able to joint, plane, and edge in a single pass.

CNC Routers. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. CNC routers
are used extensively in the modern furniture industry to cut coves, mortises,
and slots, and to do a wide variety of shaping tasks.

Finishing Booths .Finishing booth are areas in furniture factory where

protective finishes such as polyurethane are sprayed onto the furniture as a final
step in its manufacture.

The Emergence of online Retailing in the furniture Industry

The technological advancements such as availability of high speed internet

networks such as 4G and increasing adoption of smart gadgets is boosting the
e-retail sector in India. These advancements further provide ease to the
customers to buy furniture through online channels.

In order to cater to the rising requirements of online shopping in the country,

a number of companies have stepped afoot in the online channel of furniture
market in the last few years. For instance, leading offline retailer of
readymade furniture products named @Home, which is a flagship brand of
Nil Kamal Pvt. Ltd. has launched its online shopping portal for the exclusive
range of @Home furniture, furnishings, and home decor items.

The online market accounts for revenue of USD 200 million. But it is
growing rapidly and expected to be worth USD 2,000 million in the next three
years.

User penetration is 5.20% in 2018 and is expected to hit 7.80% by 2022.

Revenue is expected to show an annual growth rate (CAGR 2018-2023) of
16.40%, resulting in a market volume of USD 2,988 million by 2023.

Regulatory Trends
The government of India has implemented 100 percent FDI policy for
townships and settlements development project; this is attracting more
foreign investors in the real estate sector which increase the quality of
residential apartments. Further, rising demand for high-end and western style
furniture is envisioned to bolster the growth of India furniture market by the
end of 2024.

The implementation of 51.00% FDI in multi-brand retail has opened up

opportunities for International players to bet big on the growing furniture
industry in India.

India Furniture Market: Market Restraints

Decline in Timber Harvest-Forest plantation is an important source of raw

material for branded furniture industry. Majority of India’s forests are state
owned with only 10.00% being classified as private forests. The National
forest policy (NFP) of 1988 has put a ban on the felling of trees in all forests
situated above an altitude of 1000 meters. The NFP has laid priority on
planting fuel wood and fodder producing trees in government forests. This
has restricted industrial wood production to farms and wastelands. As a
consequence, there has been dramatic reduction in timber harvest volume.

FDI Regulations- Branded furniture falls into the multi-brand category for
which there is a limitation of FDI; hence foreign players find it difficult to
enter India.

Market concentration limited only to cities-Branded furniture market is

primarily restricted to urban areas. Top 784 centers contribute 41.00% of the
total consumer furniture market. A and B type cities contribute 33.00% of
the total market.

Mergers and Acquisitions: Furniture Market

Indian Mattress maker Kurl –on is looking forward to a possible

acquisitions to transform itself into a home furnishings company.Kurl On
acquired a US based brand Spring Air which specializes in orthopedic beds .
The deal was of undisclosed amount. The company is setting up its
manufacturing plants in the North East of India. They are trying to expand
their product portfolio by getting into mergers and acquisitions. Kurl on

product portfolio by expanding more 100 stores in India.

company’s product expand to a complete home furnishings store. This can

elsewhere. Out of 160 outlets, there are 55 outlets present in India. Its
products are sofas, tables, bedroom, and kitchen and office furniture.
However, Sofas are the best because they are very affordable.

Millennium Lifestyle is a family owned enterprise started in 1999. The

family had nearly 75 years of experience in retailing Indian art and antiques.

Feather lite is one of India’s largest furniture manufacturing companies and

was started in 1965. The company has been in retailing furniture for the past
20 years and the first outlet is opened in Bangalore in 1987.
At present, India is the world's 14th-largest furniture market, with the
sector said to be worth some USD17.90 billion in 2015.In the same year, a
total of 10,476 importers were engaged in shipping furniture to India, with
Italy,
Germany, Spain, China, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and
Japan the primary sources for such items. In 2016, with 75,930 tons, China
was the largest single source of India's imports of furniture and home
furnishings. In second place was Malaysia with 13,004 tons, while Italy took
third with 9,441 tons. Overall, furniture imports from China, in particular,
are seen as only likely to rise. This is largely because such items are
highlyregarded by importers for their competitive pricing, which frequently
even undercuts that of locally produced alternatives. In terms of the domestic
furniture manufacturing sector, there has been a degree of consolidation in
recent years, with some 50 or so sizable players emerging, most notably
Godrej Interio, Durian and Furniture Concepts. Despite this, the combined
output of these larger businesses only accounts for about 12-15% of all
domestic production in the sector, with smaller concerns and individual
craftsmen contributing the remaining 85%.While there remains some
demand for such locally produced furniture, this is far outstripped by the
number of consumers keen to purchase the more contemporary designs that
characterize the imports in the sector. This is particularly the case among the
emerging upper- and middle-class urban population, which has demonstrated
a distinct penchant for branded furniture.

As a result of such demand, some USD 1.49 billion worth of furniture and
home-furnishing items were imported in the financial year 2015-16. As a
clear indicator of the rising level of imports in this sector, for the first eight
months of the financial year 2016-2017, total furniture imports stood at USD
1.20 billion. Should this level be sustained for the whole 12 months, this
would deliver a final figure of USD 1.80 billon, a 20.00% year-on-year rise.
According to current forecasts, India's residential furniture market is
expected to be worth more than USD 27.00 billion by 2022, a 50.00%
increase on its 2015 value of USD18.00 billion. With demand set to outstrip
supply, this is seen as representing a huge opportunity for furniture exporters
across Southeast Asia. Currently, demand for home furniture accounts for
the bulk of furniture orders, representing 65.00% of all sales in the sector.
Typically, customers are said to prefer high-end, low maintenance, quickly
installable items. India is also one of the largest importers of office furniture,
with the country accounting for just under one-fifth of global imports in the
sector. In total, office furniture accounts for 20.00% of the country's
furniture sales, with the expansion of the sector having been driven by the
country's increasing number of domestic clerical businesses,
overseasinvested companies and technology parks. The growing popularity
of B2B ecommerce platforms has also contributed to the rise in import levels
in this sector.

NEED FOR INNOVATION

Shrinking space and the ever-increasing volume of all the ‘stuff’ we are
hoarding together comprises an eternal challenge. Unlike our fictional
friends from the wizarding world, we cannot summon a room of requirement
at whim. Thankfully, we can counter this challenge by knowing how to
create smart multi-functional living spaces. While magic cannot come to
your aid, creativity and innovative design certainly can.

Take a look at how we have offered customisation options to our clients to

create non-magical (read muggle) equivalents of the wondrous room of
requirement.

27 Billion by the end of the year 2023.

India is expected to become a USD 5 Trillion economy by 2025, with an

annual growth rate of more than 7%, thus making the furniture market in

India a billion-dollar opportunity.

Factors attributing to the growth of India's Furniture Market are growing

middle-class population, rising disposable income and the increasing number

of urban households. Small unorganized local players mostly dominate the

furniture market in India. But from the last decade, the Indian furniture

market is witnessing an increase in the contribution from organized players.

In recent years with the entry of global furnishing players like IKEA in India,

this growing market share of organized player will further intensify.

The Indian furniture industry covers the entire range of activities, from

sourcing, manufacturing, and distribution, to sales and after sales. In the

Indian perspective, furniture players are actively engaged in each of these

activities. These players use various types of raw materials for making

furniture; some of the raw materials include wood, bamboo, cane, plywood,

metal, adhesive and plastic.

Among all these; wooden furniture contributes a large segment to the

furniture made in India. In the crafting of wooden furniture, mostly

indigenous wood is preferred. States like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat,

Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh are among

the leading suppliers of wood to India's Furniture Market. However,

imported wood is also used that India imports from South East Asian

Countries, namely Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and some from African

countries as well.

The growth of the Indian Furniture Market is also driven by the tourism

and hospitality industry and the corporate sector. The increasing number of

hotels and business offices further spur the demand for furniture in the

country. Some of the popular types of wood used in Indian Furniture

Industry are Teak, Sandalwood, Sheesham, Ebony, Walnut, Sal, Red Cedar,

and Rosewood. Furniture manufacturers consider several aspects related to

customer demand such as the furniture's functionality, look, feel and value

while designing furniture.

PRICING

A quality‐certified helmet of a reputed Indian

manufacturer costs not less than Rs 9000. Imported

brands, especially those customized for children, cost

much more. Higher‐grade varieties, which are lighter

in weight with better designs, coloured graphics

and superior parts can command anything from a

few thousand rupees to as much as Rs 20,000

apiece for a full‐size helmet, thus being out of

reach for many families who may own just a two‐

wheeler.

Bringing down this cost, by way of promotional

subsidy could help open up the helmet market,

and thus making it more popular, believes Amit

Bhatt, strategy head (urban transport) at EMBARQ

India, a non‐ governmental organization working for

promoting sustainable transport. "The high cost of the

helmet is definitely a reason for some families

shying away from investing in it. A government

subsidy for certified helmet manufacturers could

definitely attract more companies to this industry,

which in turn would make pricing more

competitive. Even opening up the Indian market

by allowing more foreign helmet manufacturers to

sell their products here could help bring down their cost," he

said.

According to Bhatt, sale of helmets should be

connected to that of twowheelers. "If two‐wheeler

companies connect their sales with a compulsorypurchase

of a helmet, it could go a long way to

make it more acceptable among the masses," he

said.

Low‐cost helmets are also available, but with no

guarantee of their quality, it's actually a wasteful

expenditure, says city‐based trafficengineer Pratapsingh

Bhonsle. "A lot of people have helmets, but they

are only slung on their arms while driving, to be worn

in front of a trafficwarden. Helmets which don't

have the ISI mark on them will do the wearer no

good in case of an accident," he said.

According to Bhonsle, reducing helmet costs could be

strategic for better enforcement of the helmet

rule. "It may be affordable for a family now, but

if the trafficpolicestarts enforcing the helmet rule for

pillion riders too, then it could start pinching some

families. Having an option to purchase a good‐

quality helmet for an affordable price will then make

the rule more acceptable," he said.

These observations are not unfounded. A research

published in World health Organisation's 'Helmet

Manual' also advocates making available helmets at

subsidized rates to improve their use. According to its

findings, factory workers in low‐income countries have

to work 11 times as long to earn enough money

to buy a motorcycle helmet as their counterparts

in high‐income countries. One way to overcome this

is to reduce the cost of helmets to the

consumer, the research says. This approach has been

successfullyintroduced in Vietnam by a nongovernmental

organisation there,which distributed tropical motorcycle

helmets free to school‐age children, so that they could

ride safelyas passengers on their parents' motorbikes.
